The ladder was just barely out of reach and Scorpio let out a frustrated sound, panic gripping her as adrenaline began to rush through her system. She was going to fall, and it was going to hurt; she was going to get into so much trouble if she turned up with a broken bone or a contusion (because no, she wasn't willing to even entertain the thought of a much more grim outcome to the fall).

It was right about then that she felt, more than saw Nate grasp her wrist, effectively stopping her fall when he yanked her forward. Mostly out of instinct, she gripped the nearest thing, which for the time being, just so happened to be him, "Oh... oh gosh," a pause as she breathed harshly, showing she had gotten quite the scare out of the situation; her nerves were in fact, not made of steal, and the adrenaline was still pumping through her vein, "I-I have no idea how I'd have explained a couple of broken bones when I got back," and she was still doing a very, very good job of ignoring the fact the fall might've just resulted in a lot worse than just a few broken bones.

"I'm fine," her gaze traveled down to her feet and she lifted one of them to glare pathetically at the heel before turning sharply to face him, "That is not fair! I didn't design the outfit, and I'm mostly sure no female would have. These things are not exactly the best garments for fighting. I keep wondering whose bright idea this was, and if they're having a particularly good time watching from some hidden location," she was pouting, but she believed she had a good reason to.

Finally noticing she was still gripping onto him like a life line, the girl let go (again, in her defense, her instincts were still pretty much screaming for her to hang onto anything solid and he just so happened to be there), "Sorry... I don't usually jump on these things, for obvious reasons. I found out the hard way on one of my first nights."

Nate looked at her, blinking. He let her hold on to him, not wanting her to go panicking and falling off anyway. Besides, those stupid shoes would just cause her more trouble if she tried to walk on them.

He looked her over, tilting his head to the side. Maybe she was right. The outfit certainly was appealing for a guy to look at, but maybe not the most conventional thing for a female to actually have to wear. His green eyes focused on her, and he nodded, grinning.

"I guess you're right. I bet some dude would get a kick out of watching girls fight in things like that. If you don't like it so much why do you wear it? Is it like, you're super hero outfit?" He laughed, though he imagined that could probably be pretty close to the truth.

"That's okay," he said, when she loosened her grip on him. He indicated with his head for her to follow him up the last ladders and onto the higher roof, offering her his hand to guide her up. He could be unconsciously nice when he wanted to be. Or mostly when he wasn't thinking about it. He went slow, not wanting her to get her dumb shoes caught on the ladder or anything.

How would they be able to jump from the roof if she fell off now?

"I don't get to chose how it looks like," it was... it was complicated. Besides, she was actually sure that at the end of the day, hers wasn't all that bad. There were others that were much more questionable, "You should see Libra's," she murmured under her breath, taking a moment to brush off her skirt, as if it might've come into contact with dirt or dust and she couldn't bear the thought of it, "Or Cancer's..." yeah, on second thought, she figured that she could've done a lot worse than this.

Her gaze lifted to meet his and her silence pretty much told him that yes, this was more or less the equivalent of a super-suit for her. Which sounded really, really messed up, not that she thought about it, "It's surprisingly warm though, which is good. It has it's perks," ah yes, she'd noticed that even on colder nights she didn't freeze to death, "The heels I could do without though," She'd always wondered how it worked, and her past memories didn't quite extend to this sort of information, which was a pity.

It was a mystery. Durrrrr, the irony, it burned.

Now that she was calmer, she focused her attention back on the ladder, pressing a hand to her chest as she took a last few couple of deep breathes. His offered hand did catch her attention though and she took it, "Thank you," a pause as she began to climb up the ladder, "Why, exactly, do you want to jump from building to building. What purpose does that serve?" because surely he must have a purpose other than 'for the hell of it'. Right? Riiiiiight....
PostPosted: Sat Jun 12, 2010 11:43 am

'It does have some 'perks', indeed," Nate said, always the charmer. Of course, he was staring at her chest as he spoke, just in case she missed his meaning. He laughed and climbed the rest of the way up, even helping her over the rail and onto the flat surface of the roof.

Feeling pretty triumphant, he looked down over the edge, taking in the view. This felt cool. Thrilling. Just his kind of thing.

"Why wouldn't you want to jump from building to building?" he asked, shaking his head as he went to the other side to examine the jump. He liked the look of it, though the alley seemed to be long and he probably needed an epic running start to get close to the roof on the other side. It was lower, at least, which was ideal for jumping.

"If you can do it, then why not? And anyway, it's fun. You might be a super hero, or something, but you still have to have fun, right? All work and no play makes for some angry folks, I've seen. So why not just relax and do... whatever you want? All that stress of doing what you have to do: I'd rather just do what I want to do, what makes me feel good and alive in the moment. No harm there, right?"

