She looked nearly heartbroken until Dev picked up the bracelet and made it magically turn into a necklace! She beamed as it settled gracefully, the beads shining. She took a few steps back and did her best 'Beautiful' pose for him.
She laughed in joy and looked to Dev, quiet for only a moment. She rushed to his side and nuzzled into his mane up against his neck. "You're the best," she told him. "I will keep it forever!" and she meant it...at least as much as a young foal could. She would do her best to protect her gift from him.
She took a step back and lowered her body down to the ground next to his, using him to prop on as she relaxed. Her energy was starting to wear out. "Do you need more food, more water?" she looked up to him, her eyes a little sleepy looking, but she was trying to hold on. "I can get you more if you'd like?"

Devicius chuckled at her enthusiasm, for once finding her little act quite entertaining. Foal or not, this little filly had a one-of-a-kind spirit--and to admit something like that was no small thing for the Angeni of Allure. He usually had a hard time seeing through the surface, to the beauty beneath, but with this filly... well, something in her just made it easier.
"Um... thank you?" he hesitantly murmured, not sure if he should thank her or not for her comment. He knew he was the best--everyone knew that. But it sounded different when she said it, like it mattered more than all the individuals that had ever called him beautiful together. That fact that she liked him at all was surprising to him, but he admitted that he was fond of her also. He couldn't hide it, not any more.
He flinched a bit as she snuggled down next to him, saying, "Woah, wait--" But she was already down, already leaning against him. The heat from her tiny body was surprisingly comforting in the late winter chill. He wasn't used to closeness like this, at least the closeness that came from gentle admiration, and not lust. He wanted to move away--but her eyes captivated him, and he found himself rooted to the spot. Ah well. He didn't feel like getting up anyway.
"Eh... no, I have plenty. You've done well," he assured her, shifting his weight a bit to allow her to more comfortably lean against his side. He watched her as she lay there, knowing that she was tired. That was one thing about foals--they could be as hyper as a rabbit one moment, then as sleepy as an owl the next. They were so unpredictable. SHE was unpredictable.
And perhaps she also made him do things that he had never predicted himself to do.
He sighed in resignation, stretching a colorful wing over her back. "There. You might as well stay warm. But you must promise me that you'll find your way back home soon--I wouldn't want your parents to worry about you. The forest can be a dangerous place." Yes, he thought. Dangerous because of ones like me... He suddenly felt, oh, what was that word? Guilty? Yes, he felt terribly guilty. Here she was, trusting him like he was kind and honest and honorable, when really, he was none of those things. Was her kindness all for naught? No. No, it wouldn't be. He'd change himself, do things a little differently. Well, maybe. Maybe not. But he had time to think it over. If he could face himself, that was.
His eyes lit up, waking him from his trance. "Oh! I never learned your name, little one. Be it as it may, you should at least know mine. I am Devicius." He smiled at her, kindly, then nuzzled the top of her head--a caring gesture, something that was truly from the bottom of his heart... the heart that she had warmed.

Oh goodness, she had gotten so comfortable and had been so busy trying to take care of her friend that she forgot that her mother would be waking soon. Oh no! She must go, she must go! She didn't want to get in trouble.
She quickly rolled and gathered her feet beneath her so that she could stand up. "I'm glad we're friends, Dev....Devici..ious." She had trouble saying his name. "But I have to go, my mom will be up soon!"
She turned to started to run the path of which she had come, then she remembered he had inquired of her name. She stopped and spun on her hind hooves.
"Io! I'm Io!" She beamed one last smile at him then turned, her small body disappearing into the bushes.

Devicius was a little surprised at her sudden actions, but he took it in stride, only watching her thoughtfully as she spun away--like he had said: UNPREDICTABLE.
But he didn't mind. He had enjoyed his time with her, believe it or not. He grinned as she mentioned her parents. Good thing he had brought them up, for she seemed to be quite forgetful.
"Friends..." He murmured, letting the word settle in his mind like a leaf on water. He chuckled as she spun away. Damn, could she run fast for those tiny legs.
Then his heart leapt as she told him her name. He thought that she hadn't heard him, like before, but she did! And now he knew... Io. The word vibrated in his mind, alive, free, spirited... wild. Just like her.
"Yes. Yes, I believe that I am also glad." He smiled, watching her disappear. And in his heart, he looked forward to only one thing--to when they would meet again.
