"I'm alright," Set'al answered Va'en, "Definitely ready to get started. I've got a lot of catching up to do."

Hmph. A touch of red-orange worked its way into Pipith's eyes when Morgath spoke to him. That was the only acknowledgement the larger bronze got, as the smaller chose what he deemed to be the best seat for him and His: at one of the ends of the semicircle, so as to be away from Akerth, and on whichever side of the brown Morgath was not. Even as he claimed their spot, he scolded Set'al for speaking to Va'en.

I told you, ignore them. We are better.

You do what you want, Set'al allowed, But I'm not going to be rude.

Set'al proceeded to obey when J'ev spoke, gathering his breakfast, settling in the seat Pipith had chosen, and taking his turn introducing himself before the lesson began. When it did, he paid very close attention. Everyone else here had been a candidate, as far as he knew, but he had not; he couldn't afford to not pay attention. Fortunately, there wasn't much of anything in the classroom to distract him.

Do you have any questions, Mine?

...not really, Set'al replied after a moment of thought. That seems pretty straightforward to me. A little disappointing, maybe, but quite clear, and so he shook his head.

'Ready to eat, that's for sure!' Vespereth said to Morgath, creeling quietly as she did so.

Cass turned to look at her green 'No whining about food, love, you'll eat shortly. Lets get seated. The sooner lessons begin the sooner you eat.'

'Alright, but only if Morgath and His sit next to us.' Vespereth said as Cass grabbed herself a plate of food and some Klah before settling into a chair. The little green sat herself down neatly at her rider's feet, looking up at her plate hungrily.

Cass motioned for Va'en to take the seat next to her and Vespereth before turning her gaze to her green again 'Don't beg, Vespereth. Begging is for dogs. And I know you like Morgath, but don't distract him during lessons. You pay attention to. Remember, we're going to show them just what us girls can do, huh?' Cass said with a smile to her lifemate.

Vespereth huffed when she was denied food, but straightened up a bit when reminded what they were here to do. Her's was right! If they wanted to be the best, they had to pay attention!

Cass introduced herself when called on, and listened to the rules as she ate. It was all stuff she had heard as a candidate, but she still paid attention just in case J'ev decided to throw in any surprises. After all, there might be a test later.

She shook her head when he asked if there were any questions and took a sip of her Klah.

Pretty good thing I'm not a drinker or a whore then.

You do have an attitude though and you can be cruel, making me wait to eat.

Y'ul's mental snickering stopped when Erath cut in sharply, her hunger echoing enough that it had gotten to a point where it outweighed her itches and her desire for a nap. She didn't seem upset or anything, just hungry, and she kept her head on Y'ul's leg even as the girl ate her own food. It was easier for the Rider to focus on her dragon's wants now that her own stomach was full and her thoughts were rumbling around. Also not being hungry of her own accord allowed her to pay closer attention to what J'ev was saying and she took special notes, wondering how she'd try to adapt. It was just as she'd thought, she wasn't a drinker or a whore who enjoyed the pleasures of the flesh, but sometimes she did have a problem with her temper despite trying to keep it calm. Very seldom did she act on it though, other than during the hatching, in which she'd gotten her revenge on Cass.

"She had it coming you know. Should have kept her manners in place and remembered who she was dealing with."

That doesn't mean you hit them in the face.

"Ask me if I care. Go on, do it. I'd probably hit her again if I could, make the marks matching."

Y'ul was whispering, not quite grasping that whole speaking in her mind thing like J'ev was suggesting they try to do. She was content to have her own voice in her for right now, thank you very much, but soon she'd have to give in and use the telepathic link that made her and Erath inseparable. Everyone else seemed to be getting it down pact to the point of near perfection, but hey - she couldn't be blamed for not getting it so awesome on her first try. It's not like she spent every day of her life growing up and practicing to master the art of talking in her head.

You really shouldn't talk like that.

