"You can hide your jealousy better you know, instead of making up a rule. I've brought Song in here many times without complaint because she does not leave my side. I've done enough chores in here to know."
Yulu wasn't bluffing either, her fact coming from the knowledge that the first day she came in with Song she was allowed to let her stay. Most of the people didn't even glance up and care what she was doing, actually enjoying watching the little flitt interact with different things Yulu performed. A few people had even asked if they could give her things, since apparently a Gold was cause for celebration.
"Besides, I'm not the only one in here with one. L'pin has Hinalle with him too and these two have been here the whole time. She was flying around when we first entered in though they've had a nap since then."
At the mention of her name a small Green flitt dashed up into the air, eyes whirling a little red before they settled to a calm blue. She hissed at L'pin as he reached his hand over in her direction, though a warble from Song made her calm down.

Cass frowned more at the jab, but said nothing, dislike for Yulu growing in her breast. It wasn't a made up rule, they weren't supposed to bring pets in the kitchen, at least regular kitchen staff weren't. It wasn't sanitary. Apparently weyrlings, and candidates who threatened to break peoples faces, were an exception though. It just wasn't fair! Why did someone as horrible as Yulu get to have one of the much coveted golden flits while hard working girls like Cass who spent all day in the kitchens feeding everyone were over looked! The sudden appearance of the green as it leaped into the air and hissed made her jump. Her hand slipped and she gashed the palm of her hand with her knife. "Ah!" she cried, dropping the now bloody potato to the floor and staring at her palm in horror as blood trickled forth. Her face was extremely pale as she fumbled for something to staunch the bleeding, feeling distinctly ill as she did so. Seeing other people's blood, or even the blood of animals never phased her a bit, but when it was her own red stuff oozing out of a cut and over the edge of her blade, Cass nearly felt like throwing up. As it was, her hands were shaking.

Hinalle hissed loudly at the girl's cry of pain before she blinked between, nearly taking part of L'pin's head with her. She'd been ready to land and calm down before the noise had happened, and L'pin reached up to rub a sore spot on his skull where her little claws had made contact.
Yulu, for her part, merely reached over with her hands and pressed down against the wound. She didn't even flinch away from the fact she was getting blood on her own hands, the bandages that wrapped her fingers acting like mini-sponges to absorb the hot mess. The look on her face had changed from it's usual scowl to one of disinterest, as though her reaching over to stop the bleeding was almost as natural a motion as anything possible. She allowed her body to move slightly closer to Cass, enough that she now had both hands free, and she took the one not on the open palm and used it to squeeze down on the younger girl's wrist.
"Stop panicking like a wherry and hold still. L'pin I need some water and a clean cloth, and maybe a needle if you can find one. If not I'm sure they have something nearby we can use to fix this, should the wound be actually deep enough."
Far be it from Yulu to care that she actually was not allowed to treat people without a journeyman present, though her mind told her fixing simple things like cuts and scrapes could hardly count as anything life threatening. Her father would chide her if she turned away.

"I can...i can handle it." Cass said a little faintly as Yulu worked to staunch the bleeding. She didn't want to feel like she owed her something just because she stopped the bleeding. After all, it was partially her fault it even happened. This was why they weren't supposed to have flits in the kitchen. "Its not that deep." she insisted as she swallowed back on her nausea. She'd seen a lot of knife cuts from careless cooks in her time in the kitchens, and she knew this one wasn't all that bad. It was relatively shallow. Granted, looking close enough to determine that almost made her faint. She tried weakly to pull her hand from Yulu's, Her birth mother could fix it up for her, or one of the other cooks, or she could go see the healer. She didn't need help from this person. Her hands were still trembling though and she found she didn't have much strength to go anywhere at all, and so she finally stopped fighting and stared at her feet where they dangled above the floor. She was small for her 16 years, barely over five feet tall, so her feet tended to dangle in most seats she sat in.

"Just shut up and hold still or I'll open your wound and pour hot oil into it. The more you squirm the harder I'll squeeze too, so if you want this over with quickly you had best learn to stay still and silent."
Yulu's tone was flat as she kept the pressure even, only moving her fingers once L'pin came to her side with the water and cloth she had asked for. She dipped an end of the cloth in the water and rubbed away at what blood she'd managed to get smeared, careful not to pull on the little clumps there were trying to act as a seal against further bleeding. For the most part the cut was average and not very deep, Cass having gotten pretty lucky to miss slicing most of her palm. Still, further tending was needed and not by the people in the kitchen. She needed healer aid.
"Looks like a decent cut, though it's not too deep and shouldn't prevent you from being able to move your hand in the future. You will need to go to the infirmary and see the Journeyman healer there in order to get it stitched up, so I would recommend going sooner than later. If a wound is allowed to harden improperly there is a chance for infection, and I'm certain since you're here in the kitchens such a thing would be a problem."
L'pin was pretty impressed with how well Yulu was addressing the situation, his mind sometimes forgetting that she was indeed a Healer almost ready to walk the tables and move a rank. It was only when she showed proper and quick response time to incidents like this that he remembered, and he smiled fondly at the young woman.
"L'pin, stop smirking or I'll give you a shiner you won't forget."

