Back on the shelf Having just finished tucking Orion in Bastion made his way down the hall towards his study. Toddlers might get to go to bed when the sun did but he was an adult and thus had a budget to balance, one of the few things he didn’t leave up to others, and emails to read from potentials clients. As he rubbed his hands over his face the man noted he was going to need a shave in the morning as well. An extra five minutes to add to his itinerary for the day. Bastion entered the study and noted first of all the Etch a Sketch that sat innocent on the top left corner of his desk. Upon approaching it he found no actual report from his examiner beside it but the young woman had cheekily written ‘clean’ on it. Bastion gave a small sigh of relief at that, whatever was up with the summons and the store it didn’t seem to be related to the toy which meant it was safe to give to Orion tomorrow. He picked up the old toy, smiling a little as he did so then glanced around the room for a better place to put it. The spot it had previously occupied would likely be occupied by a pile of faxed papers, a folder or perhaps even a bottle of scotch before the night was over. Bastion’s desk was rarely a good place for anything to try and stay for every long, even his work got shuffled around and placed all over if he was having a particularly trying or exciting day. In perhaps an ironic ending the dark haired man ended up putting the Etch a sketch on a shelf in the glass door cabinet he kept beside the window. Tilted at an angel to remain upright like a picture frame the red cased toy sat between an old snowglobe and a miniature cuckoo clock. It might not be as elegant as it’s companion but Bastion noted it had come to him under equally as unique circumstances as they had. Once the toy was safely stowed away Bastion turned back to his desk. Time to deal with something slightly more predictable and decidedly more productive.

A blank slate “Help,” Orion’s voice was soft but urgent, the young herald desiring assistance immediately. “In a minute.” Bastion replied, the dark haired man not looking up from his paperwork. He was currently hunched over his desk examining an old deed, a will and a diary that mentioned both. If he was correct the three of them would help him track down a man he needed to see about a particular golden statue. However the hand writing on everything was so small and obscure in some places he was double checking to make sure everything was as his source had suggested it was. Losing his place in the writing to help Orion would be less than optimal if he wanted to get this done before dinner. “Help please,” Bastion sighed “I will come rescue you from the maze in a few minutes.” It was Orion’s new game, use the strangely gotten but apparently harmless Etch a sketch to make a maze which he was then “ lost” in and have Bastion come rescue him. Rescue of course being Bastion trailing his finger through the maze till he got to the end. It was cute in a way and Orion seemed good at manipulating the toys nobs to make the mazes, he wasn’t going to make the Mona Lisa but they were better than Bastion’s own staircases, still it was getting old and Bastion needed to finish his work. “Why don’t you get one of the staff to rescue you?” Most of them found Orion to be cute and the winged boy generally seemed to be fond of them. “It’s bleeding,” Now his son’s voice became a more desperate and higher pitched whine. Bleeding! Bastion whipped his head to left, eyes going wide as he watched what colour there was on the Etch a Sketch leak out of it and puddle on the floor. The expensive Brazilian cherry hardwood floor! Of course as the colour seeped out of the toy and closer towards Orion Bastion left from his chair and towards the boy, no way in hell was he letting the kid get hurt by a ******** Etch a sketch. Unfortunately for Bastion Orion was on his feet and fleeing towards him in the blink of an eye. The small boy barreled his legs and in what bad become a common occurrence lately Bastion found himself falling forward, unable to regain his balance due to Orion still wrapped around his legs. Both ended up back on the floor, Orion crying softly and Bastion cursing at the throbbing in his cheek and nose. He was too old for this. Lifting his head Bastion blinked slowly as he regained his composure. Before him was not a red gray and black puddle of god knew what advancing on him to possible mutate and kill him but instead a small child, no bigger than Orion. A child who looked suspiciously like someone had been using her as an Etch a sketch. “No absolutely not,” the man muttered pulling himself to his feet and gently touching his tender nose. Not broken or bleeding but definitely bruised. “No Returns” Orion pointed out, the herald’s sobbing stopped as he too stared at the little girl that had come from the toy. Bastion’s eyes shifted between his son who seemed to be thankfully unharmed and the thus far silent and decidedly strange looking girl. His life seemed to be getting more and more complicated and there was always an item involved. “No returns.” Bastion echoed softly, resigned to the idea that his family had grown once again and that he’d need to change his advertising ad for a Nanny to include care for two children.