He grinned at her, pointing to the jump he had just investigated.

"Think you can make that?"

....Oooooh, he was just so very lucky that they were on a ladder and that she had very little handy (aside her magnifying glass - using that would have really hurt him, and she didn't want that) which could be used to hit him with. So she had to settle with sending him a mortified look, which soon shifted into a mild glare.

She jumped over the top of the railing with ease, allowing him to help her. It was slightly contradictory, the way he spoke and the way he acted; she wondered if he'd noticed that, or if he was doing it unconsciously. Something told her it might've easily been the later, for some reason, and that if she brought it up, he was going to become self conscious.

Boys.

"For one, because it's dangerous?" her initial anger was long past and her tone hinted that she was amused. Apparently the girl was rather laid back for the most part. Huh... she hadn't looked at it like that. In a way, his words made sense, and yet at the same time they didn't; the pain that gripped her heart was still there, and it seemed to intensify, as if to tell her that yes, it was still there, and it wasn't going to let her forget, "I don't know... I have trouble having fun when the people I care for... can't come back," she couldn't say 'die'. It was still fresh, and just thinking about the word hurt, "I wish it was that easy."

But then he was grinning at her and pointing at the jump, and the girl turned her head to examine it; the distance wasn't too harsh. She'd done worse before, "I can do that," a pause as she turned her head to him, the silent question rung unasked.

Could he?
PostPosted: Sat Jun 12, 2010 1:09 pm

Nate looked at her for a long, silent moment, then shook his head.

"Of course it's dangerous, that's part of the fun. But you won't get hurt, right? And I'm damn sure I won't, so we shouldn't worry about it." He shook his head, shrugging off her concern as silly. But then she spoke again and he looked at her. Sobered, he looked down.

"Yeah, I get that. I'm, uh, well," he couldn't say sorry. He still didn't know how to apologize without really meaning it. And he hadn't done anything wrong except say the wrong thing, which he had no fault in, really. How did he know she had people close to her who died? His father was in a coma, which was as good as dead. But that didn't stack up: his father had no idea who he was.

"Good!" He grinned when she said she could do it, glad to perk back up to the excitement of the moment. It was easier to dwell there, in adrenaline, than worry about the weight of the world. He ran back, getting ready to take a leap at it. "I'll go first, okay?"

He never missed a chance to show off.

And before she could really say anything he was off running. He hit the ledge and leaped, throwing himself as far as he could, but he just hadn't been going fast enough. He dropped short, slamming into the wall and grabbing onto the ledge of the roof, with no real footing to help him up.

s**t.

Scorpio was trying really hard to understand what he meant, but after seconds ticked by and she blinked at him, it was clear that no, she did not get it. Not really. But maybe that was just her past memories getting in the way there; most were subconscious, but the idea of risking yourself willingly, for fun, seemed preposterous.

Then again, according to him, they weren't really risking anything, because he knew he could do it, and she knew she could do it. So... where exactly was the point in this? "No, I don't think I will get hurt," Still, she was apparently open minded enough to give it a try, because she arched a brow at him and did the equivalent of flourish with her hands, indicating that he could go first if he wished. For the time being, she was choosing to ignore his blunder and the sadness that had crept up on her without warning. He hadn't meant for it, and she didn't blame him.

She watched as he stepped back, and rushed for the ledge, however... something was off. Something about the dash, or maybe the jump had been off, and before she could dwell on it, she took a few steps back and rushed for the ledge. She was luckier than him, skidding to a stop on the other building's roof top (but then again, she boasted increased stats, and she didn't think that was particularly fair - she wasn't sure she'd have made that jump in her normal form), "Wait, no!" she scrambled to her feet and peered over the edge, her hand extending so he could take it.

"Let me help you!" for some odd reason, it felt important. Please, just let her do this one thing. Let her feel useful for once. She'd been feeling so utterly useless...

Nate hung on for all he was worth. He certainly did not want to fall off a roof tonight. And he was so sure he could make it! Kicking himself internally, he struggled to haul himself over the edge of the railing, scrambling a bit, but he couldn't find a foot hold and had no hope of getting himself over. He was rather stuck.

He saw Scorpio sailing over him and landing on the roof. Awesome. A great jump, true enough, but how embarrassing it was to have been out done by a girl in heels. He tried not to think about it, trying to use his arms to pull himself up without the use of his feet, though they did their best to kick at the wall and find some kind of grip.

When she offered him her hand he considered it for a moment.

Let her help him, gloat over him, be better than him? No way, he thought. There was no way he was going to let her humiliate him, as if just missing the jump wasn't bad enough. He had to do this for himself, and there was nothing in this world that would convince him otherwise.

