Before she had left for the shop earlier that afternoon Kaida had been sure to inform Cas that she wasn’t sure what time she would get back and so because of this she wasn’t surprised to find that Cas had taken Victoria and Lucifel out for a while. Seeing as Rhine was busy with the Cafe she was left to her own devices and found herself eventually in her room sitting at the desk with an old journal cracked open. Flicking through the chicken scratch that was her hand writing from when she was little she smiled fondly at the stories written in the pages, the book wasn’t even half full; she’d given up on keeping a journal long ago. In fact it was only because of the staff that sat next to her that she even had it out. When Victoria and then Lucifel had come into their lives she had briefly considered starting one up again, in case something ever happened to them, but Cas already wrote one and she was never really that good at sticking to keeping one. But now with a third child excepted she once again considered it, a few entries even if they were far between where better than none after all. Giving another glance to the staff beside her she picked up a pen and after a moment of contemplation began to write.

Hello again Journal, it’s been awhile since I’ve written to you. More than a while actually, over twenty years. I’ve decided to start you up again because of an unexpected event today. Cassara and I, we’re married now by the way, have our third child on the way. Neither of us is pregnant mind you, adopted child. It all has to do with this store called Balcombe Curiosities, on the surface its perfectly normal but like everything in Gaia it has its own special surprise and that is that random items from there decide to come to life. Our first two children came from there as well, it seems to have taken a fondness to us. We don’t even go there with any intention of buying anything yet we seem to always come away with something, though to be fair Victoria’s item was delivered to us, we still need to find that woman and inquire about that. But I digress, I’d actually gone there today to just see the place, Cas has always been the one to go there, and meet Kay, a boy my eldest is caught up with. Not that I managed to do more than greet him, apparently the shop doesn’t like having items with will in it any longer than necessary. That’s really all I have to say for now, I haven’t exactly gotten back into the swing of journal writing yet I guess. Cas should be home soon though anyway, I need to inform of our latest child, I wonder what they’ll be like.

Love Kaida

It late and the Cafe was closing up, Kaida had just finished a shift as a waitress and giving Rhine and the rest of the staff a soft goodnight she headed up to the house. Victoria and Lucifel should be in bed by now and a quick peek told her that Cassara was in lounge room curled up asleep with a book in her lap, obviously having fallen to sleep whilst reading. Smiling fondly at the scene she made a mental note to go wake her up later but for now she wanted to go and get changed into something more comfortable.

With that in mind she headed towards her room. When she arrived she didn’t even pause for a moment to consider why it was open a crack when usually they kept it closed, she just dismissed it as Cas being tired when she last went through the door. Opening the door she stepped in only to suddenly find herself drenched in cold water and an empty pail falling next to her. Spluttering in surprise she cautiously looked around for anymore tricks before stepping into the room and closing the door. Who would have done that? It was completely out of character for Victoria and Cas and whilst she could be a bit of a trouble maker this wasn’t Lucifel’s style, to elaborate, painting her walls out of boredom or swinging from curtains was her thing. Looking around for clue’s she found a stack of items by the door that must have been used to get up to door height but all that told her was that the culprit didn’t know where the ladder was.

Giving a sigh and deciding she would figure this out later she got a towel out of the closet to dry herself off before grabbing her PJ’s and changing into them. The last thing she did was take out her hair from the bun she kept it in, giving a good shake to loosen it, before heading over to her desk to grab her brush and give it a once over otherwise with it wet it would tangle. As she was picking up the brush she noticed something that caused her to pause, the staff that she’d set upon the desk had lost all its colour. That meant...

Gasping slightly she dashed out of the room before carefully checking all the others. It wasn’t until she got to the room she started to clear out earlier in anticipation that she found what she was looking for, a small toddler sitting in the middle of the empty room grinning at her innocently. Looking over the colourful girl she asked quietly, “Are you...?”

In reply the girl nodded before saying with a large grin, “Hiya Mom! I’m Enyo, did you like my surprise?”.

It was a beautiful morning when Kaida and Enyo finally got around to their painting of Enyo’s room. All the furniture had been moved out into the hallway, temporarily blocking it much to everyone else’s annoyance, the floor had been covered in plastic, the skirting boards taped up and the ceiling covered in news paper, all of this done to prevent paint from getting on anything but the walls. With that done all that was left was to fill the balloons and start throwing.

“What colour do you think we should start with?” Kaida asked whilst inspecting their variety of paint cans.

“Red. It’s the start of the rainbow.” Enyo answered with a decisive nod, she was in the middle of sorting all the balloons into piles according to their colour. To avoid confusion paint would go in a balloon of the same colour.

