I'm going to crit mainly his chess hobby because that got my interest. Almost everyone in my family are chess players so I think I can help you a little.
First of all, I think you need to tone down his chess skill. Winning 69 games out of 70 is too much. You can say he's good at it but making him pro in such young age looks pretty unbelievable. Don't be afraid of losing!
smile Losing can be quite fun. And it doesn't matter if your character loses or wins. The story is what matters.
Now, let's continue. This is my biggest concern. I don't see a reason of why he would be so good in chess. I think he needs a new virtue that shows us why he is so good at chess. Is he fast thinker? Can he plan things before hand, like multiple possible moves in game? Good at concentration?
It might be a good idea to get rid of his Distracted flaw because chess players need to concentrate in the game. I speak from personal experience. I get easily distracted and that's why I suck at chess. I will never become a good chess player, no matter how hard my dad tries to get me into it. XP
Also, I would like to know more in general of his chess hobby. How he got into it? How long has he played? What kind of chess he likes to play most? Traditional that can take hours to finish? Speed chess? Does he like to solve chess problems?
Lastly, I'm very sorry if I made you confused. English isn't my first language. I hope my crit was even somewhat helpful.
smile Keep working on him. I know it's a hard work but don't give up. Eventually, you're gonna make it.
Oh, and did you know that
an asteroid Karpov is named after Anatoly Karpov, a former world chess champion?