Except his feet slipped again and he lost one hold with his hand for a moment, dropping a good few inches before his hand lashed out and grabbed the side of the rail again. All the work he had been doing to get up was lost. Heart in his throat, he looked up at her again and saw her staring at him with eyes he couldn't quite read. He had never seen anything like it before. Giving in, despite himself, he reached up and grabbed her hand, trying not to slip in the process.

"Don't fall off with me!" he yelped, hoping she had firm footing up there and he didn't pulled her down.

He wasn't going to take her hand; she could see it in his eyes when he looked up at her. He was going to fall, and there was nothing she could do.

Panic gripped her. Sheer, pure panic, and she had no idea what to do other than look at him helplessly. It was right around then that his feet slipped again, and he lost his grip on the railing with one hand, "No!" her eyes had widened and she prepared herself to lean further over the edge in an attempt grip him, even without his permission... even if it meant putting herself in danger to do so. Thankfully though, because she could act, he grasped her hand off his own free will, and the Zodiac pressed her boot again the railing for leverage as she pulled up with all her might. It wasn't exactly easy business, but it was probably clear to him now that she was, in fact, unnaturally strong.

Fearing she might pop his shoulder out of it's socket, he used let go of his arm with one hand and gripped the front of his shirt, tugging at it too once he was mostly over the side. It was hard work, but after a small while, Scorpio gave a final tug that sent them both successfully onto the safety of the roof.

There was no gloating from her and no humiliation awaiting him whatsoever. If anything, it looked like she was actually physically refraining herself from actually fussing over him, like he mattered. Maybe he did. Didn't everyone matter? "No more jumping," she told him, sounding breathless, "Please," at least though, the feeling of uselessness had dissipated, and even if she couldn't quite tell yet, a small, tiny little crack in her heart healed over, because she couldn't change the past... but the future was still open to be changed.

What she did, did matter.
PostPosted: Sat Jun 12, 2010 4:29 pm

Nathan gripped her hand tightly as she pulled him, trying his best to help. He really didn't want to pull her over to her death, and his, considering he had only just kept her from falling. What good would it have done to help her then only to drag her down now? And even if they didn't die, it would still hurt. A lot.

He felt her moving him, though, and soon enough her hand was on his shirt and with one good tug they were both safe on the hard roof of the building. He sprawled out as he fell, landing hard on top of her and something hitting him in the stomach to knock the wind out of him.

Worth it, he thought, since he hadn't fell the other way.

Gasping, his breath gone from both the hit, which might have been her elbow or some other appendage, and the panic he had felt in that jump, he looked at her as she told him not to jump any more. He almost challenged her to a rematch, but her 'please' made him pause. He nodded slowly, then shook his head, both agreeing not to jump again and silently saying it had been a dumb idea.

As close to a real confession as she was going to get. But still, he knew it had been a bit too dangerous.

"Thank you for saving me," he panted out, looking at her, "I think I could have made it, I wasn't going fast enough. But... but thank you, anyway, for jumping over like a boss and helping me and all that."

So he wasn't the best at thanking people, but he owed her that much, at least. More. She had kept him from hurting himself or worse, and that meant he would have to pay her back some time.

"Awesome jump by the way."

Scorpio was still pretty much stuck on the 'He's fine, I'm fine, we're both fine, oh god, oh god, he's fine' brain process, which meant her mental capacities were lowered rather sharply as she caught her breath. It took her several moments to realize the awkward position they had landed it, and yet still, couldn't even seem to muster the energy to care because he was fine, and she was fine, and god, she was so glad no had seen them do that.

Slowly, she pulled herself away from him and into a sitting position, pressing her hand to her chest in an attempt to calm herself down. It took her several breaths, but when she finally did, he was talking and she turned her head to look at him, "I'm glad I was able to help," and she really, really did mean that; they weren't just empty words, "I think... I cheated. Just a little bit," she lowered the hand she'd been pressing to her chest between pants, "I wouldn't have made it, if I had been... like this," and she gestured to herself, though it was possible he didn't quite get where she was coming from, "I get a bit," a lot, actually, "Of a boost in... uhm, stats?" that sounded stupid, but it was as near to an explanation as she could get, "Yours was better," he would've made it, had he taken the leap right. If there had been an exam on building jumping... he'd have gotten a decent grade, even despite the questionable landing.

