Nobody could really accuse Yvette of being an optimist. She worried way too much about nearly everything, and in all honesty foresaw most things dealing with herself in an unfavorable manner. So when the girl subtly added "I don't think I'll be able to finish what they want..." with a tiny sigh at the end, it wasn't very surprising.
In her friend's arms, the darker haired girl turned a bit, simply to face the blonde a little better. There was a small smile on her lips. Smiles were rarely large on Yvette. Yvette was just the sort of girl who would look silly with big smiles or grins. After shifting a bit, the quieter girl seemed to almost melt into the attention. Hugs were a nice thing, but she rarely got them. Usually is was because she'd get flustered and push away again, but somehow this felt normal. This felt nice.
However, one word seemed to ruin this whole mood for the quiet girl. Crazy. True, her friend didn't mean it that way, but that tiny smile shifted into a tiny pout. Yet, somewhere in the back of her mind, memories of days in grade school seemed to echo the word. Kids were the cruelest when it came to teasing, and as much as poor Yvette wanted their taunting voices to leave her head for good, they just continued to replay in her mind.
In an effort to hide her slightly changed expression, she burrowed her head against her friend's shoulder.

"No, you can and will," Melody chided softly at her friends pessimism. Sure she knew it was coming, but it just made the words easier to come out. "You're smart and bloody brilliant and I have faith you can do what you need to."
There was a soft smile that almost matched Yvette's small one and she didn't hesitate to snuggle the girl even closer, as if her faith in her friend would give her the strength she needed. It was when the dark haired girl snuggled closer that Melody paused, wondering what was wrong. She knew Yvette didn't always seem fond of hugs (though she never seemed to mind Melody's) but it was of rare occasion that any sort of close affection like that was returned.
Frowning, the Vietnamese girl pulled back to glance at her. "Yvette? Did I say something wrong?"

"I... I'm not smart or brilliant..." There was a thing called modesty, and then there was a thing called too much modesty. Her friend, unfortunately, seemed wise to Yvette's tactics, easily separating herself from the girl's now ashamed face.
"N-no... i-it's nothing... I... I promise..." The dark-haired girl attempted to clear her face of any hint of the negativity still looming about in her mind. However, Yvette was no actress. One of the many things she didn't have the talent for.
"D-don't... don't worry about it, it's fine, Melody." She at least was able to manage a weak smile.

She went to argue, wanting to try and find a way to tell Yvette she was wrong. Sadly, before she could even think of a way to do so, her father walked back in with food and drinks for the girls. Lunch was a variety of sandwiches, from egg salad to peanut butter and jelly, with chips and pretzels to go with it. Taking the drinks he sat them down before the girls with a smile.
"Anything else you girls need before I disappear into the dining room to get some work done?"

Yvette's lips almost seemed to disappear the moment the food was brought out. It all looked delicious. Then again, part of the reason was because they weren't the cucumber sandwiches she always had for lunch. For a moment, she didn't say a word, as if mentally deciding what she wanted first. Peanut butter and jelly looked delicious, but she couldn't risk the jelly being something remotely strawberry. Egg salad was probably the safer bet if anything.
She was about to mentally check over the snacks on the side when she noticed the man's prompt.
"Oh... uh-um... Jianyu... th-thank you..." Her eyes got all doe-like, as if she was suddenly too shy to actually answer the question itself.

"No thank you, papa~" she replied with a smile. "If anything else, I can get it."
"All right then, you girls have fun." And with that he disappeared back into the kitchen to head into the dining room, leaving the two girls alone again.
And the minute he was gone Melody giggled and poked her friend's cheek with a fingernail. "You're so cute, Yvette."

Any bit of air left in Yvette's cheeks seemed to puff out from her lips the moment a finger poked it. Within 3 seconds her cheeks were red.
"Uh, uh, uh... n-no... no I'm not" she weakly offered, perhaps just adding more to the "cute" label she had just been given. "I... I'm j-just really hungry..."
The dark-haired girl wished there was a way to hide her face. It was red. She just knew it was red. She was embarrassed and red, and wished she could hide her face. However, she couldn't eat anything if she was hiding her face.

Melody almost dissolved into uncontrollable giggles right there, she really did. But her friend was embarrassed enough and it would be mean to torment her any more. But she really was adorable, whether she agreed or not.
"If you say so, Yvette~" Giggling again, softly, she grabbed up an egg salad sandwich and bite into it. But not before adding, "The PB&J is probably safe, by the way. Papa only eats grape jelly~ He's not big on strawberries. Not like Mama and I are."