F'len waved a hand back at Va'en as he and Skananth approached the others already gathered in the room.

"Good morning," Skananth returned Morgath's greeting just as brightly arching his neck happily as he replied politely. "Mine and I had a very good night, thank you. And I hope you and yours did as well. And I can't wait for the classes to begin. It's all so new."

He was still a bit wobbly but F'len's warm and steady hand on his shoulder helped to remind him to take it easy. Still It was exciting being around his clutchmates and he caught himself bouncing every so often before the gentle pressure would remind him to slow down. Skananth found a place next to F'len at the table as the weyrlings were instructed to eat. His stomach felt empty but he knew it was only a matter of time. F'len would not let him go hungry. Humming happily he set to watching his clutchmates. They were all so interesting.

F'len ate slowly despite feeling ravenous. There was a lot of work to be done today and if he ate too quickly there was a danger of being overfull. So he took time to savor his meal. It gave him time to consider what J've was telling them. The rules all seemed seemed fair to him. From all he had seen of the dragons they were incredibly powerful not only of body, but of mind. Getting used to sharing such a mind would be hard enough in a controlled atmosphere. Adding powerful emotions or mood altering substances to the mix could only lead to trouble. Especially since the young dragons probably couldn't control their own emotions very well at this point.

Since he had no questions F'len waited silently for the weyrlingmaster to continue.

T'rus's attention darted around the room as everyone arrived and settled. The look he wore was one of casual interest in curiosity but in truth he was noting names, temperaments, groupings, anything that might later prove useful. Va'en with his large, friendly bronze, certainly had a secure position in the group, and for the moment, T'rus saw no reason to begrudge him it. Oh, he could resent him in his own quiet way, but better to make a friend out of him.

Akerth, too, was observing.

Good morning, Tatleth. I would remind you, we are here to learn. Do not chatter. I know you will do well, if you listen. Always, always, that odd sort of patronizing affection in his tone. Perhaps a bit more affection, for Tatleth. She had chosen well, at the hatching. She would be as much of an asset as any green could, with a little training.

Morgath, meanwhile, got a mild, incurious look at his greeting. We are well. You and yours seem well. I am interested to see how we will do. To say he resented Morgath would be inaccurate. Bronzes were foolish, proud, vain creatures, yes. But he could work with that. Pride meant hardwork, sometimes. But, for what it was worth, he wasn't unaware of T'rus's resentment. For that reason, Morgath presented a problem, of sorts. He did not want his rider's vision to be clouded.

At the Weyrlingmaster's instruction, T'rus stood and gathered up food with the others. He was hungry, yes, but it was a confused sort of hunger, coming more from Akerth than himself. Not that Akerth was the sort to complain of such things, no. The Brown's focus was on his clutchmates, as the lesson did not yet concern him directly. T'rus, meanwhile, did not seem concerned about the rules so far. Everyone knew that Weyrlings were banned from fun. He introduced himself in his usual level, confident voice, pride leaking through just a little when he stated Akerth's name.

Throth? My clutchmates are hungry. They will focus better, fed. Will you tell yours this? Akerth was, of course, perfectly confident that it was his right to look to the care of his clutchmates. His tone was confident, but not so patronizing as it was when he spoke to the other weyrlings.

T'rus, picking up on his Brown's actions, bit back a sigh. Say something polite. Quickly.

Please. Akerth was not reluctant to obey, only confused. His please came off more like a statement than a question, though it was accompanied by a wave of moderate puzzlement.
PostPosted: Fri Feb 26, 2010 7:23 pm

Throth was roused from his half-napping state by Akerth, causing the dragon to lift his head curiously. A request? How peculiar. Weyrlings didn't usually try and talk to him, at least not this early in the lessons. It was so strange that the blue almost missed the point of the brown's message as he pondered. Though it took him the added moment, he did reply in due time. Shuffling his wings and "clearing his throat" much like an old schoolmaster, he said,

You should have patience, my little brown Akerth. In olden times, dragonriders were not taught how to properly care for their dragons and they had to learn the hard way. There were many instances of dragons getting block tail or hurting themselves because their riders did not know what to do for them. Dragons were not as comfortable as they are these days, I'm afraid. But, over time humans learned to teach other humans and—

J'ev must have caught wind of his blue droning on and shushed him mentally, for Throth paused then. If he had received a warning, he certainly seemed to heed it, and finished off his thought by saying, But those are words for another time, I'm afraid. There will be food, but you must be patient. Humans learn slowly, but retain much.

