You've created your own prison out of an illusion of hell. It isn't real. Accept the fear as something you're experiencing and move past it. Easier said than done, I know. Try chanting and meditation, that always helps me. 3nodding

I dont think you should fear the hells. I read of a monk who wanted to be reborn into the hell dimensions so that he could take on the suffering of those in it.

Budda once reflecting of his past lives, told how he started his spiritual journey to enlightment in a hell dimension. (I think he was a bull)

If you take it literaly, their just other world or dimensions that are currently not as well of as we are. It be like being reborn in the heart of a poor african nation, only on a larger scale. It seems so bad in comparison to here. Like wise people in hevenly dimensions/worlds must look at this world and think were pretty helish.

Of course this is a pretty literal fram of thought. Not impossible but still pretty out their.

Best just to go with the living hell allready described on this thread. Which are differ from a more christian view in that its not permanet. If you lack attachments hell really isint hell. Its just life. Its the just the way it is. Eventualy you will leave hell. In christianity your stuck their forever, lacking gods love, and will suffer forever without hope of ever ending it.

what exactly is the buddhist idea of hell? and are there like multiple hells
Yep. Here you go:

Buddhanet's Rebirth article
Let us look at each of these realms individually and starting from the realm at the bottom, let us look at the realm of the hell beings (Niraya). There are various hells in Buddhism, and they are principally eight hot hells and eight cold hells. In the hells, beings suffer incalculable and inexpressible pain. It is said that the suffering experienced as a result of being pierced by three hundred spears in a single day in this life is only a minute fraction of the suffering experienced in hell. The cause of rebirth in hell is continuous, habitual violent actions - habitual killing, cruelty and so forth, actions that are borne of ill-will. Beings born in the hells suffer the pain of hell until their unwholesome karma is exhausted. This is important because we must note that in Buddhism no one suffers eternal damnation. When their unwholesome karma is exhausted, beings in hell are reborn in a more fortunate realm of existence.

Amusingly enough, that's generally the line of thought I tend to take on when the more fundamental Christians challenge my rather atheistic tendencies.

If it turns out that they were right, then I suppose we really ought to be going there. Even devils are apart of creation, after all.
And there's just something hypothetically entertaining in the thought of Satan realizing they're God...and have been all along. Perhaps then, we'd see truly enlightened existence. whee
