Well, most women tear to some extent while having a baby; the skin only stretches so much before it reaches its breaking point. Sometimes in order to save time they'll actually do a cut vs. letting you tear naturally, an episiotome.
With me, only being 7 pounds 2 oz, but trying to come out facing the wrong way, I had to be forceps-assisted. Which meant a 4th degree episiotome for my mother--a cut all the way from her v****a back through the rectal MUSCLE. The result was 300 stitches and months of recovery because episiotomes weaken the pelvic floor muscles more then tears do.
A 4th degree tear would have healed more quickly and never touched any muscle. The skin would have tore that far back, but it would have done less damage overall. Just some perspective on tearing. I'd rather tear any day then have to be cut if I can help it.
xd And before I give you all nightmares, episiotomes aren't as common-practice anymore as they were back in the 80's when we old fogeys were born. Largely because they don't resort to forceps as often.

If I'd tell you you won't believe me.But this is the truth:
When I was born my parents said that I wieghed actually 2-3 and a half pounds.I was very lightwieght and I was so small that an adult can carry me with one hand. But there was a cause to that though, the doctors said I may not survive while my mother was gving birth...but here I am now. whee

My boyfriend was smaller than any of you, I think, when he was born, but he was also THREE months premie (in 1986, too! Damn, he and his twin were LUCKY). Apparently, he fit on his father's hand when he was born.
But... DAMN, that sounds painful... was it by C-section? The article didn't say, I think... I couldn't do that vaginally. No frigging way!
Dang....

D;;;;; Christ. That makes me cringe. I read that the largest baby aver delivered was 22 pounds. I'm not sure if that was C-Section or not. I sure hope so.
