The blue and brown were humming rather loudly. Their claws had fish and shellfish that had been cracked open. Suddenly, the air was full of flits. Including a dirty looking gold and a rather shiny bronze. Blues, greens, the occasional brown and Ralae swore she saw a black, were all perched around humming, a sure sign the hatching was about to occur.
Trying to be as slow moving and quiet as possible, Ralae worked her way closer to the largest of the eggs and Wykla. Her heart was in her throat and her skin slick with sweat. "What are we going to do? I don't think the queen will let us near."
She had to whisper and try to pitch her voice to be heard over the humming. "I really want a flit."

Wykla felt the humming through her bones. The eggs were going to hatch Tonight! Her eyes go wide as the rest of the flits appear. Oh shards! It is a golds nest. She watches Ralae make her way around the nest towards her.
Feeling like there are eyes on the back of her neck she turns her head to glance behind her. She nearly faints as a blue skims over head towards the nest to drop a wiggling fish inside the nest.
As soon as Ralae is beside her, Wykla leans close to catch her words. She nods and passes a meatroll to her friend. "Probably not, but we have food. Think welcoming thoughts and maybe that'll draw them to us." She gives her friend a sly look. "I really wouldn't want to try chasing them away just to get an egg."
Glancing back at the nest she sees the eggs are rocking wildly. Quickly she brakes off a couple of pieces and scoots as close as she dares. But not too close that it upsets the other flits as they croon their welcoming song. With her eyes on the eggs she thinks how much she wants one, how happy she'll make it, and all the juicy meat scraps she'll give it. Now it was just a matter of waiting for the first egg to crack.

Ralae's heart was pounding so loud, she could barely hear Wykla's words above it. She was sweating with nervousness and the heat of the night, her shirt sticking to her lean frame. The tween tried to keep her thoughts positive and welcoming. The eggs were shaking violently now and suddenly there was a loud crack!
One of the two largest eggs split in twain and out stumbled a dark looking flit. Was it a brown or a bronze? It was hard to tell in the night and with the wet membrane sticking to the little creature as it stumbled towards Wykla.
"Feed him! Feed him!" Ralae squeaked excitedly. Another egg hatched and a blue nosed forward. Immediately as if there was an unheard signal, the adults began to sweep down and drop food for the first two hatchlings.

Wykla nearly jumps out of her skin at the loud crack. Maybe it was the night air, but it seemed louder than the dragon eggs. There was the first fire lizard! The baby was stumbling right towards her! Was it on purpose or just accidental? It doesn't matter! Think happy thoughts!
"I know! I know!" Her hands shake with nervousness as she tosses the first piece towards him. It flies high over the little flit and Wykla squeaks. Trying with a new piece and more careful aim to land it almost right in front of him. She utterly ignores the flits over head to concentrate fully on the little one in front of her.
The flit shrieks with ravenous hunger as the piece lands under his nose. Hampered by the membrane he snaps up the piece and demands more.
A huge grin splits her face as she tosses another piece a little closer and coos at him. "Come here sweet boy. That's right." The moment he's within arm's reach Wykla reaches out. One hand holding a piece of meatroll to distract the tiny creature as her other hand pulls the membrane off of him.

Ralae was beyond excited. She was doing her best to think happy thoughts and loving thoughts. As more eggs cracked and hatched, she tossed her food and held it out. While some of the hatchlings took her food, none looked to her.
The adults seemed okay with them tossing food to the new fire lizards as long as they were not harming them. Ralae's brown eyes were huge as it looked like the dark colored flit to make its appearance first was going to look to Wykla. "Oh, I think he's yours! How handsome is he?"
Finally!
The gold egg was shaking violently. The girl could only dare to hope and hold her breath.

Wykla's face lights up with joy as Ralae confirms her suspicions. With careful fingers she pries the restricting membrane from the little flit's wings. "Oooooh! He's gonna be dark I think. I can't tell what color though in this light. He's adorable." The last sentence comes out almost as a sigh as Wykla is smitten with him.
With a blink of surprise he looks over his shoulder to find his wings are free. With a cheep he extends them and flaps to help dry them faster. He looks at the girl looking down at him as his eyes start to show shades of blues. In a single pounce he lands on his girl's lap and starts to demand more food ever louder.
Wykla jumps in surprise when he gets himself onto her lap, nearly dislodging the poor flit. Quickly she breaks off another piece and stuffs it into his mouth. "Boy, I'm glad they don't mind us here." She eyes the other adults warily when her boy starts screaming food. "Ralae! Don't throw the food like that. Hold it until one notices it in your hand then toss it to him... or her. You can do this!" Wykla tries to give helpful tips to her friend, wanting her to Impress one too.

