Fellendar couldn't help but snort as the rowdy brown began to harass his unhatched siblings. While the former Harper didn't think the large hatchling looked particularly malicious, Dorath put a stop to his antics before anything exciting actually happened. With another soft snort and a roll of his eyes, he couldn't help but shake his head as the cheerful brown trotted right on over to the boys. Now that was his kind of dragon, he decided, even if it wasn't actually his. Having fun was a number one priority.

And speaking of priorities... Fellendar turned his attention from the first hatchling and glanced over at the females again, shading his eyes as though it might help him see. He still hadn't spotted his companion; he could only hope Roni was listening when they were told to leave their lizards off the Sands. She was probably just hiding behind a larger girl. Yeah, that sounded like her. Still. It didn't make the black-haired youth feel much better.

Jessalie watched with interest as the Mask in the Dark egg rocked and then the brown emerged. He seemed amused, and laughing about something to himself. Well, there was one dragon she wouldn't be impressing, but that was okay. He was an amusing, entertaining fellow, and Jessalie chuckled a little when he 'accidentally' on purpose bumped the Multiberries egg. It was good of Dorath to intervene, but Jessalie was somewhat curious what his motive had been. What was the joke he was playing, if it was a joke?

She followed his movements with her eyes, watching as he trotted towards the boys. She would wait and see who he impressed, hopefully to someone she knew, but if not, that was okay too. The dragon would know who was best, and Jessalie knew he would make some boy very happy. Who's life would be changed by the brown's choice? She would have to wait and see.

The Hatching had started suddenly--suddenly enough that Maisalyn still had Caryo in tow on her way to the Sands before her own foster-mother Jaina seemed to appear out of nowhere, as if from between. Gratefully, the young woman sent Caryo off with Jaina who took the young girl quite firmly in hand; Maisalyn knew the promise of getting to see the Hatching from a good vantage point ought to be enough to keep the girl behaving for now.

And then it was off to change, and then out onto the Sands, which at midday were perilously hot under the feet. Knowing well the protocol--even if this was the first time she was to stand as a candidate, she was by no means unfamiliar with Hatchings--she offered Dorath her bow of fealty.

Then it was settling in, as best one could, and hoping all would go well today; that no dragon would not be able to find its rider amongst those assembled to offer. The first egg cracked--ah, a brown! And one with a bent of mischief to him, it seemed. Maisalyn wished his future rider well, and hoped he'd have the strength and wit to keep his dragon from too much trouble.

Julian jumps as the first egg hatches. Shards for being too short! He couldn't see as a couple taller candidates had gotten in front of him. His feet were too hot too. Moving to the side and more towards the front to get around the taller candidates. Julian lays his eyes on the first brown dragonette and gasps softly. The beast was beautiful.

Of course, Iden was one of the first onto the sands -- he'd hurried at the first yell, though it had been rough at first, because neither Fern nor Pips had at all wanted to stay behind. Both flits were disgruntled with him for insisting, but Fern had finally relented, so long as Pips would stay with her, and Pips, well, took it upon himself to curl up into the softness of Iden's pillow. Well and that was good enough for him -- though he did wonder what the flits would do with the dragonets, right? But now was not the time for breaking rules.

At least not big ones, he amended as he watched the eggs rock -- and a brown spill out. Handsome fellow, if gangly in the same way all dragonets tended to be, right? And he did not at all blame him for nosing about the other eggs... It was charming, Iden thought as he found his place near the front, to see him looking so amused and pleased with himself. It was a dragonet after his own heart, he thought -- after all, it couldn't have harmed the wee one inside the other egg that much to take a little tumble, right?

The brown hatchling made his way through the boys, nudging a few here and there just to see what kind of reaction he'd get out of them. None of them, however, heard the dragon's voice in their heads, indicating that he was just playing around like he had been with the eggs.

That was, of course, until he found Zacharai.

Like the others he shoved the boy, his draconic laughter rumbling free from his chest at the sight. Come on, Mine! You and your Brath, we have so much to do together!

The Curled Leaf Egg starts to rock next, back and forth, slow and steady. It's clear that the dragon inside is in no rush to hatch.

Several time Jessalie thought the playful brown had impressed, judging by the way the brown nudged and bumped a boy, only to see him move on. Undecided, playful, or both? Jessalie didn't know, but turned her attention to the new rocking egg. Slow and steady, patient perhaps? Good for that dragon. No need to go crazy at a hatching and hurt someone; hopefully once the hatchling emerged, it would be just as calm.

She turned and smiled brightly when it seemed the brown had impressed, to somebody she didn't know. Well, she would just have to remedy that by talking to them after the hatching. Why, feasts were great fun and great for socializing, she would have to get to know all the new dragon riders!

