I've been working on a novel for two years... 1 1/2 of that was research. ^^;

It's a medieval fantasy that combines real world logic and your standard magical universe logic (with my own twist).
There are three main characters, all 15 years old. (Back then, 15-16 was like our 18-20 year olds in the eyes of the law.)
Mina Bennett - a mage apprentice and only one of the group who can use magic.
Karon Foreman - a thief and the "muscleman" of the group.
Adler Fletcher - an archer and the tactician of the group.

I have the basic plot thought out as well as three side-plots, although I still haven't found a good name that fits the villain. DX

Until I finish the extra research I'm doing, it is on hold. To sharpen my skills, I am working on a crossover fic.

I'm hoping to have revisions for chapters 1 and 2 of my fan fic as well as the release of chapter 3 out before July gets here.

As for my novel... Only God knows how long that could take. DX
I should have the preface done before school starts for my siblings, though.
Oh, wow so much research! What all were you researching?

Most of it was on the Middle Ages itself. It took so much time because I had to do all kinds of research.
Some of the things I researched from that time period included the food they ate, the age you were considered to be an adult, how old someone could be to join the army, the different types of soldiers, the languages they spoke during that time, and even how they dressed and acted. Alternate research was more or less me looking up Latin and Germanic languages that were spoken. As it turns out, the language spoken depended on status in society and which part of Europe the person lived in. (Ex. Only those with the highest education, such as those in the church, knew how to speak Latin.)
I also researched what kind of scenery I should portray to the reader just by taking walks around forest areas.
I am impressed. That's a lot of stuff that most folks wouldn't know off hand. What kind of research methods did you use?

When I first began my research, I was working as a library assistant as a "class" during my senior year of high school. I had easy access to the library, and since it was a "class" that I was getting a high school credit for I had plenty of time to just sit down and do research. When I got home, I'd search topics pertaining to the story's themes and setting on the computer both to obtain new information and to match it up to what I found in the books. Since the laws of magic depend on the writer, I had to sit down and get very creative.
All of these I made notes for... and the notes have taken up a whole notebook and 2/3 of another. sweatdrop
That makes sense. Your notes on the novel world's magic must be fascinating.

It needs a bit more work, but I think I have some of the basic principles and "Cannot do's" the way I want them. 3nodding
Since I do not have them completely done, I don't think I'll post them up just yet. D:

I do have some of the Forbidden Magic rules done...
The reason why it's "forbidden" is because the spells themselves are potentially destructive. Although incredibly powerful, they can kill the user. (Also the destructive nature is a reason not to use them.) It's not a unique idea, but when magic is involved there should be forbidden spells. These become relevant later on in the plot.
One type of forbidden magic that I have made notes for (though incomplete) is "blood magic." Although powerful, it has "high risk." This is because the user gets rid of any limitations of the body by creating a "pact" with the magic, all by using their own blood and a chant. It gives the user great power, but at a price: now that the user's life force and magic are one, a way to kill the person is to seal their magic - and for a highly skilled mage that isn't difficult to do. The person's lifespan is also shortened. This type of magic was outlawed because of the high death toll that occurred as a result of mage apprentices and mages of different "levels" attempting to use it.
As I said, it is incomplete, but this was nearest to completion.

After I’m born I finally realize I exist to imitate humans
VOCALOID, fated to sing forever
Even if it's an existing song, a programmed toy accepts it just fine
Gnawing on a leek, looking up at the sky shedding tears
I realize it's the end, falling asleep inside the monitor
I guess this must be the "trash bin"
Right now, are my memories closing off and disappearing...
But you know, it’s only you, that I won’t forget we had fun times
I wish that the taste of chopped leek would still stay...
I’m singing to the end, just for you, songs that I want you to hear
I’d want to sing more but that’s too much to wish for
This is where we part
All my feelings disappear into thin air, reducing to 0s and 1s
The fairy tale, curtain is falling, leaving nothing behind here
That's a little sad, isn't it? Everything except the memories of a voice is fading,
Leaving only a name. But if, say. I know that it is not what He wished for
Singing it all to the end was not in vain, is what I want to think

I think that I'm going to try from scratch, so my only idea right now is a Demon-esque idea.

