Feylith was careful, guiding the weyrling. He wanted to give her things to practice, but not so much that she got into poor habits if she practiced without someone to correct her. Up, down, spinning and dancing. She may or may not have recognized the gentle repetition after a while. Mine, tell me if she does something wrong so we can correct it, he reminded Tethis privately. It is hard to see behind me sometimes.
"Malkai would make a good Weyrwoman." she agreed. "She comes across as more mature than Iva." she nodded. "And I've never had anyone come to take me away for saying something inflammatory. Not yet, anyways. Here's to keeping that up." her voice was dry. The sound of Jasrai's neck cracking almost made her jump, and she glanced over at her briefly.
Then she took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. "If I'dan became Weyrleader..." she chewed lightly on her lip. That could be problematic for her. She would become one of the Weyrleader's wing, but for how long? Getting switched out would be a strong demotion, and a blow for the women in the Weyr. Same if Kaya's wingleader did so. "I would need to worry much more about how I and Feylith came across to people. It would be thin ice not only for myself, but for other female riders." Had any other women ever been promoted to the Weyrleader's wing? How long had they stayed?
She would need to talk to the Weyrsinger, see what he knew.

Feylith may have been being careful, but Roseth was throwing herself into the new things. She wanted to learn them quickly! That way she could show off for Jasrai and the others. She knew Kannaroth was working to become quick and light, and a part of her was irritated by that. Sure, Kanna would be able to last more than a third of a Fall, but Roseth just hated to be outdone in any area. The competition was not really appreciated. But knowing things that Kanna didn't know, maybe, would be good. She'd teach her smaller sister, too, if she asked nicely.
Are you watching me? Roseth called to Jasrai. Aren't I splendid?
Absolutely. Watch where you're going. Roseth had to backwing quickly to stop herself from running into the large blue who was showing her these interesting new things. Jasrai winced at the near-collision and turned her attention back to Tethis.
"I really wouldn't know. I've been fortunate enough not to have to deal with either one of them in person. I think I'd like it to stay that way, too, honestly. Figures of authority like that always make me nervous."
And they always had. It probably came from spending so much time with her grandfather, who resented authority figures and everything the represented. He said they were boring and lacked imagination, or even the capacity for imagination, and so they tried to stifle others' urges if they were even a little bit varied from the norm. He had always encouraged Jasrai to bend rules and see which ones could actually be broken without getting into trouble. Jasrai remembered and missed the feeling of knowing she'd done something society considered wrong and the world still hadn't come to an end. Maybe she should adopt some of her old habits again. It wasn't like they could do much worse to her.
"But, yes, let's hope they decide to keep up the tradition of not imprisoning people for having opinions. I can't imagine Roseth would take to it very well." Actually, she got a very unpleasant mental image of Roseth trying to break her out of a prison.
Jasrai could have guessed that much for herself. About what it would mean for other female riders. That was something she could hardly avoid thinking about. Not when it was shoved down her throat even when she tried not to think about it. Roseth's smugness and pleasure at her own accomplishment filtered through their bond and she reminded herself that there were good moments. They just tended to come when no one else was around to spoil them.
"Well. I imagine that's not too different from the way it is for you now, then. You and Kaya are the only two in the Weyr besides me, after all. So, really, everyone's already got their opinion. You could probably do whatever you wanted. It wouldn't change things much for the rest of us. Though it might get you booted from the wing." Jasrai would have loved to fly in the Weyrleader's wing, but she knew that was never going to happen, so maybe, if I'dan was the better wingleader, it would be better for her if his bronze didn't fly Kaveth. It was the sort of thing Y'kar would think of.

You aren't watching her, Mine. Feylith was accusing, having caught a glimpse of his having her attention on the other dragon's rider instead of on he and his pupil.
You're the teacher. She retorted to her beloved, glancing up to watch the two dragons twist and turn in the sky.
Mine!
Oh, fine.
Never mind, I'm coming down anyways. We'll see how she holds what she learned. Turning his mind-voice back to Roseth, he spoke to her as well. That'll be a good start for the first lesson. I'll give you a little bit at a time, and as I see you master one thing, I'll teach you the next. Bad habits were hard to unlearn. And with that, he dove for the ground.
Tethis' attention went back to Jasrai and she gave a wry smile, not speaking. The Weyrleader's wing really could be a good opportunity for any number of things. An opportunity that she could most certainly not afford to muss up. She looked away, obviously thoughtful, as Feylith landed and moved over to her, leaning down to nose at her gently. "Well," she said, glancing up at him and smiling, "We'll certainly find out." the blonde pushed to her feet. "I do, however, need to take my leave." she gave Jasrai a short nod.

Roseth might have pouted that he'd hardly given her anything, but she knew that he had given her enough. She would have new things to work on while Jasrai finished her extra workout. The next time she saw Feylith she would show him that she'd more than mastered these few bits he'd passed on to her. She would wait until then to show Kannaroth and Nellath her new skills. That way she'd always be a lesson ahead of them.
Instead of pouting, she circled and glided gradually lower. Diving looked like it was lots of fun, but she wasn't sure of herself. At least not to the point where she thought she could pull out of a dive before hitting the ground. It would hurt if she was forced to roll, or even if she just landed too hard. And it would be embarrassing. Better to drift down gracefully and make a good showing of it. Then everyone would be impressed by how delicately she landed.
As soon as Roseth's claws touched the ground Jasrai reminded her, Thank him. He didn't have to do that. It was nice.
Roseth rumbled. Sometimes she wondered if Jasrai didn't trust her to say these things without prompting. Wasn't she the most polite dragon anywhere? Of course she would thank Feylith. That had been fun. She'd been able to tell that even Jasrai had enjoyed it vicariously, and that was reason enough to thank Feylith. She knew Jasrai was unhappy a lot of the time, but there wasn't much she could do about it, she felt, and so she pretended there wasn't a problem.
Thank you, Feylith. That was lots of fun. The next time you see me, I'll be masterful. She flicked her tail and said to Jasrai, See? I was polite.
Jasrai climbed to her feet without her usual grace. She was honestly too stiff and sore to move very well, and she still had some more working out to do before she could go in. This period of inactivity had probably not been good for her in that respect, but talking to a non-hostile person had been worth it.
"It was nice to speak with you, all grumpiness aside. I hope you'll forgive me for that. And I do appreciate Feylith taking the time to teach Roseth a few maneuvers. She gets bored waiting for me to catch up."

My pleasure. And if you do well, I'll teach you more. That will make both of Ours happy, to watch us fly. Mine enjoyed the company of Yours. The blue nodded to Roseth before nosing again at his short, stocky rider.
Tethis checked Feylith's riding straps with a practiced eye one more time just to be safe. "It was nice to speak to you as well. I know I'm pretty bad at relating with other females sometimes, and I apologize for that. If you ever need someone to work out with, or when you and Roseth think she's ready for the next lesson, just let us know." She had enjoyed spending time with the other rider, even if she'd gotten the odd feeling at times that she was upsetting the other girl. "We'll both be happy to help the two of you out however we can, okay?" She remembered being a Weyrling and a young rider. It had been painful, sometimes. She had been very lucky to get in I'dan's wing- he knew just how to treat her to make her love and respect him as her leader. She'd never been very feminine.
"You don't have to do anything alone." And with that, she turned and pulled herself up onto Feylith. Homeward, sweetheart.