"I-i do say so!" she childishly rebutted. For a moment, she remained quiet, eyes trying to avoid her friend's brown ones. So instead, she watched the pile of food. She saw tanned fingers slide in and slip an egg salad sandwich away. If there was only 1 sandwich, she might have squeaked in panic. However, the dark-haired girl remained as calm as her fluttering nerves could.
"I-it's okay... I'll j-just stick to the egg salad sandwiches." Not wanting to seem like a complete lemming, her own fingers awkwardly made their way to the pile, and instead, grabbed a pretzel. Where as the pretzel was something she could have just tossed into her mouth and probably swallowed in one mouthful, instead, the girl simply drew it up to her mouth and began to nibble. Sometimes one had to wonder if Yvette was a rabbit or squirrel more than a girl.

Oh if Yvette kept this up, Melody was going to die of cuteness overload! Did her friend really have no idea how adorable she was? More then likely not, with how much she protested otherwise.
Watching her dark haired friend steal a pretzel, so good those pretzels!, she smiled and began to eat rather delicately at the sandwich she held. Her mother's doing, she couldn't really make herself eat any other way and suddenly found herself feeling a bit self conscious of the way she ate. A light flush tinted her cheeks.
"You should be a rabbit for halloween," she teased to get her mind off of the way she ate. "You'd be an adorable one."

"I don't think Daddy would like me dressed up as a rabbit unless it was a big full-body suit..."
For most people, Halloween was a fun time, but for Yvette, it was a time of being extra careful. Daddy had a very particular view about the holiday. It wasn't fun and candy and good times to him. Instead, it was the worst night for his little girl to possibly get abducted. Sure, she was 18 years old, but Daddy couldn't be convinced otherwise.
And unless she was wearing a super baggy outfit that was unflattering at best, she really wasn't allowed to dress up either. As a kid, she was allowed to trick or treat to her heart's content and pig out on candy. Ever since puberty hit, her Daddy had pretty much prevented her from cashing in on more free candy. He claimed it was for the best, since she was too old to trick or treat.
Her tiny lip trembled slightly, because she couldn't help but think about how unfair it was. "...I-i don't think I'll be dressing up for Halloween..." She took another nibble on her pretzel.

A frown around her sandwich, eyes blinking. "Not even if you wore a modest, but cute dress and we just put bunny ears atop your head?" Which was exactly what she had been planning, cause she didn't think sweet little Yvette would wear anything to scandalous.
She might though, just to throw her mom for a loop. Huh, what should she be for Halloween? Time to start planning!
"What if I threw a costume party here at the house? And invited some friends? Would you be able to dress up then?"

For a moment, Yvette seemed busier with the pretzel than she was was with the conversation. However, she was trying to gather her thoughts in a manner that wouldn't cause her cheeks to explode in blush. This was a nearly impossible task for this particular teen, because there was no easy way to say it.
Taking in a deep breath, she shook her head. "No... Daddy says even when I am in modest clothing that I'd still be too tempting..." Yeah, her cheeks were red again.
"A-and... Daddy doesn't let me go out to parties unless he knows for sure that there won't be any boys." Her eyes sank down to her pretzel, which made her look cross-eyed. Daddy just didn't understand that boys could be friends. He just never gave any of them that chance.
And it would be a cold day in H-E-Double Hockey Sticks before her Daddy would warm up to the idea.

A smile. "That's sweet that he looks out for your well being so much. I'll admit it seems a bit harsh, but I suppose I can understand where he's coming from. One day, though, he'll be able to look at you and not worry anymore."
But until then, it was probably safer to play by the rules. Not that she'd want to purposely upset her dad, of course. "Well, how about we just invite female friends and make it a sleepover? If you can get the time off of course."
She didn't see why Yvette wouldn't be able to, as Halloween was still some time away. Better to plan in advance anyway! "We can have an inside costume party and eat candy and watch scary movies with no boys allowed." Actually that sounded pretty fun...

"I... I know Daddy loves me..." She finally finished 1 pretzel which should have only taken about 10 seconds to devour. Her eyes sank for a moment as she thought over what her Daddy had done for her when that monster attacked. He had risked his life to make sure she was safe. She always knew Daddy loved her. She always knew, yet it had been carved out in stone the moment he showed his love by valuing her own life over his own.
"I... I think that might work out..." she said quietly. She hadn't noticed that her eyes had started to leak rather suddenly as she thought over Daddy's accident.
"...you may need to talk to Daddy though... just to reassure him no boys will be showing up..." Water dripped down her cheek. She could tell it was water, because it felt wet. Where is it coming from?