Kaida nodded in agreement and pried open the lid of the red paint before scooping up a pouring jug, funnel and a red balloon. Attaching the balloon to the neck of the funnel she used the pouring jug to slowly pour in some paint. Enyo had abandoned her sorting at this point and was watching Kaida so that she could do this as well. “Don’t forget to not pour too much paint in otherwise it’ll burst before you want it to.” Kaida warned as she finished filling the balloon before pulling it off and tying the end.

Enyo hummed in acknowledgment and grabbed another funnel to help speed up the filling of the balloons. Once all the red balloons were filled the real fun started. Clearing everything out of the room Enyo and Kaida both tied up their hair into buns and put on showering caps to keep their hair safe from paint and put on goggles for their eyes, they were already wearing appropriate clothing. Whilst they looked silly this was all necessary according to Kaida, she knew her daughter, not all those balloons would be aimed towards the wall.

Giving wild grins to each other they both simultaneously shouted “ONE, TWO, THREE!” before releasing the balloons they held on different walls. The paint splattered everywhere, just as they wanted, even managing to get some on them. Getting into the spirit they started flinging balloon after balloon but as Kaida predicted it only took a few goes before Enyo suddenly turned from the wall she’d been flinging her balloon towards to Kaida and pelted her with it.

Letting out a surprised shout Kaida let out a decidedly evil grin before tackling Enyo, getting paint all over her. “TICKLE RETRIBUTION!” She shouted as she began tickle Enyo’s sides causing the girl to scream out protests in between laughter. Letting up her attack when Enyo started to go red in the face from her laughing she sat back and took in the mess that the room was.

“Hmmm, You think this is enough red?” she asked and received a nod in reply, the red had nearly completely covered the off-white colour the wall had been before. “We’ll we should take a break then whilst it dries, shouldn’t take more than four hours and then we can move onto the next colour.”.

This comment earned a startled ‘Wahhh!?!’ from Enyo, four hours!! That was forever, they’d never get done in a day. Still protesting this long wait Enyo was lead out of her room by her Mom to get washed up before the paint dried and cacked on.

---

In the end it took them two days to complete the room, Enyo had been happy to sleep in the hallway for one night (on her bed of course, there had been many complaints to how much room it took up). The room did look just how she wanted, colours splashed everywhere in a beautiful rainbow. It was a pity it wasn’t finished and never would be. She knew about their plans to move and so her secret part for her wall was left undone until that time. At least she’d have to fun of doing this all over again, Mom was so indulgent.

Kaida had been sitting at the dinning room table reading the news paper when Enyo approached her. “Hey Mooooooom, can you help me with my letter ‘n my numbers?” Usually at this sort of request Kaida would straight away reply with a yes but there was a look in her daughter’s eye that usually signalled she was planning something.

“Sure sweetie, I’d be glad to but is there any particular reason for this sudden interest?” Kaida asked as she got up and lead Enyo into the lounge room, that was the last place she’d seen the books they used.

Enyo shook her head, “Nooope, I just wanna be a good reader like Tori ‘cause then I won’t have ta bug her when I wanna read a story.”

Kaida was pretty sure that wasn’t the reason but she wasn’t going to do anything about it. Instead she scooped Enyo up into her lap, grabbed the books that where on the couch just as she thought and settled down to teach her.

“A is for apple...”

---

Late that night Enyo was holed up in her room, hiding under the blankets. With her she had a book and a flashlight, the book open in her lap and the flashlight on and focused on the book. Kaida’s feeling was right, Enyo was using the reading and numeracy lessons for trouble for the title of the book was labelled ‘1001 Pranks in easy steps’. It even had pictures!

Growth Prompt

Enyo is quite the little prankster! Up until now, her pranks have been mostly harmless. But what happens when a prank goes wrong? Does someone get hurt? How does she feel about that? How does she make up for it? Will she ever prank again?

Today was a bad day, a really, really bad day. It had started like every other day since they moved into their new house, with that annoying bird singing as loud as it could right outside her window, just as the sun peaked over the horizon. That bird had to be the one of the major downsides of the move in Enyo s’ opinion, before, when they lived above Uncle Rhi s’ café, it would be either the comforting sound of voices from the costumers drifting up or her own energy that woke her but now with the birds loud tweeting she found herself rising before she wanted to. Curse her inability to fall back to sleep once awake!

It was while she was grumping about this and getting ready for the day as usual that an idea came to her, an idea that on looking back was a bloody awful one.

Scare off the bird.

How? With one of her pranks of course. That should have been her first warning, she’d always used pranks as a way to bring cheer to people through chaos! Sure they’d occasionally be a bit embarrassed or angry at first but looking back later they’d laugh! Or if they continued to be a party pooper at least all the observers had a funny memory to look back on. But this prank she was planning? It wasn’t for those reasons, it was for her own personal gain and, dare she say, revenge.

