He chuckled slightly, in good nature of course, watching as the boy got it the first time. He even praised the boy as his daughter walked over, taking the clip and attaching it to the collar before letting the dog go.
"Very good Azzo."

Azzo looked at Alex confused, before edging closer to Melody and whispered where hopefully her father couldn't hear, "Why'd he say good job?"
He shifted slightly, fathers, he still had this uneasiness about them as he sized up Melody's father. It wasn't like he often got told he'd done a good job, it was always do it again. Or is that the best you can do? He almost felt like he'd done something wrong... without that ohmaigawd hide feeling he got from his father.
Though admittedly Azzo's own father was probably pretty sore at him for not joining the military as soon as he'd turn eighteen, which wouldn't help matters. He gave Alex an unsure smile after a moment he was still waiting for Melody to explain.

Melody giggled, watching as her father turned back to setting out their lunch. "Papa likes to give out praise for good jobs, it's just how he is."
"A good job deserves rewarding, even if it's something as simple as telling some one they did a good job," Alex interrupted as he turned to face the kids again. And he hadn't really heard their conversation, he was that good. Well, not really, but he did have the feeling his praise to Azzo had unnerved the poor kid, so he felt he should give an explanation.
"If you tell a child they are doing a good job then it makes them feel good about themselves."

Azzo tilted his head at Melody before looking back at Alex his mouth hung agape trying to figure out what to say in response.
It took him a bit to get his baring and he shook his head. "Huh... I see." He said softly, looking down at Merlin who was looking up at him while whimpering for some food.
Azzo blinked before scooting back over to the backpack, he grabbed out a sandwich in a bag, he was trying to change the subject just as fast as it'd gotten there. It wasn't quite the easiest for him to swallow.
"I swear, grams has this pup eating normal human food." He held up a cheese toast. "Though I guess there could be worse things than toasted cheese for a dog..."
It was better than dragging along dog food at least, that is if you asked Azzo.

"Human food isn't good for a dog. A scrap here or there won't hurt him, but not all the time. It's best, if you'll be out for long periods of time with him, to carry a few treats, or a zip-lock bag of dog food with you so he has something for him."
Useful information to keep a hold of, if nothing else. "Though I'd suggest more dog food then treats, because those should be used more for rewarding your dog for good behaviour. Raising a dog, I found, is not unlike raising a kid. They still need praise and discipline, but you don't have to put it through school."
Melody glared at her father just slightly, who was laughing at his own joke. "Thanks dad."

Azzo looked in his bag thinking. "Yeah.... I keep telling her not to feed him so much human stuff."
He shrugged as he was still poking around, "I don't think I have any dog food with me..." He said with a wrinkle of the nose.
He paused looking between Melody and her dad. It was weird to see, at least for Azzo. He sighed as he continued to check the few pockets as well. Producing a small back of dog treats, it wasn't dog food but it was something. "He actually ate before we came. He shouldn't be that hungry."
Merlin's ears perked up at the bags in Azzo's hands.

"Well if she's not keen on stopping, just make sure you take him on frequent walks, to burn off what he does eat. And make sure he doesn't get any chocolate, that's very bad for them in large quantities."
Melody smiled as she leaned over, resting her arms on her dad's head. "Papa used to have a bunch of dogs growing up. He's learned a lot over the years. He's sure to be able to help you!"

Azzo paused, "I made a point anything chocolate goes to me." He grinned, "Then again she knows that much I think..."
He put the cheese sandwich away and sat near Merlin, with a treat, as the pup tried to get the treat from Azzo it whined. "Sit Mer." He said trying to get the puppy to sit.
Though it seemed to only cause the puppy to struggle against the leash more. "No Mer. Sit, Sit down." He tried again as Merlin figured he wasn't getting the treat by pulling against the least he stood there whimpering and looking pitiful. Azzo sighed as he looked at the puppy.

At this Alex stood and made his way over to the dog, smiling. Then, as he kneeled to the ground, he pushed gently against the dog's rear to make him sit.
"Merlin, sit."

Azzo watched as Alex got Merlin to listen, though not without a bit of help. The puppy-haired boy was looking at Melody and back to her father curiously.
"Maybe you should train him..." Azzo said after a second with a lofted brow. He knew when to give up as far as when other people were around. It was sorta second nature in some situations, and him controlling his puppy, was one of those situations.

"Ah, but then he still wouldn't listen to you." Smiling, he took the treat and gave it to the pup once he had sat. Then, promptly, he stepped away. "You give it a try. Just press down at the base of his tail, forcing him to sit, as you tell him to do so. Eventually he'll learn that sit means to sit."

Azzo blinked, dumbfounded slightly as he watched Melody's father. "Oh. I see."
He said after a second before watching Merlin who was staring at the treats again, after devouring the first one. His tail waggled whining for another.
Azzo did as he was told and paused, "Sit." He said to Merlin pressing against the pup's rear as he'd been instructed. Watching Merlin as he was well... helped to sit. Azzo gave the pup a treat and backed up, looking curiously at Alex.

He nodded, smiling. "Very good. Now, as an experiment, try getting him to sit with out help. I'm not expecting him to do so, but it doesn't hurt to try."

Azzo nodded thoughtfully. Apparently Dog Training for Idiots isn't what he needed after all. "Sit Merlin." Azzo said again watching the puppy who'd stood up and was trying to get the treat.
Though the puppy had to think about it for a minute after he was told, cocking his head with one ear perked he stood still wagging his tail again eyeing the treat bag. "Merlin... Sit." Azzo tried again, watching the white German Shepard pup continue to disobey.

Melody giggled, feeling a bit bad for her pup as he failed to get the dog to obey. Though in a way it was really kind of cute. A pup and his pup~ Another giggle left her.
Alex had to chuckle himself, not surprised the dog hadn't done as told. "All things in time, Azzo. So just keep pushing against him like I showed you and he'll get it eventually."