Meanwhile, the Weyrlingmaster pressed on.

"Right then, no questions? Well if ye think of any, let me know later on. So, rule number two: Come to lessons. Pretty easy that one. Ye can miss a few if yer sick or whatnot, but being here is important, not only for the material but also to build rapport with yer mates. Ye'll probably end up in a wing with one or two of 'em, so best get to know 'em now! Rule number three: Stay at the Weyr. They'll be no gallivantin' about while yer a Weyrling. Ye can't leave here until yer graduated, got it?" He wrote the words 'come to class' and "stay at the Weyr' on the board. "And, last but not least I suppose, clean up after yerself and yer dragon. It'll be a while before yer dragon can go Between, so best get used to using a shovel!"

Grinning, he added the last rule on the board and turned back to face the class. "We'll go over discipline and all that while our volunteers cut meat, but for now, who's ready to start cutting up wherries? Alright, let's see... Y'ul! Could ye go and get the two wherries from just outside the classroom? Bring 'em here and set them on the desk. And ye, Cass, right? Can ye bring the knives in as well?" J'ev cleared the front desk and threw an old table cloth over top. Once that was set up, he gestured for Cass and Y'ul to put the wherries and the knives down on it.

"So. We'll have two volunteers a day, different people every day, and by the end of the first few months ye'll get into the swing of things. Today let's have... Va'en and Se'tal. Get the bronzes off to good start." J'ev waved a hand, indicating that the two riders should come to the front. "Ye'll be cutting up meat for everyone today. I'll help with the first cuts and with the distributing, but ye all should watch closely. Overfeeding dragons is a common problem, but an avoidable one. Can anyone tell me what happens when ye overfeed a dragon?"

As he spoke he set up the wherries (one for each rider) and helped them get a good grip on the knife. Va'en was the first to receive assistance, J'ev moving on to Set'al only when he was sure that the other bronzerider was settled. "That's it. Try to cut the pieces a little smaller so they don't choke on 'em."

"I'm sure you'll catch up fine. If you need help with anything, I'd be willing to help you out if you need it." Va'en said with a nod to Set'al.

The large bronze sniffed impatiently at Pipith before returning his attention fully to Vespereth. 'Me as well. I'm ready to get something to eat, but I can wait until its time for us.' Morgath said to his sister before again addressing Skananth. 'We did. Thank you. It is. I look forward to it.'

Va'en had grabbed himself a plate of breakfast and some Klah before taking a seat next to Cass, Morgath settling in next to him and looking around at each of his clutchmates as they assumed their seats as well. When it came time to introduce himself, he did so. He had no questions at present, so he simply settled into his seat and took a long sip of his drink. The rules given weren't unfamiliar, but he did make a note to go back and forth with Morgath later on them to keep everything fresh.

Cutting meat for the dragons, that was a handy skill to learn. He had been mid-sip when he and Set'al were called on to the be day's volunteers to cut up the wherries for everyone. He quickly put it down and rose, moving to the front where they were going to be working. Not being the squeamish sort, Va'en wasn't bothered by blood or meat. It was just another thing to be learned and to do for his lifelong companion, as well as the rest of the class for today.

'Good luck, Va'enMine.' Morgath said encouraginly. 'You'll do great.'