Cass nodded mutely at Yulu's harsh but sensible words, still in shock so it didn't occur to her to object to being bossed around. Her weakness was starting to wear off, though, and so she took the cloth and pressed it to her palm of her own accord and slipped off the stool. She turned and looked around the kitchen, spotted someone she apparently knew, and asked them to keep an eye on her bread while she went to the infirmary. Cooperation was duly given and she was ushered away from the heat of the ovens. On her way out the door Cass paused by Yulu and L'pin "Sorry about the mess." she said in a quieter tone than she normally used. She then turned and continued out of the kitchen, determinedly making her way towards the infirmary. She was a proud girl, and refused to ask for help as she made her way up the stairs from the lower caverns. She was forced to pause halfway up, though, when she started feeling woozy, waiting for it to pass before she continued on. Stupid knives. Stupid potatoes. Stupid stupid firelizards with all their hissing and flying about making people cut themselves...

"You might want to follow her and actually make sure she gets there. She looks like the type who'd trip over her own feet or lose her own head were it not attached to her neck."
Yulu didn't acknowledge the thanks that Cass spat out as she left, instead moving to peel the blood wraps off her fingers. It was unsanitary to leave them on, even though many of the blood-based diseases were gone, and Yulu found herself tucking them into the side of her boot to be washed later. Her red fingers flexed a bit as she looked them over, debating washing them before getting back to work.
"Are you sure? You're the one she thanked."
"And you're the one she's more interested in speaking with. Just go and get out of my hair, or else I'll tell others that you're abusing your non-powers by making Candidates help you."
Yulu moved to stand up, Song making a small mewl of protest before trying to climb to Yulu's shoulders, and she made her way towards the nearest sink. Her conversation was over, and L'pin smiled as he bid her farewell and went out into the hallways after the smaller girl.
"Cass? Cass, wait up!"

Cass paused at the top of the stairs and looked back, noticing L'pin making his way up them towards here. "Something wrong?" she asked when he had caught up to her, and she continued towards the infirmary, taking deep breaths, gradually getting over the feeling of nausea now that she wasn't looking directly at her damaged hand. Hopefully Yulu was right in that usage of the member wouldn't be hampered by the cut. From what she'd seen, she didn't think it would be either but...well, things happened all the time that one didn't expect. She smiled, a little weakly, up at the dragonrider, glad that he had come after her. She was too proud to ask for support, but having someone accompany her to the infirmary was nice. Well, assuming that was why he was here. she assumed though, why else would he have run after her except to escort her? "Does...does she know what she's talking about?" Cass asked after a moment of quiet on her part. She may dislike Yulu, but she had seemed to have a somewhat professional manner when she had cut herself, deftly staunching the bleeding and assessing the situation. Granted, her bedside manner sucked.

"I came to make sure you'd be okay getting there. You looked pretty pale after you got caught and saw all that blood, so I didn't want to come out later and find you collapsed somewhere. Just think of me tagging along with you as a way to keep the doctor's orders in tact."
L'pin did note the color of Cass's face was rather pale, and he frowned a little as he innerly debated actually offering his arm to aid her around. She seemed steady enough on her own feet as it were, so he would wait and see how things progressed.
"She? Oh, you mean Yulu? Yes, I'd trust whatever she says. She's a Senior Apprentice Healer, who was slated to walk the tables just before she came here. I'd like to say she knows a thing or two about cuts and scrapes, so if you ever need any medical help she's certainly someone you can go to."

"Thanks." she said with a smile, a bit of the color returning to her cheeks now as they walked along the corridor. She kept a slower pace than normal so she didn't start feeling ill again. "and I'm sorry for that." Cass said with a wince at her uselessness when it came to her own blood "Animal blood and even other peoples blood doesn't both me but...well, obviously you saw how I react when its my blood on the knife." She was a little surprised by the news that Yulu was a healer, nearly a journeywoman, though she made a face at the thought of actively seeking her out for help if she got hurt. All the same, she figured she'd be better off looking for the Weyr's healer. Yulu had probably only helped her because L'pin was there. She decided not to comment though. The dragonrider surely had his reasons for hanging around the other girl, but that didn't mean she wanted too. He seemed nice enough though, so she wouldn't say anything disparaging. Deciding to take the conversation away from gorey subjects while they walked, Cass ventured into a new line of conversation. "So, L'pin, what is your dragon's name?" she asked curiously as she glanced up at him.

