The moment she called out the last number, she bounded forward, but not nearly as far as the boy did initially. In fact, her pace to start was not nearly all that fast. It was faster than a "warm up" pace, but not the same thing as full out sprinting.

And sadly, at this pace, she was only slightly behind the boy at worst. As her feet galloped on the ground, she leaned into one side so she would not literally be running into the boy when she finally sped up a bit more. Coincidentally, as she ran at this pace, she caught sight of her dad for a brief moment and didn't hesitate in calling out "HEY DAD!"

She had a pretty big grin on her lips when she literally side-swiped her father. The man couldn't help but stand there a bit dumbfounded that his daughter had yet again found some sort of way to cause a bit of a ruckus. While his eyes were on her, she began to pick up pace. The girl began to gain on Ladon, each long stride working to her advantage for the moment.

He’d be right. For such a short track, a start wasn’t good enough. While he managed to push out ahead of Ellie, her long strides were making her quick to gain what little advantage he managed to start off with. Tall and long legged, her long steps took twice of his with each step, and her energy was enough to keep her going. Ladon’s talent for endurance and ability for being fast were countered by Ellie’s energy and swift movements. If this had been a test, Ellie would have been already signed up for as a candidate for the track team with the crisp title of sprinter, while Ladon was close to loosing his title for long-distance runner.

All he could do now was not loose spirit and hope she would either burn her energy quickly or that his endless training and knowledge about running would pay off in some way. It was all up in the air as to who would win really, as even one second a victor or loser could be decided. He just hoped that time and skill was on his side.

You can do this. While he was far more serious about the race, he could hear Ellie call out to her father, who pressed back to allow them space. For the look of determination he had seconds ago, he broke into a grin and wanted to laugh. Ellie’s father probably had to wonder what his daughter was doing, and he wondered if the girl was prone to starting races with complete strangers from school. If so, it would explain the fact that she was gaining on him.

For any sort of casual observer, it would have been a sight, seeing a dark-haired and a blonde blur streaking past through the pathway. In fact, a couple people were nearly mowed down by these two reckless teenagers. Ellie did her best to maneuver around the innocent bystanders, occasionally offering a simple "Sorry!" as she continued to speed by. She wasn't exactly nimble on her feet, and after one particular elderly lady, she somewhat stumbled in step, losing a bit of her distance. However, she quickly recovered, and with nothing more in mind than the simple "Do your best," she upped her efforts.

It wasn't long before she was side-by-side with the kid. She kept her golden eyes facing forward, not wanting to run over any little old lady. However, she couldn't help but comment, her voice panting out vaguely since she was still running "Yer not bad, kiddo. Maybe you'll be gettin' my money afterall!"

Unknown to both of the teenagers, Mr. Spectre had decided to follow the two, apologizing profusely to all the near-victims of this momentary lapse in sanity on his daughter's part. However, the man was smiling in a fashion that almost mirrored his daughter's grin when he wasn't apologizing.

It was a real test to run on such a unpredictable track. It almost felt like a police training course with small children and the elderly popping out of no w here to startle him, but instead of shooting them away, he had to side step and turn about, brushing against them and hoping he didn’t knock anyone over (or more realistically, get knocked over). It was good that a small frame meant he was pretty good at dodging, but even that meant he wasn’t really running a straight ine and his pace was affected. Even so, Ellie was facing the same hardships and he almost cringed when she nearly mowed over an lady who looked as if she had one foot in the grave already. The sight of two kids running around in what was usually seen as a boring and slow-moving flea market caused a few people to step back in alarm and dive for cover under unvarnished armories and pictures.

“This isn’t a playground!” He heard one man yell from behind a table full of vases and assorted porcelain. The table rattled and caused a few vinage bottles to chime as Ladon brushed the corner and was glad that the entire thing didn’t topple over. THAT would have really caused some damage. He half expected his next obstacle to be a fruit cart.

Keeping pace, he managed to get a slight advantage. A few steps ahead, he could see the ending point was in sight. They were nearly there, but Ellie was close behind. If he kept going at this pace, he’d win, but if Ellie managed to leap out, the game would be over. Ladon was right. In the end, the final decision came down to the last seconds.

The finish line was ahead. Or at least, the target destination, since there was no real "finish line" in front of the two teens. Ellie didn't really have a super imagination for things like this. There would be no imaginary finish line ribbon she'd run into.