Va'en took a deep breath and made sure his grip of his knife was firm. He took note of the first few cuts the J'ev helped him make. Making sure to set a steady, even pace as he took to cutting up the wherry in front of his. he paused to glance around at the other weyrlings. He had an idea as to the answer of the offered question, but he was willing to let someone else answer. If no answer came, he'd be happy to offer what he had in mind.

'Mine, if you know, answer.' The bronze rumbled softly from his seat. His rider quirked a brow at him and Morgath simply looked back with blue swirling eyes and gave his wings a small stretch before refolding them against his back.

Looking from his dragon back to the task at hand, Va'en sighed and spoke. "J'ev, sir, I may have an answer but I have a quick question first. When cutting meat for the young dragons, should we make all of the cut pieces of meat be of equal small size or could there be some variety for the larger colors? I'm not suggesting pieces big enough to choke. No indeed, but if all the meat is to be cut in equal size then I'd assume the larger dragons would have to eat a bit more to fill up when compared to smaller ones." He briefly paused in his carving up his wherry to offer a bit of a smile to the Weyrling Master. "I'd rather know than not." It was just a thought that occurred to him and one can never know unless they ask.

You must do it better than His, Mine, Pipith advised Set'al when he and Va'en were chosen to cut the meat.

It's just meat, Pipith, the young man replied, moving to do as J'ev asked. I don't think it's possible to do it better.

Of course it is! You have to make the pieces the right size, and do it fast. Finish before him!

Yeah, and then I'll cut myself, bleed everywhere, and that'll be the end of that. Just shut up and let me do this, alright?

...he had a point, Pipith had to admit, but he didn't shut up. Yet. Answer him, Mine. Tell him what happens when you overfeed a dragon.

I don't know what happens. Could you just be quiet and leave me alone already? Trying to ignore his nagging dragon's stare, he followed the Weyrlingmaster's instructions and cut the meat. Slowly. He'd really rather not cut himself instead of the wherry, thank you.

Cass gave a start as she was called on to go get the knives, with Y'ul of all people. She nodded her head to the weyrling master and smiled slightly, saying "Yes sir." as she got up and fetched the knives as she was bid. She contemplated dropping them on Y'uls foot as she passed the other girl on the way to the table that J'ev had motioned to, but decided against it. For one, Cass wasn't the type that liked to cause blood shed, and two, that seemed like a bad idea in the middle of lessons. She needed to make a good impression after all.

The little blond deposited the sharpened blades on the table and winked encouragingly to Va'en as he took his place behind a wherry and proceeded with the task. She gave Set'al a little smile of encouragement as well. No doubt he was a little overwhelmed, more so than the rest of them. He had been dragged into this so unexpectedly, after all.

She returned to her seat and was lovingly leaned against by her little green, making her smile down at her.

Vespereth was so proud of hers! Sure it wasn't exactly a hard task, but she had done it well and had encouraged the others. That was nice, her's was a nice person. Vespereth didn't pay much attention to the weyrling master's question, but when she heard her's rolling it around in her mind, thinking she might know the answer, Vespereth gave a little encouraging croon 'Speak up mine! No one else seems to know.'

Cass looked around the classroom and noted that no one else seemed to be jumping to answer, so she said "Because it will make them ill, sir?" It seemed logical. After all, people always felt ill if they ate too much, often ending in bed rest and perhaps quite a lot of vomiting. That was never pretty. Dragonets were just babies, after all. Well, talking babies, but babies all the same. They didn't know better.

Akerth was not entirely pleased with Throth's response. He could deal with being called 'little brown'. Relative to the blue, he was small, and he was brown. It was a relatively accurate descriptor and Akerth had more interest in accuracy than he did in pride. Pride got in the way of efficiency. But not being listened too, that was a bit more problematic. With a slight mental nudge from T'rus, he kept further comments to himself, but his eyes kept a hint of yellow until the Weyrlingmaster sent for food.