L'pin's eyes grew bright the moment Cass started to speak of his dragon, though he was a bit surprised to find that she didn't already know. He thought he'd had something of a reputation, or rather his dragon did, but he was more than glad to share that information with her. Speaking about Shamth always made him giddy, like he was a Jr. Weyrling all over again.
"He's named Shamth, and is a Blue. I Impressed him was I was a little older than you, probably only by a Turn, and we've been together since then. I didn't know what it was like to be alive until that moment of Impression, nor did I know what it was like to have been so alone. Every day that we wake together is something new and wonderful, so many memories for me to make and share with him."
He could have gone on and on about how much Shamth was the most wonderful creature in the world, but he knew it wouldn't be right harping on to someone who was slated to possibly Impress within a month or so. Instead he decided to keep it simple, just chatty.
"He's got quite the personality too him though, not many people can handle him in large or small doses. The only ones to not have a problem so far would be Yulu, and her moth-"
He stopped himself quickly, silence filling the void.

Cass grinned at him, knowing she had picked a good topic. She didn't know many riders well enough to get into a conversation with them, but she knew that they loved their dragons more than anything else in the world, so surely they would like to talk about them too. His dragons name did sound a bit familiar though...something floating around on the grape vine she had no doubt heard at some point, some bit of gossip...she had a feeling that blue Shamth wasn't the friendliest dragon around, but then, not all dragons could be. Their personalities were just as varied as the humans they were bonded too. She was about to speak when he stumbled over his words, apparently not wanting to continue on the subject of Yulu's mother. "Ah-huh." She said, raising her eyebrow at him "I'll just pretend I didn't hear that then, shall I?" she asked, a little teasingly, but willing to drop it. Had he been talking about anyone else, she might have asked, but she didn't particularly like talking about Yulu anyways. She wouldn't stop him if he wanted to continue though. His voice was easy on the ears, and he had wonderful and engaging manners. "L'pin, rider of blue Shamth..." she let the title roll off her tongue, and then smiled at him again "That's quite catchy. Where were you from originally? You mentioned you were from a hold, earlier, I believe."

"I'm from High Telgar Hold, and so is Yulu. My whole family is still back there, making a living somehow, but I can't ever imagine going back and helping out. I worked my childhood hauling firestone, and now that I'm a rider. . . I still haul firestone. Not much has changed there except for the fact that I'm constantly being loved and adored no matter what I do. That. . . and the fact I have firelizards now. I certainly didn't have them when I lived at the Hold."
L'pin thought of Hinalle and tried to will her to where he was, pretty sure that she had returned to his weyr and was fussing unhappily at the sleeping Rinel. As soon as he thought of her, picturing her pretty colors and her charming nature, she appeared from between over his head with the same style of hiss that she had used when departing. She didn't come near him, she hated his touch, but she hovered close enough to be seen better.
"I do believe you may remember Hinalle. Sorry for the trouble she's caused you."

So, they were from the same hold? And he knew Yulu's mother? They must be related in some fashion then, but he didn't want people to know...not that she could blame him, who would want to be related to her? Though she didn't think he felt the same way. Still, very curious. Cass couldn't help but laugh when he realized he had the same duties he'd always had. Not much of a change there! She brought up her hand to cover her mirth, but winced when she realized she had tried to do so with her injured hand, making pain shoot through the limb. That quelled her amusement some, but she still managed a smile up at him "Well, I'm sure Shamth makes it worth all the effort, even if you are doing the same thing here as you were at your old hold. Being adored for everything thing you do has got to be a major bonus." she mused "Having firelizards must be nice too...I've always liked them." she said with a wistful sigh "Lowly weyrbrats and kitchen workers are awfully low on the list of priorities when it comes to eggs being given away." she said, making an annoyed face at this injustice. She worked hard every day, and so did many others! Shouldn't that be rewarded? She blinked and looked up as the now familiar green flit appeared over his head "Its not really her fault. I should have been more careful." she remarked, annoyed with her own carelessness. She simply hadn't been expecting something to jump out like that. Watching the flit for a moment longer, she couldn't help but comment "A bit touchy, isn't she?"

"Shamth does make it fun, I will admit that. Having someone constantly cheering you on no matter what you're doing makes the work go by faster and sometimes it doesn't feel like you're doing such hard work. He helps me whenever he can, usually be keeping others away so I don't talk the whole time."
It was just like L'pin to try and turn the fact that his dragon hated everyone and kept him isolated into a good thing, even daring to smile about it. There was no way he'd ever blame Shamth for his lonely nature, no matter what came his way.
"You know, I got Hinalle's egg from Yulu. Hinalle and Song are from the same clutch while my other Green, Rinel, was from one I found on the beach. Rinel is actually ready to clutch any day now, but seeing as she's a Green who knows where those eggs will get laid. She certainly won't remember and I probably won't find them in time to let them properly hatch, so we'll either have more wild flitts around or nothing at all."
Hinalle seemed to croon at the mention of Song's name, her affection for her clutchsib rather apparent, though she still made no efforts to get closer to L'pin. She was content to stay where she was and watch the pair move, her silent presence almost comforting.
"And yes, she is rather touchy, which is a shame. Her sister is so kind and gentle, a rather well mannered Gold after all. But I still wouldn't trade Hinalle in, she's got a spot in my heart all her own."