It was the last leg of the race. Even the blonde knew that you put your all into the home stretch. With such a vague thought flickering in and out of her thoughts, she soon enough pushed herself to running as fast as she could. Her feet began to drum against the ground, her long strides hitting the ground faster than any of her previous efforts.

For Ellie, it was no longer a race against Ladon in reality. She wasn't really paying attention to where he was at anymore. It was about doing her best. So the girl didn't notice as she managed to pull ahead of Ladon at the last minute and reach the final destination split seconds before the boy. The moment she was where she should be, she leaned over, hands firmly against her thighs as she panted out slightly.

"Wow, what a rush!" she managed to puff out between pants.

His entire focus was on his breathing, his pace, and the finial push to get to the finish line, but it wasn’t a deep enough concentration to not notice the blur advancing to his left. Despite poor starts and avoiding collisions, Ellie had pulled up and passed the other runner. No amount of pushing could counter the fact she was advancing, and while he saw her advance, he wasn’t about to just stop. It wasn’t over till it was over, and in a race, even what looked like a sure win could wind up having someone get a cramp, a sprain, or even trip. While he didn’t hope for any of these, as all three were the worst enemies of every runner, he wasn’t really rooting for Ellie either.

In the end, she passed and he wound up finishing behind her. Slowly down, he panted, leaning down to set his hands on his knees as he breathed out and caught his breath for a moment. The winter air was thin and his lungs strung, but he was warm from running and had a tight pain in his chest that always made him feel as if he done something worthwhile.

“Yeah…rush.” He breathed out, standing up. What came down to a race for 5 bucks or gloating rights wound up being his loss. Ellie managed to beat him, and he not only felt hurt in that all his training didn’t really measure up, but that he felt he didn’t do his own team back at school justice. What could he say to them when a random student from class just up and beat him? It wasn’t that he hadn’t lost a race before. He lost plenty, but they had always been runners. Students he could rationalize had training and worked hard to get where they were. Having Ellie come around and win without any training or track experience really stomped down on his spirit.

“Well….you won. Gloat away.” One could only hope she didn’t have a victory dance.

She huffed in some air into her lungs and exhaled harshly before eventually standing herself up straight again. Ellie was still huffing and puffing, but at least the sudden stress on her lungs seemed to have passed, her chest no longer burning from oxygen deprivation. Her eyes drifted for a moment, looking over the sea of cars in the parking lot before shifting to face the boy. Wow, he looked wiped!

"Oh? I won?" She glanced up to the sky for a moment, as if trying to recall the moment, but she honestly couldn't remember paying attention at that point. There would thankfully be no victory dance. One, Ellie did not dance. That's what jocks did, and she was no jock. And two, she felt absolutely no reason to do something so stupid, especially when the victory hadn't been something very memorable.

Instead, she allow her grin to find its proper place on her face again and leaned in towards the boy. "Good effort, kid!" She pushed her hand forward, offering a fist for a quick bump against his (if he knew what a fist bump was). Ellie was not taking advantage of her bragging rights. At least, not yet.

Her eyes momentarily lifted from Ladon's face and managed to catch a glance of her father approaching, apologizing to the last few casualties along their reckless pathway. Her dad would announce himself soon enough, but for now, she was tending to Ladon, making certain he wasn't going to be a sore sport about the whole thing.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 31, 2010 7:12 am

It was probably a good thing he knew what a fist bump was. Guys often did it, but he never saw it done with a girl, and so he expected a handshake for good effort instead. This left a fist bumping a open hand that curled in at the last moment. (Handshake Fail. Fist Bump Fail. All that was left was a high five to screw up and he'd be set.)

Good effort. While he tried his best, he didn’t feel right in just letting this one victory go.

“Rematch.” It came to him quickly as he breathed in and out, knowing he should probably walk around to lower his heart rate, but he wasn’t about to go just yet. Even as Ellie’s father was coming towards them, no doubt to both put her and him by extension in their place, he wanted to get a second opportunity.

“After school, on the track. That way we don’t have any obstacles.” Still, he could see the same results happening again. He wanted time to train and improve. “How about 2 weeks from now?” It wasn’t going to do much improvement, but if he said a month, Ellie would probably forget the set meeting of some random kid she met. 2 weeks sounded about as far as he could push it, but he was going to aim high. If he could beat Ellie, he’d feel he had made progress. If he didn’t, the girl was pretty much stuck with rematches for the rest of her high school life until he got better or was content enough with a tie.

Fail. The boy had done it.

At the mention of the rematch, she lifted up her arms and tucked her hands behind her head so she looked as she had the moment Ladon had first seen her today. She looked as if she was thinking quickly, wanting to get everything set up before her dad was immediately next to her.