A young child with a terminal illness is visited by a man who tells her that he will cure her of her disease, providing that she hand over "something precious" to him. She didn't understand it then, and agreed, signing a contract in blood without knowing it. She grows up and reaches the age of 16, and she is once again visited by the man who cured her. He says that her soul belongs to him, and attempts to take her to Hell with him.

That's all I have right now. It's a work in progress...

I'm writing a fantasy book that doesn't really need a lot of research for it takes place in a world I created. It involves Light vs Darkness and Demons. Most of the people in this world are born with control over one element and I plan on making a sequel for it if it does well.

Characters.

Deltryxz: He is the protagonist a young man with crimson color long hair that has been training for ten years of his life to be a great warrior in agreement to his living in the castle of the Emperor. He has control over darkness naturally.

Lucinda: Deltryxz's sister and one of the maids in the castle of the Emperor. She is the personal maid of the Princess Sandrial as part of the agreement for them to live in the castle. Not much is known about her power except she has random bursts of see the world through other eyes.

Vercion: The Emperor and the one who rules over his Kingdom and is the driving force behind all of the stuff Deltryxz and his group do.

Sandrial: The Princess and Vercion's daughter she has a interest in Deltryxz and often watches him train most days. She is rumored to be able to control water.

Marlene: A girl around the same age as Deltryxz and is part of the squad he is put in. She tends to be action before thinking and is often scolded by the others for it. She has the ability to control nature.

Denerous: Another member of Deltryxz's group. He thinks ahead before the battle and plans the strategy they will use in the next battle. He can control the wind.

Kerdex: The last member of Deltryxz's group he is more muscular then the other members and wields duel axes to prove it. He adds some important notice to when there is something the others missed when planning a strategy. He has the power to control fire.

Just thought I would quote this since there was no comment on it.

It is plants she mainly has a fondness for roses and her rapier's hilt is shaped like a rose.

I did include a bit of history in the book by mentioning something that sounds a lot like the "Black Death."
There is a bit of religion in it, since there are churches in some towns...
The book is rather serious with its undertones, although there are some amusing/light-hearted moments. Karon is somewhat of a comic relief. He uses the bombs he makes for nearly everything... from opening "doors" by blowing a hole in the wall to "catching" their dinner... sweatdrop
One of the "issues" brought to light is someone with antisocial behavior. Adler is very aloof and distant from the rest of the group, and people who are antisocial aren't very comfortable in groups and want to avoid being in a group if possible. (I had to observe someone with antisocial behavior for this.)
Although Karon and Adler are based off of two people who are close and dear to me, they are not "copies" of them. I just used a few of their traits and came up with the rest on my own.
Mina was not based off of anyone... although I had to use a trait or two of mine to begin her creation, she is the "happy medium" between easygoing Karon and distant Adler.

Alright, what I'm working on is based in my own world and is told like someone is sitting in front of you telling the story in first person.

The people in that world gain animal attributes (ie ears, wings tails, abilities ect.) when they hit puberty.

Mel (the main charater) grew up and when she hit "puberty" she didn't change and their was a prophacy that someone like her was going to come and change the world. So Mel has to run away from home or be killed.

That's all I really have right now...

Awesome sauce, sounds like the characters should be more believable because of using traits to start them.

On Marlene's power, what do you mean by nature? Is it plants and animals, or elemental earth?

It is plants she mainly has a fondness for roses and her rapier's hilt is shaped like a rose.
Spiffy, are there other plants that she doesn't have as much of a fondness with?

Well I haven't decided yet what that would be for the rose thing is actually part of the plot or a side plot.
