.Homework with the TV on.
SOLO ~ Andrea and Lucas
Andrea stretched out on his stomach on the floor in front of the television, propped up with his elbows on his pillows and his chin resting on one hand. An algebra textbook lay open on the carpet in front of him, with a half-finished assignment on one page of the book, and a mechanical pencil forgotten in the crease of the book. He was not ordinarily one to be distracted by the TV, but the Olympics had proven an excellent use of the boy's attention. Far moreso than ...
Conic sections? He glanced down at the page and shrugged as he muted the television for a commercial break. The rest of the problems could wait until after the figure skating, at least. After all, this only happened once every four years.
When the program came back on, the dancer forgot again about his assignment and instead focused on the amazing technique of the skaters. He could balance on his toes and twirl with the best ballet dancers his age, but doing it on skates like these guys... that took it to a whole new level. Andrea had done a bit of skating for fun, and while his balance as a dancer made it easier for him than for some of his friends, he still could not imagine jumping and twirling and landing on one foot with skates on.
He would just stick to his own feet rather than blades; the male figure skaters were still impressive, but Andrea knew it was not really his thing.
His trance was broken as his brother Lucas's voice came from the doorway: "Hey, you know hockey is on, right?"
"Yeah," Andrea grunted in reply without enthusiasm and without a move towards the remote to change the channel.
"... Meaning you can watch that instead of fairy guys jumping around like idiots," Lucas clarified.
"I could."
Andrea's brother sighed heavily and reached down to steal the remote; Andrea swung a fist at him and grabbed it away. "Dude, go away and let me watch this. This is only on tonight, and there's a bunch more hockey. I'll even DVR the next game for you."
"Whatever," the younger boy grumbled. "Just thought we could actually watch some sports." He plopped down heavily close beside his brother and lunged again for the remote.
Andrea rolled away from him and glared, retaining control of the TV controller. "This is sort of like what I do for fun, so I find it interesting. Maybe I can enjoy something other than watching people run into each other sometimes. Go away and we'll watch hockey tomorrow." He reached out with his free hand and shoved Lucas's shoulder.
Lucas sighed and got up again, kicking at Andrea with a stocking foot. "Fine, enjoy your gay dancing stuff and we can watch real Olympics tomorrow." He stood over his elder brother for a moment and added teasingly, "Don't forget to finish your homework."
"Bye, Lucas," Andrea told him loudly, cutting him off, and flopped back onto his stack of pillows. Good thing he did not just miss like, all of that routine or anything....

.A Letter.SOLO ~ Andrea, to Cousin NicolettaAndrea, in mostly correct Italian, Dear Nicoletta, How are you? I am doing very well. School is going alright for me. I have a test tomorrow in Spanish, though, and so right now I keep trying to write my verbs like in Spanish. On my test, I will probably be having the opposite problem, but I think I will do okay. How are your English classes going? Other than school, things have been interesting here. I have been getting ready for my ballet recital at the end of April. We are dancing Stravinski's "Firebird", and I am Prince Ivan. I have already been practicing a lot, but I am still nervous about the performance. Good thing I still have one more month to get ready. My costume is not done yet, too, but I have seen drawings and I think it will look very awesome. I will be sure to send you pictures! (Probably email). My mom may take video for the internet, too. You and Uncle Mariano and Aunt Margaret will see it somehow, I promise. Lucas has some sort of school dance at the end of this school year, and he is very excited. He wants to ask a girl out, and has been bragging to me a lot. Hopefully Dad is teaching him how to get a girlfriend, so he does not bother me about it. I still do not have one, but I have some very nice girl friends. You should meet them the next time you visit. We can all go shopping. Gabby can come, too - she has been trying to act like a "big girl" a lot lately, which is very cute, but I think she secretly still thinks buying clothes is boring. I think Mom might be visiting you sometime soon, but I will not be along because I still have school. This summer, though, I will be there for sure. Oh, has anything weird happened around your town lately? Talk of terrorists or strange creatures in the night? There seem to always be stories about things like that here, but there have been a lot more than usual recently. I am not sure what is going on there. Anyway, I am out of things to say. I hope you and your parents are well. I cannot wait to see you again! ~Andrea