"Good job! I bet you will know in the morning what color he is, not that it matters, right?" Ralae asked. Whatever color the flit was, he was extremely handsome. Squeaking, a green snapped meat from her fingers and then wandered away.
"Shards! I am trying.." The tween muttered.
Suddenly, the gold egg burst open and the little queen contained within squawked a welcome to the world. Her red eyes stared straight into Ralae's and without thought, the girl simply held out a meatroll and waited.
She was so perfect, a regular dragon in miniature. Ralae felt like her head was going to explode as she tried to breathe as quietly as possible. "Wykla, I think she is going to chose me..."

"No it doesn't matter at all." She smiles fondly down at the flit and pets him between popping pieces into his maw. After a couple more pieces she senses the flit slowing down and spaces the pieces further apart. Wykla coos to him, seeing his eyes turning blue.
He burps and turns to look over his shoulder. Watching the gold egg shatter. He gives a reassuring hum to the gold flit.
"Oh, look. What is he doing? Oh!" Her eyes go wide as she sees the gold flit shatter its egg and come out. "Ralae! It's the gold! You have to get her!" She holds her breath for her friend.

The gold snapped up the meat roll and hopped forward to demand another. Ralae quickly held out another piece of meat and sent soothing, happy thoughts of how much she would love the gold and how well she could take care of her.
"I think... I think..." Ralae was muttering. She barely moved forward and allowed the gold to take charge. Another large meat roll and the gold's eyes were starting to dull and change to a lazy green color. One more step and the gold simply fell into the teen's arms and was fast asleep.
"I can't believe it Wykla, she is asleep! And she is mine! I knew this was a good idea! Totally worth sneaking out." Ralae whispered happily.

Wykla does her best to muffle her squeal, so as not to scare the other flits, as she watches the gold accept Ralae. "Ral! She's so pretty! Good job." She gives a soft giggle. "So that's why you were holding out." She teases.
"You're right. This was a very good idea. And we both got one!" She smiles happily petting the flit in her lap. "Hrmmmm. What are you going to name her?" Giving a full cheep and seeing the gold go to sleep, he decides to follow suit. He curls up and tucks his head under his dark wing.

"I wasn't trying too. Honest! I just was hoping we would get the two best eggs and I think we did. I would be happy with any flit that wanted me." Ralae told her friend. The girl didn't really have a deceitful bone in her body. Plus, she knew Wykla was teasing more than anything.
"I don't know yet. What about you?" The girl looked up and gasped. "Oh boy, we have been out a while. We better get back or we are so going to get extra chores."

Wykla grins at her friend's reaction. Yup, her tease had worked. She looks down at her flit. "Yeah, I think your right. We did get the best two. C'mon lets get outta here before they change their minds." Carefully she moves the flit from her lap into the crook of her arm. He doesn't even notice.
She looks up at the sky and winces. "We're really going to be tired today." A bright grin splits her face, "but it was seriously worth it." With an after thought, she grabs the basket that had held the meatrolls. Heading back to the trail she makes a face. "I'd really rather not have extra chores." Waiting she gestures for her friend to go first.

The little gold was snoring contently in her new owner's arms. Gently, Ralae stood up and stretched. It would be a tricky climb down. Looking at the basket, she had an idea. "We can put them in the basket and then use the blanket to cover them up. That way we can get down without falling down."
She moved over to Wykla, her face full of wonder. This was just too wonderful. Tomorrow, she would have to explain a hungry, itchy gold but for now. Shrugging, she was almost afraid to let the gold go. "Well, I am going to put her in."
Oh so carefully, she laid her flit in the basket.

Wykla blinks in surprise. "Oh I suppose so." She sets the basket down and tucks a corner of the blanket inside before Ralae goes to put her flit in. Once she was sure the little gold was settled, Wykla takes her turn to settle hers. The rest of the blanket is gently snugged around the two flits.
"I can't believe their so adorable." She gives a happy sigh. With a grin at her friend, she takes one side of the basket. "Take the other side and we'll get them down together." The basket carried with caution between the two girls, they head home. Flits tucked safely away inside.