"Rematch, but my terms. No set date, I'll hit ya up when I'm bored. Otherwise, it's no fun fer me!" She paused long enough to let a grin flash in his direction.

"And there won't be any money involved. Jus' simple braggin' rights."

This race had simply been meant to relieve her boredom. Spur of the moment things were much more fun than planning things out and preparing like normal. It wasn't exactly like the tomboy had something to prove with racing some random short kid.

Before Ladon had any chance to disagree with Ellie's terms, the blonde man with the small (douche) goatee walked up next to his daughter. He was just a couple inches taller than her. "I see that you couldn't handle coming here without doing something reckless, Ellie."

It might have sounded like a scold, but the man just had an amused smile on his face. Thank goodness she came to the flea market with her Dad only. Her mom would be up in her face about the whole ordeal.

The girl nodded her head. "Yeah, guess y'can say that, Dad! Ladon Shepard, this is my dad. Dad, this is Ladon Shepard. He goes to school with me." At least she had manners enough to introduce the two.

There was a hint of surprise in the man's eyes, but all the same, he reached out a hand for a handshake. "Nice to meet you, Ladon!"
PostPosted: Sun Jan 31, 2010 1:58 pm

Object Ladon would have if Ellie’s father hadn’t come into the scene. He already spun around and was close to sputtering to get a set date, but it seemed he wouldn’t get that luxury with Ellie being the way she was. It put him on edge, and now he wondered if she would spring a rematch on him at any moment. Then again, it wasn’t a bad thing either. She might forget and remember months from now, and by then he would have improved. As long as there was the hope for another match, he could at least deal with it enough that there was hope to claim a win in the future. With at least that much, he closed his mouth, straightening himself out as he turned to address Ellie’s father, but narrowing his eyes to give the girl a sideways glance. Next time we race, Ellie Spectre, I’ll win. Just you wait and see.

Interrupted from his mental declaration, he reached out his hand to accept the handshake before he even had time to consider that this could be a very BAD idea. If Ellie had the grip that nearly broke his fingers, he didn’t even want to think what damage her father might do. It was too late though as his hand had already went up. Goodbye hand. You served me well.

“A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Spectre.” Ellie’s father seemed to be in a good humor and by the way his daughter acted, had probably a strong sense of patience. He was also very tall, and the boy had to turn his hand upwards so that they could have a proper handshake.

More pleasant than he had first been with Ellie, Ladon gave a soft smile and looked over to the girl. "You're daughter is very fast. She'd be really good if she went on the track team." He instantly regretted saying it, and he felt his stomach tighten. While it might improve their team, it still felt exclusive to him, and he didn't want to bring more people that could potentially replace him. It was the last thing he wanted.

Mr. Spectre's handshake was nothing like his daughter's. His was professional and well practiced, remaining firm, but nothing that would cripple a person's fingers for life. When you were in the used car sales business, you had to make certain you didn't handicap your clients with your handshake. It was the common place "shake, one, two, release the hand" sort of shake.

The mention of his daughter's speed did not seem to come across as a surprise to anyone. The man practically beamed at the statement and turned to his daughter, placing a hand on the girl's shoulder, as if claiming her as his trophy. "I keep telling her to try out for a sports team, but she's got her mind set already! If there was a sport she'd excel at, it would probably be Soccer though."

Despite being a "trophy daughter," the girl interjected with a big grin. "If I took up a sport, then I'd have less time t'work on my car after school. Not worth it!"

Mr. Spectre sighed before ruffling the girl's hair. "She's such a little scamp!" There was a pause so he could beam again before he turned to the short boy, eyes needing to drift down lower than he usually had to in order to see Ladon's green eyes. "So, should I take it that you're on the track team?"

Remember how Ellie had not been taking advantage of her bragging rights? Finding it to be an appropriate time now, she grinned and offered a simple "I whooped his a** good!" Ellie was modest, really.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 31, 2010 2:48 pm

There was something to be said about a good handshake, he agreed, and he was instantly grateful to get his hand back in the same condition he had a few seconds ago. Whoever Ellie was getting her lessons, she needed to take a page out of her father’s book instead. Mr. Spectre seemed to be a typical father proud of his child’s accomplishments, and hoping she would excel in something that he could show off and take claim too. And like most children, Ellie had her own interests in mind. To each their own, he guessed, though he’d rather be outside than in a dank garage with oil and car fumes.

