He paused from his salad, setting the fork on the plate so that he was not distracted as he answered a few more questions. "Alas, I only moved out here a half a year ago, and my free time has been rather limited. I have a few friends who are girls, but I have not found myself a girlfriend yet."

He paused to take a sip of the complimentary water, then continued onward. "Greasy food makes me physically nauseous. Mother likes to call my stomach 'delicate.' I can handle small amounts of grease, but when the food is covered, I cannot bring myself to eat it."

Once more, his rather well maintained fingers dipped down and picked up his fork, signaling he was ready to resume eating again. Before he resumed the careful stabbing of various vegetables, he could not resist asking "I am curious, what sort of conditioner you use? I am close to running out, so I need to purchase some more." The faint click of the fork bumping against the plate could be heard as the teal-haired lad stabbed up a tomato slice. As his companion spoke, he would be nibbling along the fruit until it vanished.

Cassius was finishing up his milkshake when Howl's hair question came about. Did Howl just ask about his hair secrets? Cassius swallowed his last gulp of milkshake before staring the lad down. Cassius was not someone who enjoyed sharing his own tricks of the trade. This was going to be awkward. Just from Cassius' (unhidden) expression, yes, this was definitely going to be awkward.

From Howl's perspective, it might have looked like Cassius was just confused from the question, and in truth he really was. "Man I couldn't even tell you. I don't pay attention to whatever my dad buys me." He finally answered, while placing his hand through his hair almost too naturally. Yeaaah. Cassius had no problem ever lying. So of course he'd lie instead of downright acting like a jerk back or something.

"Maybe just stick to whatever you've been using because you're hair looks great." Cassius hoped his whole response back was believable. And if it wasn't, he didn't care. Now he was all preoccupied and worried that Howl was trying to get all sorts of information on him. Was Howl learning too much at this point? Cassius was far too suspicious and paranoid of others when a situation he couldn't control appeared. Especially when it involved other guys.

It was not hard to notice how Cassius' gaze went from polite to near intense the moment he had asked the question. As a casual mental note, he observed that asking about Mr. James' hair was a taboo subject at best. Howl's smile remained ever constant, seeming unaffected by the lack of a definite answer. When his tomato had been consumed, his fork plucked up a slice of crisp cucumber and he took to nibbling on that. Before he could finish with the cucumber, the edges of his lips curled up even higher, as if finding something amusing in Cassius' advice. However, it was only when the cucumber had vanished that he offered an explanation for the expression on his face.

"I would prefer to at least get rid of one of my recent hair regiments. I am, unfortunately, forced into... what is the correct term... I believe the phrase is 'swirlies.' When someone forces your head into a toilet and flushes." It was not a joke, but Howl chuckled for a moment, as if it was something that you were supposed to laugh at. Where many who would confess such a thing would be upset, vengeful, or perhaps sobbing, the English lad confessed such pleasantly.

"I suspect toilet water is not exactly all that healthy for my hair, but I will keep your advice in mind."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 14, 2010 2:38 pm

Ok so. If Howl was getting swirled at school, he was most definitely NOT plotting against Cassius for all doom related hair and things. Cassius was still a tiny bit suspicious just in case. But, ignoring that for now, his face was even more dramatic as he stared at his good-haired friend.

He felt horrible for Howl. That was just ridiculous. "Whaaaaat. Why aren't you fighting back? You shouldn't let someone push you around like that." He wondered if it was a bully situation. Guys tended to act on their jealousy physically, whereas girls just made everyone else feel like s**t about it. Cassius wasn't sure which was better then the other, but either way Howl needed to take a stand.

"I wouldn't be worrying about you hair, but rather worrying about the much needed revenge on whoever is giving you such a hard time." Cassius sat back in his chair quite unpleased with the situation. Cassius may have looked super girly but he was very athletic and even strong. He had to deal with fights most nights after he won everything in a gamble. He also took on martial arts at a young age so he could learn to kick his father to the curb. Once he pulled his hair back with a rubber band people knew that he was ready to kick your butt.

Especially when it came to insecure ugly bullies who were jealous of him. "Please tell me you will consider taking a wooden sword and showing them who's boss?" Howl WAS a fencing guy, afterall.

"I am a pacifist."

It was simply stated as he chewed thoughtfully on a few green leaves. No regret was in his tone. When he finished and swallowed the few bits of green in his mouth, he then clarified further.

"I do not believe in fighting. Sparring in a bout for fencing is okay, but I am not a fan of fighting. I would also like to note that it is a mob of students. Logically, I stand no chance."

Howl smiled. It probably wasn't an appropriate time for a smile, but there it was on his face still. Nothing overly confident, just something rather gentle.

"I have been told that the only way they will stop is if I cut my hair. If I were to let them push me around, then I would have cut my hair a long while ago. I have no plans to cut my hair, so I suspect they will continue until they get bored of the same old routine."

