Even if he wanted to, Timur dared not explain. The merest mention of spirits could arouse them to attack. All his problems had started when the two-legged creatures touched him and ever since each time a stranger touched him something bad would happen. All he could do was shake his head, "No touch! Touching brings bad things! You must be clean, or you cannot touch another!"

Njeve cocked her head to the side and lifted a brow. She did not understand exactly what he was talking about and it upset her some. She looked down at her own body and inspected herself. She felt pretty clean, and looked pretty clean as well. So why would he assume she isn't?
"But I am clean," Njeve said, "I always keep myself clean."
She sighed and pawed at the dirt. She was starting to get hungry again and could feel the rumbles within her stomach grow. She made a small whine and she rubbed it thoughtfully.

Timur lowered his head and stared at her critically. After a few seconds he leaned forward slightly, without coming close enough for her to tough, and sniffed cautiously. He shifted his weight from side to side and mumbled to himself. That she had tried to touch him without reason still seemed suspicious. Why would she do that unless she wanted to hurt him?
He stood up restlessly and circled her once, still mumbling to himself and still keeping out of her range. For a second he stopped mumbling and lifted his ears at her. That sound. He knew that sound.
Was that why she touched him? She was hungry and she thought he had food? Timur smiled to himself; yes, she was hungry, that must be it. Timur had been hungry too until Queen Nawiri invited him into her pride. She had been so kind to him, but not without reason. A terrible disaster had swept through her pride - a curse from the spirits, no doubt - and they needed new members to rebuild their numbers. That gave Timur an idea. He sat down in front of Njeve and gave her a big, friendly grin. "How would you like to see my pride?"

Njeve blinked at him and nodded her head to his question. He was smiling at her and it made her feel funny. She hadn't seen a smile that big since she last saw her father and she barely remembered how he looked anymore. Looking away from him for a moment she nodded again, and looked back quickly.
"I would," She said quietly, "I would like that."