I have a feeling you would get along well with that brown, Vogieth. A'jel said to his bonded, a soft smile on his tan face.

You really think so? Oh, I do hope so, mine! Vogieth was nothing but an overgrown dragonet himself it seemed at times. Unlike his rider who seemed to act well beyond his years.

As the first egg hatched and subsequently impressed (it was a brown with some rather odd markings, not that Lala really was anyone to judge, she hadn't had much experience with dragons in the past, so for all she knew, it wasn't odd at all. She'd only been here two days after all), the excitement almost seemed to infect her. Where a minute ago she had been wishing herself far from all this noise and all these masses of people, suddenly she was completely caught up in the hatching of these eggs. Now she understood all the excitement and hype. Suddenly, she hoped to the stars that she too, would impress.

Havocath and A'ras watched from their perch above. The large bronze had been as moody as A'ras since D'astel's demise. And while the hatching was suppose to be an exciting event, it was hard to not feel the absence of a man that should be here. A'ras still had his doubts about...the plague and D'astel but he hadn't the skills to prove anything different.

The event had give him a slight harsher demenor as of late. Uncertainties mixed with the thoughts of leadership within the Weyr. Things that most bronze riders thought about from time to time. A'ras hadn't considered that D'astel would fall so young and well some of the other options for Weyrleader didn't make him very happy. What if he were asked to back someone? Or would he try for it himself? Well, he'd rather fly the gold than let some of the other more 'conservative women haters' have the job. Ugh. That wasn't what he wanted to think of on this supposedly celebratory day...

A'ras, don't think so much on it right now...relax. thought Havocath as he curled his tail around his rider once again to keep him from leaning to far over the edge.

But still, A'ras stared down intently as the first dragon picked its rider...and hoped that things would smooth out in the near future.

Remembering to breath, Julian exhales then inhales again. He steps politely to the side (if he gets nudged) and smiles. He seemed a very good tempered brown and looked like he'd impressed. Julian thought it was a good omen that he'd impressed so quickly and easily.

He turns his attention back to the eggs and notices the curled leaf egg rocking. His fingers cross. For himself? For the dragon?

The brown wandered by him, but all Fellendar got was a jostle and nothing more. There was no mysterious headvoice, there was no sudden formation of any sort of bond, and the candidate knew this handsome brown was not his. Having Stood before, it didn't come as some earth-shattering realization. He'd long since learned not to pin his hopes on any dragons.

The former Harper did not recognized the boy the brown dragon did chose, but cheered quietly for him nonetheless. Impressions were important things, after all. When no other eggs hatched immediately, Fell began his search for Roni again, slowly working his way towards the edge of the boys' crowd.

Maisalyn watched the brown Impress with a slight smile; she didn't recognize his new rider, but then again she'd twice as busy recently and hadn't had time to make any of the other Candidate's acquaintances, excepting the ones she knew already from growing up around them.

The next egg began to rock, but Maisalyn wondered if one of its clutchmates might in fact hatch first, as it seemed to be taking its time. No matter, she supposed, it would hatch when it was ready.

Roni was, predictably, a mess by the time she got to the sands. Poor girl, she'd all but planned to hide under her bed when the dragons started humming, only to be spotted by one of the older girls and dragged along. She didn't want to be eaten by dragons! And Fell had said they didn't do that, but still! Reluctantly, she allowed herself to be lead out to the sands, dragging her feet all the way and practically bursting into tears when she realized she'd not be able to stand by Fell who would, certainly, protect her from aforementioned devouring by hatchlings.

She made do, after a bow that almost had her falling over, with cowering behind the same older girl that that'd spotted her in the first place. She didn't cower too close, either, for fear said girl might get mad if she did. Only when the brown hatched could her head be seen, peering around the girl's shoulders, her lip between her teeth. There was the brown. There was Fell. And he wasn't getting eaten, even though the little hatchling seemed to be trying to knock some of those poor boys over. That better not happen to her! The sands were hot, and with her luck, she'd get stepped on.

Olla dug her feet into the sands trying not to feel anxious, had she made the right decision? What if her mother found out? Would things work out in the end? She couldn't help but question and doubt. She was debating leaving the Sands entirely. The young woman held her arms crossed in front of her and held her elbows.

Another one of the eggs started to crack and Olla held her breath, the closest she'd ever been to a hatchling was seeing them at a gather, and even then her mother was keeping her busy running food from the kitchens. She felt foolish allowing hatchlings to fascinate her so, it wasn't as if she was holdbred seeing a dragon for the first time.

"Anyone else as nervous as me?" Olla muttered aloud and laughed.
