Even Kaito couldn't make light of that.
He pursed his lips thoughtfully. "Well ... kitsunes are generally rather strong, aren't they?" he asked her. "Maybe you could take her with. And it's not like you won't have help there, either."
He looked at the baby again. "She looks about the same age as Leyenda and Kelirahc's kid, you two could be new mothers together!" He grinned brightly at her. "And Rhea will be there, and she's been working with kids all her life, what with being at the ranch and all, she could help too."
He paused for a moment. "Besides," he added, "weren't you the one who said that having children shouldn't stop people from traveling or doing what they want?"

If Kaito wasn't her nephew she would glare at him for that, because she had said that. Damn his memory, but she had said that. Though he did have a point about Leyenda and Kelirahc's kid and about Rhea....
His comment about kitsunes though made her pause.
"Are you sure she's a kitsune and not just a fox girl?"
Dog people, cat people... fox people... they were all the same except they had tails and ears, but kitsunes were in a class all of their own. She had heard rumours about them, they were immortal (naturally) and they generally had more than one tail, and they were also as supernatural magic was as one could get.
She peered down at the baby who was staring back at her with golden eyes, and was sucking on her tail like a normal baby would it's foot. Lin hated to sound like her mother but...
She was just so darn cute!

Kaito leaned over the baby and sniffed for a moment, then shrugged and looked back at Lin.
"She smells funny," he said simply.
Realizing how that had to sound, he added, "But I don't mean bad. I just mean different from most others. Like how ... Shiro and Ura and I just smell like a mixture of cats and humans, and the mers smell like a mixture of humans and fish ..."
He looked down at the baby again. "She doesn't smell like human and fox. There's something else."

Well that was news to her, but Lin knew she would have to trust Kaito on that He did have the better sense of smell out of anyone, of course he would be able to tell the difference.
"I guess wait to see if she sprouts another tail."
"Gah!"
Lin glanced back in time to see Senka in her daughter's clutches having her tail almost eaten, sucked on... whatever. Senka had been sleeping in Lin's bag.
"And the other thing I forgot," Lin murmured, prying Senka away, "You be nice, and the rest of you don't fly close you're probably a choking hazard."
She glanced up to see her butterflies on the loose again. Great... butterflies and a child who would shove anything into her mouth.
The little babe squealed at the sight of the four butterflies clapping her hands and waving her feet up in the air.

Kaito chuckled and held a hand out to Senka, to get her away from the baby. "You know, Lin, you're going to have to retrain all of them ... they're all big enough to choke her, and babies like to stick things in their mouths."
He glanced over at her. "And you still have to pick a name for her ..."

The idea of raising a baby was daulting enough without having to add retraining her pets. Actually the butterflies would be easy, they were eager to please, but Senka had a mind of her own.
She gave the cat to Kaito and looked back thoughtfully. Japanese would be fitting she thought as she picked the baby up. Now the question was what...
Lin hummed for a moment and she uhmmed for a moment all the while tucking her necklace under her shirt so the little babe wouldn't grab it. It occured to Lin absently that when butterfly season came around she was going to be so screwed.
"Miyuki?" she finally suggested.

Kaito stroked Senka absently, grinning at the baby in Lin's arms. "That's a pretty name," he cooed. He reached forward with one hand and poked the baby's nose gently. "What do you think, little one? Do you like your new name?"
She was so cute. Kaito might like to act cool and uncaring when it came to a lot of things, but he did have a weakness for cuteness - especially when it was babies.

The newly named Miyuki giggled, smiling a wide smile as she tried to reach out and grab his finger. Probably with the intention of sticking it into her mouth.
"Well now that, that's settled...." Lin murmured, "I better make a list of what I need."
Now that she was somewhat calming down, what was done was done she couldn't remove the fact that she was now a mother. How she felt about it, she wasn't quite sure yet. All she knew was that she had three days to get everything together.
Even though Miyuki was very cute.

Kaito was surprised. "Without even seeing Obaa-san or Ojii-san?" he asked incredulously. "Or anyone else? Straight to work? Even Shiro's not that crazy!"
Not to mention, if they didn't stop and see their parents first thing, their mother would be very upset.
Which reminded him, he really should go see her ...

"Kaito, we leave in three days and Miyuki needs things. She needs a carrier, a foldable crib, diapers, clothes, a way to feed her while we travel...."
Her mind was already running a mile a minute, while she was honest when she said having children shouldn't stop a person from doing what they loved to do. Lin was still her father's daughter and she was a realist. To have the first trip be through a desert was not a good starting point.
"Something on the carrier so she would be sheilded from the sun, maybe a hat..." maybe she should bring sun lotion, "Toys of course, a travel trip like this will bore her out of her mind..."
When she finally took a mental breath, Lin was sure she only covered the tip of the iceberg (thank the goddesses she decided to buy another bag).
"I will see my parents of course, I have to introduce her to everyone but at the moment I need to think of what she needs."

"Keep in mind, your parents might have a better idea than you," Kaito reminded her, "especially as your mom traveled with Jin when he was a baby. You're being silly, you need to show her to your parents before you worry about the technical things."
He tapped her on the top of her head. "Come on."

It was an unexpected surprise and she was still on the go, ti was hard not to worry about the technical things.
She looked up at Kaito and sighed, "Alright, I'll go visit my parents first."
Maybe she could hope that her grandmother had given one too many sets in her glee with having blood children. The thought of Grandmother Mi made Lin shudder mentally, there was one visit she could most certainly save for later.
Much later.
Adjusting Miyuki in her arms she headed back out of her room. She knew her father had been changing diapers so they were probably in their master bed room.
"What about you? Elnara-sissy and Lore would be happy to hear you're back, actually the fact Storm and Starr grew while we were gone...."

Kaito chuckled. "Well, I'm sure Kaa-san will have stopped squealing by now, so I think it's safe to go see them."
He laughed again and hefted his bag on his shoulder. "Anyways, you have fun with your parents. Make sure you come and say goodbye before you leave again, will you? I don't think any of the rest of us are coming with."

Lin blinked in surprise, she hadn't thought about that. She had thought maybe at least Shiro would like to come back or something.
"Don't worry, I will," she assured him.

"Good," Kaito grinned. He started for the door, waving at her over his shoulder. "See you later! And take good care of that kid! If I'm right and she's a kitsune, you owe me a sushi dinner!"
Why? Because he wanted one, and he was sure he was right.