Thoughtfully, he stabbed at some leaves on his plate, which was slowly showing off more plate as the English lad continued to eat. Before popping the food into his mouth, he offered a simple "I do appreciate your concern though, Mr. James."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:09 pm

Uggggggh. Cassius was so not a pacifist. He liked his fists dammit! But whatever. He was not preaching anything else to poor Howl. It was his life and despite Cassius' bratty attitude, he never coached people on what they should or shouldn't do. That would make him like his father, and that was a big no no. "I understand, Howl. I just hope it ends soon. If it doesn't you should really think about doing something about it." And with that, Cassius zipped his lips on the subject. At least he had tried.

"I must admit, I am so glad to hear that you'd never give in and cut your hair." That showed that Howl had his own ways of driving them crazy at least. Cassius wondered if that tactic did come with some spiffy results. Unfortunately, Cassius was too much of a hot-head to ever try a tactic so pleasant.

When Howl thanked him for showing concern, Cassius only nodded gently while giving Howl a familiar grin. "What can I say- us good haired guys need to look out for each other. I really am happy to help in the future if anyone else gives you a hard time." Hey, that just meant it was an excuse for Cassius to beat some idiots up. He didn't see that as an actual possibility, but he once again had to throw it out there!

He just liked reasons to use his fists.

There was no hope in doing anything about it. Jesse Alvarez was almost an exception to any rule at Hillworth. Discipline of any sort was pointless and a waste of time. At least, it seemed to be the motto amongst the faculty. At the mention of "doing something" if Howl's torture prolonged much longer, the teal-haired lad nodded his head to acknowledge the advice. He most likely would not be following it, but it was always food for thought.

The mention of assistance was also noted, but Howl only mentally noted it. Cassius seemed older. Maybe he was attending Sovereign Heights for school? Legally, Howl suspected that Cassius could not do a thing about it, since beating up a minor was an offense. Oh, those wheels in Howl's mind needed to stop turning long enough to at least reply. Setting his fork down, he attentively placed his eyes to the blonde's gray ones.

"Hopefully I do not come across as prying too much, but I am curious as to what age you decided to start growing your hair out, Mr. James?" Howl had his own extremely personal reasons, but from his experience, most people did not have the same problems as him when he was growing up.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:47 pm

Cassius had no problem with Howl's next question, thankfully. Although he did feel a gulp enter his throat since the topic was sort of a heavy one. He had no problem actually speaking about it, he just hated when others felt sorry for him. "I started growing it out after my mother died." he nodded solemnly before continuing on. "I don't mean to bring up a heavy subject- but it is true. My mother had long beautiful blonde hair. I guess I always expected that it was a way I could keep her in my life." Yes, it looked good, and yes, it suited him. But that was Cassius' true reason.

Cassius wasn't a sappy emotional guy in general, but when it came to his mother he was. He knew it killed his father to see his son radiating their mother everyday. That might have been a great incentive to keep doing it- but for Cassius, it really was to keep a part of his mother alive for as long as possible. He did it for himself. And he knew if his mother were alive she would have loved it.

"How about for you, Howl? Yours is much longer then mine. I imagine it is difficult to keep up?" He wondered if his would ever get much longer then it was. Seeing how it looked on Howl brought about ideas for letting his grow even more. It would probably make girls jealous but that was just an added bonus.

There was a moment of silence. It was not asked for, but the reasoning in itself was enough to cause the momentary somber silence. Howl did not dare to eat another vegetable until he felt he had let a sufficient amount of respectful silence pass.

"My condolences, Mr. James, even if delayed," he offered eventually. For a moment, he thought over the possibility of either his own mother or father passing. Howl might not have seen them very frequently due to their busy work schedules, but he cherished every brief moment with them.

The question was easily returned to him, and for a moment, he seemed to almost debate responding. One of his fingers gently smoothed over one of the gems hanging from his ears before he seemed to answer, as if the simple motion was enough to give him the confidence to answer honestly.

"My mother was a heavy influence in my decision to grow my hair out. I started eight years ago, ironically when I was 8 years old." His finger smoothed over the turquoise stone at his ear again. "I actually grew up with a lot of harsh teasing in my life, and my mother was the one who was able to help me look at it all from a better perspective." His voice during the whole explanation seemed a bit distanced, as if trying to avoid attaching any sort of emotion to the words. Even after eight years, he was not exactly fond of speaking of the specific teasing he had gone through in elementary school.

"Don't worry about it, but thanks." Answered Cassius, while looking down with a small grin. Howl really was a great guy. Even if the Mr. James sounded weird, Cassius supposed he could forgive him for that! "Your mother sounds like she is a wonderful person." He wouldn't have expected anything else, especially at how Howl was raised and how he presented himself this entire time. "I think it's great that you've chosen to listen to everything your mother has taught you. Shows what a respectful guy you are." Plus she was right- that really was the right way to go about life situations.

