It must have been nice for Vanessa to have such a strong father figure. It seemed most of the people he ran into came from well managed families. Fathers and mothers that actually raised their children, instead of hid from them and harassed them. Cassius sort of liked that he had to find a way to survive and was proud of how easily he'd managed on his own. It was survival of the fittest, afterall. Unfortunately that sometimes meant breaking the law for gambings sake, but Cassius didn't care. The system was beatable for that reason.

When he saw her maneuver around to demonstrate her cash-issue, he could only laugh lightly and shake his head. "Well, first off I really don't mind. See, I'm the one who offered anyways. And secondly, there's no way you'd pay me back, I don't do that sort of thing so don't worry." Plus he'd never accept money unless he won it.

When they entered the diner they were greeted by a young hostess. Cassius eyed her lightly (per usual) and then requested they be seated. When she collected menus and had everything ready, she sat them in a booth near the window. Cassius was already feeling better and he could smell all of the wonderful fried things and grease in the air. He loved this place.

"Order as much as you like, I know I'm starving so don't hold back." He nabbed a menu and eyed it thoughtfully. He had been to this diner maybe a thousand times and was only reading it to be polite.

He also liked how quick the place was, and within minutes a young waiter walked over and asked for their drink orders. "I'll have a chocolate shake, what would you like Vanessa?" He looked at her and nodded approvingly. Hopefully she really would order anything she liked. It wasn't like it was a flashy or expensive place anyways.

"Well, first off," Vanessa said, purposefully using the same words and tone that he had, "I appreciate the offer. Secondly, I would like to pay you back because I can. I don't need any charity."

Her stubborn pride was getting in the way here. Vanessa was a girl who believed in the sanctity of friendship, and the significance of favors. This, however, didn't fall into that category. She was more than willing to accept Cassius as a friend, but she wasn't going to just sit back and let him spoil her with his money. For most of her life, her family had been floundering just above the line of poverty. Money was important to her. Not because she was greedy, but because she had never had much of it. It bothered her that he would not let her return his kindness.

The wonderfully greasy smells of the place worked their magic on her, and Vanessa's stomach grumbled audibly. She sighed, torn between eating and sticking to her guns. She chose both.

"I'll get a cheeseburger, with fries and gravy," she smiled at the waiter, "and an apple juice."

After the waiter had left, she turned back to Cassius and smirked at him. "If you won't let me pay you back in cash- maybe there's something else I can do for you. If there isn't now, then I will owe you a favor sometime in the future."

Cassius told the waiter he also wanted a cheeseburger with fries, and then their order was off. Thank goodness for that.

When Vanessa spoke of charity, Cassius was quiet and wasn't sure why she was considering it as such. It would have been too complicated to explain his whole power structure with money and everything, so he only nodded kindly at first while drinking the complementary water.

"Well either way, don't worry. " He finally said, while leaning against the booth comfortably. He liked the booths at this place. It was much better then the rusty old park bench.

"I don't need any favors. I appreciate your concern though." He wasn't sure why she was so focused on the money part of it all. "We are both enjoying ourselves, and soon we will be enjoying food. So what more could I want?" He waved his hands lightly in the air to be dramatic. "Just sayin!"

The waiter then arrived with their drinks, and Cassius' eyes grew two sizes bigger as his milkshake was put in front of him.

"So what type of people do you enjoy hanging out with?" He wondered if she knew any of the girls he knew. It'd probably be rare since most of the girls he hung around were girly to the extreme and their personalities were somewhat different. But hey, everything was worth a shot.

If Cassius had bothered to explain his 'power structure,' Vanessa would probably have been very interested. For ten seconds. She was a girl with an honest soul and a heart of gold, but a very simple mind. Listening was not a virtue she possessed, especially when somebody was attempting to explain something complicated. It was good that Cassius only nodded.

"I'll worry if I want to," she protested stubbornly, and waved her fork at him in a playfully threatening manner. Vanessa didn't mind telling other people what to do, but being bossed around was another matter entirely.

She cocked an eyebrow skeptically at his response to her offer, and then shrugged. Cassius did seem to be enjoying himself, and she supposed it wasn't too far fetched to believe his claims. Vanessa would humour him, and pay him back with her positively invaluable company.

"I hang out with whoever," the auburn haired girl responded honestly. She had no problems meeting new people. "John Jr and Big Willy mostly. John Jr's my little brother, and he's really smart. He's gonna be a doctor or an astronaut or something, and make a good life for himself."

Her voice swelled with pride. John Jr was her whole world. There wasn't a mountain in the world Vanessa wouldn't move for her little brother.

He enjoyed the way she spoke. There was a sense of complete innocence mixed with an ideal happiness. It made him sort of jealous. He wished he could have those sorts of feelings on everything. He'd probably be as bubbly and easy-going to talk with and laugh a lot more in general.

"John Jr sounds awesome." he then commented while taking a sip of his milkshake. Siblings were another commodity that he didn't understand very well. He had many friends with brothers and sisters, but he knew he'd never understand that bond. Living in loneliness worked better for him. He was much too self-centered to worry about family members, anyways. "Sounds like he will do all kinds of great things. Keep cheering him on, I'm sure he appreciates it."

All their food arrived finally and Cassius was as thankful as ever. His stomach was starting to get restless. When his burger was in front of him he inhaled the smell and couldn't stop smiling. Hopefully Vanessa was just as excited. "Well, dive in!" He would have waited for her to take a bite, but he knew she didn't care about that sort of thing. That in itself was a nice change to usual dining.

As he devoured a few bites of his burger, he placed it back down on the plate and was glad to not feel faint anymore. Next he would move on to some fries. "So, what's Big Willy like?" He hadn't heard her describe anything about him. That of course made him curious.

"John Jr is awesome," Vanessa smiled at Cassius, glad that he was being so agreeable now. It was easier to like him when he wasn't arguing with her, or trying to give her things. She hadn't grown up with a lot of money, but Vanessa refused to let him think of her as a charity case. She had more pride than that.

It wasn't that Vanessa had anything against charity. When she put enough energy into thinking about it, she knew charity to be a wonderful thing. It was just that she didn't need it. There were so many other people worse off than she was. Mr. Rae was a practical, non-materialistic sort of man. Vanessa had been raised to appreciate the things that she had, and not to worry so much about the luxuries of life.

They had a television, but no computer. The only time she'd played video games was when she'd visited a friend's house- and they were all the more sweeter because of it. She also had no cellphone but, with the way crime and danger were escalating in Destiny City, Mr. Rae had seriously started reconsidering that decision.

When the waiter returned with their food Vanessa didn't need to be told to dive in. Her mouth watered at the site of their burgers, and she rubbed her hands together in delight as she eyed the juicy meet.

"Big Willy is big," she informed her new friend as though this was the most obvious thing in the world. Vanessa was trying to be funny. She wasn't sure if it was working, so she elaborated. "He's my boss, but really more of a friend- I've known him for years. He reminds me of Santa Clause because he's fat and has a really loud laugh, except he's bald and lactose intolerant."