T'rus, for his part, did his best to listen, but the rules so far were simple and obvious. Of course he'd show up. Of course he wouldn't leave the Weyr. And everyone knew that dragon dung was part of being a weyrling. If he'd expected the secrets of dragon riding to be revealed in this first lesson, well, apparently that wasn't the case.

He watched, and listened, and managed to keep his smile until he was overlooked to assist. The Bronzes would have first try. Of course they would. He'd have to get used to that. Their riders would have the first of everything, now. First of the Weyr. Momentarily, as Set'al and Va'en moved to the front, T'rus's expression went sharply attentive and cold. But it was only for a breath, and then he only looked thoughtful and amused.

He'd have his chance, and he wouldn't try and show himself clever by asking silly questions. He would do, and do well. That's how you got ahead.

I know the answer. His mental tone was a bit triumphant and he seemed ready to call it out.

Of course you do. I want to know if they do. Be silent. As you tell me to be. He nudged T'rus none to gently in the leg, and the both of them were watching with calculated interest. In Akerth, that interest was clear, in T'rus, it hid, but barely, pressed closer to the surface by emotions he usual had control over.

It had been a good idea that Cass had tried nothing on Y'ul when the pair were sent to retrieve items, as Y'ul would have made sure that Cass had matching bruises. Erath warned her that violence was not the answer and that the Weyrlingmaster already had his eyes on the two of them from hatching, which was actually the only reason Y'ul hadn't tried something as well. She wanted to make a remark or two about Cass needing to match in order to look like such a pretty young lady, but that would have to wait until later. Erath could seem to understand Y'ul's want of holding a grudge as she appeared to be torching one of her own against a few people, but it was in both their best interests to just stay calm and quiet for now. There was always a chance for them to get their problems sorted out in future lessons, mainly when they were in flight. Y'ul was pretty sure Erath would have no problems then at doing various things.

When things had been set up and questions asked, Y'ul frowned that no one else appeared to be wanting to respond to such a simple question. Had they not been paying attention in Candidate lessons? Common sense, people! And what was with Cass's answer? Vague at best, what a lucky guess.

If you know, then say it or stop grumbling. You're doing us all no good fuming.

"If you overfeed a dragon you have a chance of rupturing their stomach as well as creating block tail, which results in having to manually remove the offending stoppage. Both are incredibly painful and sometimes fatal."

Good for you.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 04, 2010 12:54 pm

The old bluerider turned his attention away from the class when he was addressed by Va'en, bending down a little so he could hear the question better. "By all means, lad, ask away!" The question was certainly a valid one, and he nodded along as he spoke. Now there was a boy with a good head on his shoulders. "No, no, ye've got the right idea! Better to ask while ye have the chance. But ye've got the right idea. The bigger dragons'll need more than some of the littler ones, but ye'll just put more meat in the bucket. I'll help divvy it up when the time comes, so don't worry. Yer doing a great job." He gave the young bronzerider a pat on the shoulder, he moved to check on Set'al, nodding to himself as he passed. Slow and sure, but he hadn't told them to rush. So far so good.

Leaving the bronzeriders to finish with the meat, J'ev looked back out into the class, waiting for the answer to his question. One of the female greenriders was the first to speak up – perhaps the others were just being polite – and the Weyrlingmaster listened attentively. "Well, sick's a good answer," he replied with a nod. "Definitely a step in the right direction. Anyone else?" He let his gaze wander over T'rus and F'len, however neither seemed willing to volunteer an answer, if they had one. Pity.

Y'ul's answer came next, sounding like it came straight out of one of the dragonhealer hides in the Archives. Her way of speaking about medical topics certainly made sense. J'ev remembered her confrontation with a Healer on the Sands after Cavumuth had stolen a lady's broach and he almost gave a soft chuckle. "Yer on the right track as well. I've never heard of a dragon gettin' so bad that it was fatal or rupturing the stomach. Dragons, especially babies, are the first to make sure ye feel their pain when they want help. But we call it thicktail." J'ev wrote that word on the board as well. "It's like constipation or a stomach ache. It's a right pain to deal with, let me tell you. It's because of this that I want ye to pay attention when yer feeding. Whenever ye feel full, ye need to stop feeding them, no matter what they say. Yer a better judge of their hunger than they are at this stage."