Meta replyCaught blank handed Carina was supposed to be napping, she’d been given a nice bubblebath been tucked into bed and told to sleep. The problem with this of course was that she wasn’t sleepy at all. Oh she’d tried to be sleepy, the little redhead had lain in bed and closed her eyes but nothing had happened. She’d drawn all over one hand till it was nearly black to wear herself out but that had done no good either. Carina had only tossed and turned in her little bed until she’d given up on trying to sleep and decided to go ask for maybe one more story? As fast as her little legs would carry her the mostly monochrome girl made her way out of her room and down the hall. The long soft carpeted corridor was wide enough to have the odd small table along it’s sides upon which sat vases of flowers, neither of which were for touching. Carina was also not to touch the pictures that hung higher up on the walls although she couldn’t reach them anyways except when she was on her daddy’s shoulders. There was a lot in the house that she and her brother weren’t allowed to touch because it was breakable and ‘spensive. Carina thought maybe they should get better stuff but no her daddy just said she and Orion could have special room full of stuff that was okay to touch. The toddler had accepted that though she still didn’t understand why you would want things you couldn’t touch to begin with. Or why finger smudges on the walls that she couldn’t even see were so bad. The pink eyed girl was soon distracted from her thoughts though as she passed by her Daddy’s study and peered in. It was empty and still except for the flashy screen thing on his computer. Carina pouted, that meant he was down stairs and Carina couldn’t get to him because she was very scared of falling down the stairs. Crossing her arms the little curio huffed and marched her way over to the big black plush computer chair. She frowned at it as if it was the furniture’s fault that her daddy wasn’t sitting in it. It was only when she looked between the chair and computer again that Carina got a idea. Squealing with excitement she reached up to twist her left forehead nob a little before clambering up onto the chair. Giggling Carina reached out to grasp the shiny wood like desk and pulled herself and the chair forward a bit. She had small arms compared to daddy and had to be closer to things to use them. Even if she wasn’t supposed to be using the computer because it was at the top of the list of things she wasn’t allowed to touch. Carina wanted a story though and her daddy was down the stairs so she could only use the flashy screen machine. She’d heard it talk once so of course in her young mind it could read her a story. Several minutes later Carina smashed her small pudgy hand into the keyboard prompting the computer itself to issue a high whine of admonishment. Carina didn’t care though because it wasn’t working she’d made the flashy screen stop but she couldn’t make the computer tell her a story, all it did was stay on the same thing and make little stars in a box. She didn’t have a story and she still wasn’t sleepy and … As Carina had drawn her hand back her eyed had widened upon noticing some of the letters on the keyboard were missing. Nervously she turned her hand up but found the missing letters nowhere to be seen, her palm containing only a happy face she’d drawn on it earlier. Carefully she reached out to pet the keyboard as if hoping this would make it feel bed and give it back it’s letters, instead it only seemed to wipe away more and parts of the keys. The little girl who’d only wanted a story was going to soon need a really good one to explain what had just happened.

Hands on education
" Draw the letter B" A cheery computerized voice commanded gently.
Carina held the thick black stylus in her her hand and brought it down carefully onto the screen of the tech-toy tablet. She envisioned the letter in her headed then drew a straight line to which she added two bumps on one side. There was as few seconds of waiting and then the tablet played a little victory song and fake digital confetti floated across the screen.
"Good job" the tech-toy praised "Are you ready for another letter?"
Carina grinned and nodded even though the special learning computer couldn't see it and then touched the tip of her stylus to the yes button. This was fun, was more fun than that boring colouring and putting the shapes into holes thing Orion was doing. The redheaded toddler bed she was even going to learn to read first and stuff too becuase she was having the most fun.
From where he sat at his desk Bastion occasionally looked up from his emails to watch Carina and Orion working on their first bit of real learning. Some might find it odd that he wasn't really helping them per say but Bastion felt supervision was enough. It wasn't that he didn't care of have time so much that he felt a little independence would do them good and that they could feel proud when they were able to show him what they'd learned on their own. Simple things like the basics of the alphabet and numbers 1-10 were something he felt any kid could handle with the right tools. Unsurprisingly Carina and Orion favored different ones.
Orion had coloured first filling the bubble like letter shapes in an almost nauseating rainbow of colours as he memorized them. Then the little herald had began to pick up small versions of the letters from a bucket and place them onto slots on an electronic board that reminded him of what each one was when it slid into place. It seemed his older child was more focused on the shape and feel of thing in his hands to learn the letters. Bastion wasn't sure what that meant he just hoped it didn't impede reading abilities later although he'd take a personal hand in teaching that if he hadn't found a suitable pre-school by then or a nanny who could act as a tutor.
Carina on the other hand seemed to take take a simple hand eye route close to the traditional way of teaching things. The tech- toy he had bought for her showed the girl each letter of the alphabet in groups of five, uppercase first, and had her trace it once or twice then it would go blank and ask her to draw one of the letters from that groups of five. Carina seemed to be enjoying herself with it and Bastion assumed she was either repeating the first lesson or had moved onto level 2 which was lower case letters. Either way the pink eyed girl was staying mostly still, having a lesson and not putting up a fight about it.
As his eyes flicked between his two children and then back at the screen of his computer Bastion smiled. Maybe when the lessons were done he'd let the kids have a little fun tonight after dinner and they could decorate some sort of baked with what they'd learned in icing.

