Magical Girl Yossy C a t h a r s i s Lolita will never be "Mainstream". This is old news. How many girls do you think are REALLY going to look into the source of Paramore's dress? None, they're just going to flock to Hot Topic and buy the closest thing they can. That phase will last a year or two at longest, and then they'll be over it. I don't get why people are so concerned. neutral
I think this is the truest statement pertaining to the matter at hand... However, I disagree that the phase will be over in a year. That fakey costumey Alice dress (you know the one) has been on the market for a several years at least, calling itself 'Lolita' and besmirching our good name! >_<
lol it really seems like I'm on an anti-Alice vendetta in this thread or something. xd
To be fair, there are countless other examples of such costumes. And there are so few of us true, modest lolitas to correct the masses, there isn't much we can do to affect the worldview that Lolita = sexy costume dress.
That, I firmly believe, is what upsets me moreso than anything else.I meant that each teenager, individually, will be over their "hot topic" phase within a relatively short time. And of course the next set of incoming highschool Freshman will inevitably pick up on any "quirky fashion" they can and create a cheap imitation of it. And that cycle will most likely continue- but that's just how fashion (and teenagers) works. Sorry if the way I said it was confusing. And I don't think slutty halloween costumes with cheap petticoats have anything at all to do with lolita. They're just supposed to be slutty and have a poofed out enough skirt so that people can look up and see lingerie. And since "the masses" really have no idea what Lolita is (at least any average person would just go WHUT?), I don't think there's much cause for concern regarding people confusing these costumes with a lolita outfit. The problem more likely lies with people new to the fashion trying to use these costumes as a cheap alternative to brand-name fashion items. Example, someone on sew_loli posted a project registry saying she was going to use that very dress as a foundation to modify and create something "more loli" out of it for the Alice premier. That's the only danger I see. And I for one like to wear these costumes at Halloween because I just don't dress slutty any other time of the year... and it's a good enough excuse for me!

Ah I found the link. Hm, I agree that the song is annoying. But the lighting and the actions seems interesting. It didn't bother me looking at the dress without a blouse. I'm afraid I do not understand why the dress has bothered you. sad

Apparently I'm the only one it bothered. XD It wasn't so much she was wearing the dress, it was more the fact that BECAUSE of it, lolita may see a popularity boom for the wrong reasons. If that makes sense? I feel like if someone wants to start wearing lolita, it should be because they like the fashion and what the fashion stands for, not OMG THE SINGER OF WHATWHAT WORE THIS ON TOUR AND i wanna be like HER. If someone sees the dress the singer wore and it made her happy and she did some research, that's a completely different situation. That probably doesn't make sense out loud either DX

Lol, The World Within, I don't think you pissed anyone off. wink I understand where you're coming from, I think the others do too. The truth is that there will probably be some girls who will get into it because they worship Paramore, Lady Gaga, or Lil Mama, but I think for the most part, it will just be a few items here and there, and that the girls that buy them will buy them because they like them and want to incorporate them into their style, and not imitate (or fail at imitating) us, or their idols.

I can understand your concern that a increase of popularity in lolita might cause more badly done, "Mall lolitas" let's call them. But it might not happen at all, and more importantly, what could be done for it if it does? I'm not terribly worried about them ruining lolita's "good name", no one I've ever tried to explain it to has ever not thought fetish. Sometimes even after I spent some time explaining otherwise. I don't think we really have a good name to ruin, at least in the public eye on this continent.

@Mouse: A few items here and there, I can handle. Hell if they're good quality and I have the money, I'll get it myself. xD Look at all the Victorian inspired lacey ruffled shirts floating around. I love a lot of them. There was this shirt at H&M I adored but didn't have money for. DX That I don't mind. It's just things going beyond that I'm afraid of.
@Kittywitch: I suppose you're right there. xD everyone I've ever talked to thought fetish too. Especially my grandma. I've gotten "How is it NOT a lolicon-type-thing if you're dressed like a LITTLE GIRL?" It makes me sad when people don't get it xD

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. Let's hope it doesn't get some media stamp of negativity, since that would make it much harder to walk around in it, having to face peoples misconceptions. I'd rather just face the stares and smiles. I'm glad though, that it was Hayley this time. Lady Gaga's lolita outfit was... was... I'm glad Hayley did it the way she did it. Not a fan of that song though.... I do like a few of their songs, but I think they have taken a new direction as of late.

Honestly, that video didn't bother me at all. People are used to seeing celebrities dress strangely in videos. She wasn't, as far as i can tell, saying that she is a Lolita, she simply wore it for a fairy-tale type music video, which i honestly think is a good use of the dress. I'm more concerned with Lady GaGa dressing in lolita, since she is super popular. Not that i have a problem with her liking the fashion and being influenced by it, and having the money to buy brand... it just... would be nice if nobody ever assumed i liked her just because i was wearing loli. (only happened once...)
As to loli becoming mainstream, its not going to happen any time soon. The beauty of mainstream fashion is that too much change, at any given time, is near impossible. I'd give you a summery of chapter 6 in my intro to fashion design textbook, but you'd probably be bored. xD Suffice it to say that i'm no more worried about loli becoming main stream then i am about the doornob shattering and killing me when i open the door.

Really, someone thought that? I'm a huge Gaga fan *her songs are so catchy* but at the same time, I too would not want to be called out on trying to be just like her because I'm wearing lolita. It's my own thing, not trying to follow anyone.
lawl on the mainstream and door knob theory. I'll take your word for it. I mean, I'm sure it's not the first time this has happened, celebrities have probably worn lolita stuff before I hit the scene and it's still not mainstream. Incorporated a tiny tiny bit, but not mainstream.

It only happened once, when i was wearing a rather over the top skirt... I had made a skirt out of this rather bright green fabric that had a rather large cupcake print on it. I was wearing it with a pink teeshirt which had a cupcake on it as well (there was pink in the print, it really wasn't as bad as it sounds, i swear~! And i was only wearing it because the commision fell through, it happened to fit me, and i was babysitting a little girl~!) It was the first time i'd heard of lady gaga, and apparently it made some chick at the craft store think of her angelic pretty dress.

Still, rather awkward I'm sure. Any pics of the outfit? I'm a sucker for bright colors. I usually wear darker and more "grown up" -I guess? Has to do with preference, not age or maturity I think, but people call them "old people colors"- lolita colors, but lately I've really liked some really bright stuff I've seen.

In my opinion Lady Gaga was fine. As far as I remember at least, it was just an AP setup of one matching print. The worst it could be is boring because it's just a set. . . except it's Angelic Pretty. The only thing that got to me with Gaga was the makeup. Blegh.

She wore it fine, as far as i remember. I just dislike her music, and therefor don't want it to be assumed that i was trying to dress like her. @doll: I don't have any pictures, and i gave the skirt away... Ah well. xD

I guess I can see where you are coming from but personally, I find it stupid to think that way.
If you truly love Lolita, even if it becomes popular or mainstream, you should still love it. You shouldn't hate something just because everyone else grows to like it too. Don't let others control your opinions on things.
And I highly doubt lolita is gonna get amazing-ly popular just from a music video either, especially if it is from a girl where the JSK not entirely right. (I can't say it's completely wrong. Because usually, I find that I can get away with wearing a JSK w/o a blouse during the summer.Still lolita.)
EDIT: These are my personal opinions so please do not get offended.