Yes, she had clearly been tempted by the dark side when she planned that particular prank.

So, with her plan to prank the bird to oblivion in mind she went about the rest of the day as usual, all the while secretly plotting what she was going to do.

---

Only once night had fallen and everyone had returned to their rooms did Enyo set about implementing her devious plot.

Opening the locked chest she kept on her dresser she withdrew three fist sized stones that seemed to give off a glow the colour of moonlight. Locking the box again and putting the stones in her pocket she stalked over to one her windows and opened it as quietly as she could. Grabbing the piece of sturdy rope she had carefully placed on her desk she tied it quickly to the catch used to secure her blind before throwing it out the window.

Hopping up onto the sill she grabbed hold of the rope and gave it a firm tug to insure it was secure before starting her decent using it. It would have been much easier to just walk downstairs and out but that risked someone hearing her and telling her to get to bed, or Lucifel trying to join in. This way the only way someone would see her was if they looked outside or where in the practise room below her, which she knew they weren’t – noise from the room passed upstairs real easily.

Feet touching the ground she carefully sneaked around the house and towards the barn were the horses where. Whilst the bird may spend its morning right outside her window she knew for a fact that its nest was actually on top of said building.

Reaching the building she quickly started to shimmy up to the roof using the drain pipe, all the while giving thanks to the fact she was so light otherwise this would have been a lot harder. Puffing slightly when she got to the top from exertion she tried to be as silent as possible when she scrambled onto the roof- no use scaring the bird off temporarily now when in just a few minutes she’d have it scared off permanently.

Cautiously crawling over the roof she quickly found the nest and observing the sleeping bird she felt a moment of hesitation steel over her. If only she had listened to it then.

But no, instead she had continued her crawl forward and carefully placed the three stones around the resting bird in a triangle.

And then with a victorious smirk she activated them.

That should have been her second warning, even considering using the stones. They’d been a gift from Grandma, illusion stones. She could remember word for word the warning she’d been given when Grandma handed them too her after explaining how they worked.

”Now remember Enyo, whatever you do with these never use them to trap someone in a vision of terror, I’m giving them to you so you can make your imaginary games that bit more real or, if you wish, to re-live memories.”

She really should have listened to that warning. Really should have. But by the time the thought even entered her mind it was too late. She’d already set them off with the idea of ‘Something that would terrify a bird’.

And with that the stones glow flared up before taking on a sickly black hue. Really that itself should have been a third warning, usually the glow turned to that of sunshine when she used them.

Awakening with a screech of terror the bird flew straight up in the air before turning around and flying itself headlong into the roof.

Staring horrified Enyo found herself frozen as she watched the bird repeat this act, again, and again, and again until finally it hit the wrong angle and with a snap broke its right wing. The sickening snap jolted Enyo out of her stupor and leaped forward snatched up one of the stones before hurling it off the building, breaking the connection.

The bird stilled instantly, coming back to itself. As it did so the pain of bodily slamming itself repeatedly and that of a broken wing seem to register, causing it to start giving soft distressed little hoots as it limply hopped around, nearly falling over from the uneven balance.

Falling down from where she half stood Enyo stared at the sad sight, tears welling up slightly as what she’d caused hit her. Today was a bad day, a really, really bad day. But the birds day was way, way worse.

Sniffling slightly she crawled towards the bird, giving a soft murmur as the bird hopped back alarmed. “S’ok, S’ok, I won’t hurt you, I promise, I just need to catch you so I can fix your wing – I read ‘bout it in one of our books. Please let me help Mr. Birdie. Please, I’m real sorry.”

Seeming to understand her the bird stopped hopping backwards and let her hold it close after only a small protest at the jostling of its wing. With great difficultly she then got back down off the roof of the barn, crept back to the house, climbed back into her room using the rope, grabbed some bandages she kept for when she hurt herself setting up pranks and didn’t want to tell her parents and then quietly snuck up to the attic.

Setting the oddly cooperative bird down she then clumsily wrapped its broken wing to its body, leaving its other wing and its feet free before pulling an old bird cage from one of the piles of junk they kept up there.

Giving her a suspicious look Enyo gentle put the bird inside it. “Don’ worry Mr. Birdie, its only for a bit, once your wings all better I’ll let you go – you can sing all you want outside my window, ‘k? Until then I’ll look after you, promise.”

Giving a gentle coo the bird seemed to acknowledge her promise and settled in to sleep. Letting out a small yawn of her own Enyo considered following the birds example but knew that she couldn’t. She had to find a water bowl and get some bird food and figure out a way to hide this from her parents. What a mess. But at least she could say this – she was never going to prank for her own gain again. She’d learned her lesson and learned it well – chaos was no ones servant.