Either she was reading him, or she'd pegged him off as the type, because after letting out a sigh, leaning her back against the railing, she shook her head, "You owe me nothing. You already did something for me," she offered him a smile then, "I was feeling kind of down," technically, she still was - too much had gone on that she couldn't ignore, but at least she no longer felt like everything had been lost - because everything hadn't been lost. There were still a lot of them left, and focusing on what they'd lost, rather than on how to maintain what they still had, was not going to help. The situation wasn't ideal, but it was... workable, "I'm feeling a lot better," she then looked down at her gloved hands, frowned at them and slipped one of her gloves off before offering him her hand to shake, "Friends?" it was cheesy, but hey, it worked.

Nathan was sitting next to her, still reeling from the shock of nearly falling from the damn roof. He laughed, adrenaline still coursing through him. The terror had faded, and now he was feeling rather good. Exhilarated, really. That was awesome! And if they planned it better they could make that jump without falling.

Not that he was going to suggest it.

He listened to her as she spoke about her 'stats', wondering if this was some kind of extreme LARPing or something. But, no, because she really had been able to get across that gap with almost no trouble at all, so her 'stats' had to be a lot higher than his. She could probably beat him the hell up, too, but he wasn't going to challenge her to find out. At least not now.

Maybe if they met up again, they could test their metal against one another again. In a way, Nate didn't mind 'losing' to this girl. She was, in his opinion, pretty cool, and if anyone was going to beat him he imagined it couldn't get better than her.

He looked at her hand, surprised she had got his thoughts right on. But he wasn't convinced, and he would still try to repay her somehow. He grinned though, taking her hand firmly.

"Friends. I was feeling down, too. So I still owe you one."

Laughter was contagious, because Scorpio was, in fact, having a hard time not joining him. She was pretty sure it was the adrenaline; she'd had it coursing through her veins not once, but twice in a very short length of time. That had to do something to one's inhibitions, or something, she was sure of it. As it was though, she just grinned back at him, because she was honestly just glad they were both fine. Never mind that the risks had been taken willingly, and never mind that they had been her fault - she should keep her mouth closed next time. Don't tell strange guys with paintball guns that you jump off of buildings; it has consequences.

"Don't look at me like that. I swear I'm not insane, I'm not making it up. I could probably pick you up if I tried," and now that she thought about it, it was sort of embarrassing. However, as far as patrol nights went, this one hadn't been half bad. She'd not encountered Youma or Negaversers, had gained a friend and had actually managed to cheer up more than she realized.

Not half bad at all.

"We helped eachother. Cheesy, but it works," she shrugged slightly and shook his hand with a smile, then, after a few moments, took a deep breath and raised to her feet, brushing off her skirt; this time it had gained dust from when she'd skidded, but it didn't seem to have been harmed. Her head looked up to the sky, and then to her wrist, where she.... obvious lacked a watch, "What time is it?" she should technically be heading back - she hoped to God her parents had tried to go into her room while she'd been out, "I didn't find Youma, but I found you. I guess I should call it a night."
PostPosted: Sat Jun 12, 2010 6:39 pm

Nathan stood up slowly, looking at her with a frown when she said she had to be heading back. He didn't look at his watch, if he had one, and he shrugged his shoulders without any indication that he had one when she asked. He, of course, had his cell phone that had the time on it, but maybe if she didn't know she would just stay longer.

Maybe?

Nathan never wondered about the time, anyway. If the sun was coming up, he knew to head back to the apartment. Then he'd sleep, then go sit with Tony in the hospital. Same ol', same ol', it felt.

"So if you jump off into the night like the super hero you are, how am I going to see you again?" He asked abruptly, after a long silence. He wanted to see her again, after all, he just didn't know how to go about running into senshi. And he wasn't 'bad' enough for her dog to sniff out.

He didn't seem to catch the comment about 'youma', not knowing what they were but not asking.

"I mean, unless you don't want to hang out again, I guess. That's cool too."

He either had no watch, or wasn't sharing; either way, she was pretty sure she was pushing it and it would be very, very bad if her parents decided to try and open her locked door. Thus, with a sigh, she stretched her arms over her head, working out her strained muscles and decided that yes, she should indeed be getting back.

His words caught her attention though, and she turned look at him. For some odd reason, and despite his choice of words... he looked dejected, forlorn, even lonely. Scorpio could identify with that, to some extent, "I like you," she said, almost as abruptly as he had spoken, "I like you a lot - you're a lot nicer than you let on, and you thought Fluffy was cool," she was beginning to think she was the only that appreciated the dog. That gave him points in her book.

Even if it wasn't sentient, she still felt it was downright awesome, "Look," she grabbed his wrist and tried to guide him to the side of the building, pointing towards the near distance; the trees of the park could barely be seen from where they stood, "I usually follow the same route. That's not entirely important. What is important, is that I take the park around nine. It's usually calm," her fuku also didn't quite stand out nearly as much as others and she could go about her business more often than not.