It didn’t take long for Ellie to break into her gloating, and she went straight for it without softening any of the edges. To the point, he frowned at the gloating despite being before Mr. Spectre. It put him in a situation where he couldn’t yell at her, and he instead stayed quite. Humble pie had a very bitter flavor. He didn't much care for the taste.

“Yes, I’m on the track team.” He continued, slowly, and with restraint to not say anything else. Oh, Mr. Spectre. What a lovely daughter you have. A gift to the world. You should enroll her in Charm school. She could teach the class. So very modest and well-behaved, and a laugh like a pair of robins! The inner commentary nearly made him laugh, but he kept his cool. Saying something like that might make a proud father very angry.

“She’s got very strong legs. I’m not surprised she could keep up with me. I’d like to see how well she would do on an actual track though. Our track was more of an obstacle course than anything else.” The way he spoke of her was in the same way someone might comment on a strong horse.

He looked back to her, smiling sweetly. “You were very lucky.”

The girl's father probably should have said something about being polite. Probably. However, Mr. Spectre did not even attempt to reprimand his daughter. That was his wife's job. He wasn't about to become the "bad guy." He shot his daughter a look, but it wasn't anything more than acknowledging the fact he heard what she had said. After the look, he returned his attention to the boy, his eyes once again having to drop down to his. "What's your specialty? Are you a long distance runner or a sprinter? I know Ellie's good at a sprint when she picks up her speed."

Was this an appropriate time to interject again? Probably not, but the blonde girl decided to once again. "Dad's probably glad I won, since if I lost, then I woulda lost five dollars."

Three. Two. One...

"Wait, you had money wagered on that spectacle?!" If there was one thing that Mr. Spectre loved more than his family, it was money. And the possibility of losing money loomed around in his head, causing his expression to look as if he was about to have a heart attack.

"Take a chill pill. I won, I didn't lose any money, the end." The girl was grinning in a manner that almost looked as if she knew she was going to ruffle her father's feathers with the mention of the wager.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 31, 2010 7:22 pm

Well, there went good parenting right out the window. If that wasn’t enough, the man really got upset over 5 dollars. Now Ladon didn’t have a job, but 5 dollars didn’t seem enough to be upset over, especially if it was coming from his daughter’s pocket. Then again, it could be that Ellie’s pocket by extension was his father’s pocket, but really? He would have done a better job if he had be upset over gambling than cash, and Ladon was set on the fact that the family had a weird set of priorities which resulted in Ellie being a odd person too. Still, they seemed harmless enough, aside from Ellie’s crude nature and rough manhandling.

If anything, it served a purpose in being nice to an adult in that he made a cover of being a ‘nice, wholesome, boy’ to Mr. Spectre. Adults had a way of talking to each other after all.

“I’m a sprinter, though I’m starting to be trained in long distance events.” More like he was being moved to long-distance running because it, as his coach said, ‘better suited his talents’ than sprinting did. Ladon was starting to care for his coaches opinions less and less these days.

Now that he was done running and his heart rate was slowing down, being jacketless was doing him no good. He held his arms for a moment as he tried to talk, but looked out to where he left his coat and his purchase. Being thin and small, he didn’t retain body heat very well.

"Don't worry. It was more for gloating rights than money." He assured her father, though he would have taken both if he had won. It really was getting under his skin, but he was cooling down both physically and mentally, at least for now. He was still debating if he'd get Ellie back somehow, but if he was to settle any score, it would have to be in another race. Any other way wouldn't satisfy him.

There was a frown that had managed to sneak onto Mr. Spectre's lips. Even though his daughter had just told him to "take a chill pill," it was not something very easy for him to just accept.

Ellie, being relatively wise with how to deal with her own parents, pulled away from her father for a moment and approached the shorter boy, patting a hand on his shoulder before attempting to sneak in a mild elbow nudge to signal for him to follow her lead. The message might have gotten lost in translation, but she was trying at least.

"Yeah, Shepard's right, Dad! Mostly 'bout th'braggin' rights. If it's any consolation though, I won five dollars. He paid me right before y'got 'ere!"

This was a lie. However, the girl stated it so plainly, it could be assumed it was a fact. It was not a fact, but her father didn't need to know that.

Her father seemed to think her words over, and began to perk up slightly at the notion that his daughter had somehow managed to profit out of this whole situation. He glanced back to the boy and offered in apology a "Sorry that my kid conned you outta some money, Ladon." However, there was just something about the way Mr. Spectre was smiling that read he was proud of his daughter for earning some extra money.