Pausing to check on the meat and load some of it into the buckets, he asked over his shoulder, "Can anyone tell me some other common problems or ailments for young dragons?"

T'rus shot a quick grin at Y'ul when she answered, feeling he'd been proved right on his earlier thoughts about the use of a healer, or former healer, in their little group. She would certainly be useful. If only they could keep Erath and Akerth from trying to kill each other, anyway. It was an issue he had not yet decided how to deal with. Akerth didn't seem to bait the other dragon deliberately, but if they were seen snapping at each other, the weight of blame fell to him, the male rider who should know how to keep his dragon under control.

Turning his attention back to the Weyrlingmaster, he answered in his usual clear tone, speaking just a bit faster than normal to get out the words before Akerth shushed him. "A young dragon whose hide isn't oiled enough can develop cracks in their hide, sir."

Not that he could imagine a weyrling forgetting to oil their dragon. He could feel a sympathetic itch already, right at the base of the wings he had to keep reminding himself he didn't possess.

Akerth sent him a mild, Now let the others speak. But his concern was for other issues at the moment.

Yours answered well, Erath. The patronizing 'for a female' was so implicit in his tone that it needn't have been stated.

Tatleth, you must encourage yours to speak up. I am sure you are capable of it. Considering a moment he ignored Vespereth and turned his gaze to Skananth. Be sure yours contributes soon, Skananth.

Y'ul raised an eyebrow and frowned at T'rus as he looked over at her. There was no need for him to look so smug or surprised, it was basic common knowledge. Anyone who knew anything about dragons should at least speak as though they want to know more and he was doing pretty well on information too, so. Well, doing 'pretty good' meant he didn't sound like a deadglow or stay silent like the rest of the group was, at least in Y'ul's opinion. Cass could go get fired for all she cared.

Leave me alone.

Erath merely gave a mental shrug and brushed off the comments of her clutchsib, knowing good and well that his rider would never come close to matching Y'ul in smarts of any way. He also would never come close to matching Y'ul in pretty much anything they did actually, as a man was useless in Erath's eyes. A woman had been chosen by her for a reason, they'd all see it eventually - even Y'ul.

You can add to the conversation if you want. I know you know more.

Y'ul shook her head to Erath's suggestions, wondering her Green was trying to get her to show off a little. It was odd that she'd be trying to get Y'ul to be social anyway, and the woman ignored it all and tried to press away the feelings of hunger and itching that slowly invaded her mind.

Well, her answer hadn't been quite so detailed as Y'uls, but at least she'd had the guts to speak up, unlike everyone else, so Cass wasn't too irritated that the other girl had shown her up. Even then, J'ev corrected Y'ul, for all she was a former healer. The weyrling master posed another question, and though she knew an answer for certain, she decided to give others a chance to speak up as well.

Vespereth, crooned quietly at hers, proud that she had spoken up. The little green did bridle slightly when Akerth didn't acknowledge her's for a job well done, but she didn't let it show and went on ignoring him. She didn't want his attention anyways, the pushy prat. She was inwardly pleased when her sister shrugged him off. That would show him. The green's attention span was soon caught up by the wafting scent of fresh meat, making her stomach churn even more. She was hungry, and wished that Throth's would stop talking so that she could eat.

Cass winced slightly when her dragon's increased hunger started to gnaw at her own gut despite the fact that she'd just eaten a heart breakfast. The sensation almost made her go back for seconds, but she firmly put a mental foot down. She had to watch her waist after all, and she knew she was full, even if her stomach didn't seem to realize it. Once Vespereth was fed, she would feel better.
