Rock breaks scissors
"These scissors are broken, they are unusable"
Scissors cuts paper
"This paper is strips, it cannot be used!"
Rock covers paper
"Rock is fine!No structural damage to rock!

The original game was cloth, knife, stone.
The preface stayed the same, though the cloth was used as a sling, therefore launching the stone out of reach and therefore making it unusable. The cloth "covered" the stone and was then swung around the person who then released one side of it and fired the stone a long distance.
Therefore: Knife cuts cloth, stone blunts knife, cloth slings stone.
The new version of the game simply reflects our modern utilities.
Maybe in the future it might be: cutting beam, uranium, lead box?