It wasn't often that Cassius ran into someone who made the world better. At this point in time, all doubts aside, he was considering Howl to be one of those people. He felt like it had been ages since running into a good person. That was probably sure sign that he needed to find some other people to hang out with. Cassius honestly didn't feel as though he deserved those kind of people.

"It looks like you've been enjoying that salad." Cassius grinned when he noticed most of it was gone. Howl must have been very hungry since arriving. "I still think you deserve something as delicious as a milkshake, but that's just me." He raised his arms playfully while sitting back in his chair with a sigh. It was always strange to find someone you actually had things in common with. Who knew that the guy he was trying to figure out just moments ago would turn out to be so kind? Life was always that silly.

It almost felt as if Howl's current blonde companion was gushing about what wonderful people Howl and his family were. For a brief moment, a few thoughts flickered in the back of his mind.

His mother and father were wonderful people.

They deserved a far better son who would not disgrace the family name.

His father would not accept anything less than full respect for his mother.

There was not a hint to any of these thoughts passing through his mind based upon his expression, which remained calm and almost serene. All he offered on this subject was a simple "I am quite fond of my parents." He nodded his head and moved onto the subject of his salad.

"I must confess, I did not exactly have a very filling lunch today." Clarification, he had nitpicked at the mystery meat Hillworth had attempted to pass off as food. "I suspect my stomach is just trying to make up for the abuse it had to suffer earlier." He laughed ever so politely, momentarily covering his mouth as if to muffle the sound. At the mention of a milkshake, he tilted his head ever so slightly to the left, causing his earrings to sway gently. "I may have to consider that for another time when I am in less of a hurry. I do not want to be late for my appointment."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 14, 2010 8:01 pm

Cassius had totally forgotten about Howl's appointment. This should not have been surprising since Cassius never remembered his own appointments in life. So how could he possibility remember someone else's? It really was tough being blonde. Or even tougher being a lazy idiot.

"Oh crap, what time was your appointment at?" Cassius most definitely didn't have a watch, so he just looked around the diner as if ten clocks were on the wall or something. Howl did not look like someone who would ever forget their appointments. In a way, Cassius sort of assumed that Howl would speak up when it was time to go. But what if he was just being polite again?? Nice people were really just too nice.

"Well, hopefully I can meet you for a future milkshake or something. I'll be interested to hear how school is going especially with your classmates." He coughed slightly as if showing his disapproval for the stupid asses that ruined Howl's hair. But really, that would be nice sometime. It was always a pleasure to see a familiar face, let alone some nice company. Especially when it was a guy Cassius enjoyed talking too. That was indeed rare, if only Howl knew.

Rather than answer the question immediately, the effeminate lad simply tugged softly at the edge of his left sweater sleeve just enough so he could glance to his watch. Howl had rather thin wrists and elegant hands for a boy, but there wasn't exactly a whole lot about the teal-haired lad that was very masculine. His fingers slipped away from his sweater sleeve and his eyes drifted back up to Cassius' gray eyes.

"I still have time to make my appointment." There was no way he would mention the actual time. Any intelligent person would be able to make the connection between the Hillworth curfew to the "appointment time" if Howl dared to offer it.

At the mention of a future encounter, a pleased smile found its way onto his lips. Even the rude coughed hint went ignored as he responded in the politest of fashions. "I would rather enjoy another meeting in the future, Mr. James." While nodding his head, he carefully tucked his chair away from the table so he could stand once more. It was hard to reach into your back pocket for your wallet if you were sitting down. His trusty black leather wallet made a brief appearance as it was pulled out, money was pulled out, and it was soon enough returned to its rightful place in the back right pocket.

"This should more than cover my bill, and the rest should be used for tip, Mr. James. I will take my leave now." Based off of how formal Howl was, he once more extended his hand for a handshake.

"It was a pleasure meeting you, Mr. Cassius James."
PostPosted: Sun Feb 14, 2010 8:31 pm

Cassius was relieved that Howl was going to make his appointment after all. He would have felt terrible for making him miss something that was in his schedule. Before he could even offer to pay for Howl's salad, money was already handed out and Cassius could do nothing about it. It'd be silly to make a scene or something. "It was a pleasure meeting you too, Howl Wickham." And with that, he shook the boy's hand sternly before watching him gather himself and leave.

Cassius leaned back in his seat again while calling for the waitress to bring him the check. He felt considerably lighter then when he first arrived at the diner. Not only was his stomach filled but mentally he was equally full. He looked forward to meeting Howl for a chat in the future.

This was just another reason why it was always good to bug random people. Howl was a good guy and Cassius wondered if he should give other guys a chance for a meeting once in awhile. Once his bill was paid and everything was set, he soon left the diner, only to begin his usual rounds of gambling for the evening.

He'd worry about his social life later and until his next meal...