Tea party terror
Carina frowned as she looked up at Bethy " This is sleepy tea" she accused, purplish pink eyes narrowing in suspicion at Bethy. The young Curio did not want sleepy tea she wanted her good tea party tea that you dipped cookies in. You couldn't put cookies in sleepy tea and Bethy knew that, how had her personal, okay not really, servant made such an error. In her irritation Carina began to doodle on left hand drawing little black boxes around her knuckles on her grey skinned hands. The curio didn't know why but changing her markings tended to help change her mood, still she was annoyed, her tea party was ruined becuase her cookies would be cold by the time new tea was made. For a toddler dressed in white t-shirt and pink overalls she struck quite the intimidating figure as she continued to frown at the sighing staff member.
"I want new tea and cookies." Manners was not yet her strong point and from what she had seen in her short life thus far Carina was allowed to be bossy becuase she was a people and not staff. She had to say thank you when she got what she wanted but she was allowed to be bossy.
The petite woman with pixie cut blonde hair sighed softly " Your nap time is in an hour and your father insisted you have chamomile to make sure you nap despite the sugar in the cookies."
Carina opened her mouth to object then closed it, she couldn't argue with her father's orders. "Oh," the word was a small sigh "okay then." It still wasn't fair becuase she couldn't dip her cookies now but at least it hadn't been a mistake. "M'sorry" she mumbled. Apologies weren't really the redheads strong suit yet either, still she felt bad for thinking mean thoughts about Bethy. On a normal day Bethy was her third favourite person after her father and her brother, sometimes her second favourite person of Orion was being annoying.
"Apology accepted now enjoy your tea, I need to get back to work." With soft words, a half bow and gentle smile Bethy left the room and left Carina alone to continue her tea party.
Feeling a bit better if still disappointed Carina settled down again to finish her tea party, things might not be quite as she wanted them but they were still pretty good. After all on tv little girls had tea parties on plastic chairs at plastic table with water or juice in plastic cups. She sat on a polished oak chair at a glass topped table set for four with a real china, bone white with a gold inlay flower pattern, miniature tea set. At her request there was a small tray of ginger cookies and a tuna sandwich with no crusts that had been cut in half diagonally. Carina also had real tea at her tea parties usually a nice nummy tea with milk and sugar but today she was forced to settle for sleepy time tea. It didn't taste bad but the toddler didn't find it nearly as tasty as real tea.
All Carina's tea parties lacked were real participants other than herself, Sometimes her brother or father joined her but not often and she found it weird to pretend her teddies and dollies were real becuase they couldn't get crumbs of tea on them so she couldn't pretend to make them eat.
As she nibbled at her sandwich and sipped her tea Carina decided that her newest goal was to make more real friends to have tea parties with.

Growth Prompt:
Carina is quite the little girl...a little too refined for a toddler! Sure she's still pretty rough around the edges, but most kids want to play in the mud and there she is, having tea parties with fine china! Not to mention her rather polite temperament. Despite all this, she is still a toddler. Like all toddlers do at some point in their lives, Carina throws a temper tantrum. What happened that caused her to go from polite and soft spoken to a raging, screaming ball of anger? What does it take, and how long does it take her, to calm down?

Growth prompt response Things don't always go your way.
"I hate you the most, I hate you forever," Carina screamed, her normally grey skinned face now red as it flushed with anger. The young curio's rage was centered on the one eyed Nutbar named Purple which appeared to shake as it floated only a few feet away. "I'll never forgive you or feed you again or.. or.. anything." A small slipper clad foot was stomped almost painfully into the wooden floor to illustrate the girl’s current level of rage. Purple had betrayed her and he would know nothing but the girl’s wrath from this day forward. Carina would never ever forgive him even if he begged and brought cookies and hypnotized the whole world into loving her.
"Whataboutbaths?" Being nervous only seemed to make Purple’s words run together even more. Even so Carina understood him because she was used to the strange nutbar speak by now.
The young curio paused needing to think about that, baths were fun, there were bubbles and wars with sponges and toys . Plus when she was done everything smelled nice and her skin was all clean except for the changeable black markings which were a part of her anyways. Purple even helped her play by being the enemy, that always lost, and bringing her a towel afterward. Still, he had betrayed her, had said he liked Orion better and that was NOT OKAY! So even though she was going to end up alone and have to have war with herself Carina had to punish Purple. "No baths either," she declared, a little glee gleaming in her purpleish pink eyes when she noted the honest dejection the hypno-blob began to portray. Good he was, sad she hoped he was sad forever.
"Nobathsisnofunyouarenofungoingtosleepnowpleasebefunlater" Purple warbled then floated away before Carina could reply, apparently to go sleep somewhere.
Hands still balled into fists Carina sniffled, first Purple had betrayed her and now he had abandoned her? It wasn't fair it really wasn’t, she was good and nice and and..
Small pale lips trembled though no longer with rage and it was not an angry shout that passed them next but a mournful sob. Carina flung herself onto her bed and buried her face in a pillow letting warm wet tears soak into it. Still, she smacked a hand into the mattress in frustration as she cried. It wasn't fair it wasn’t how things were supposed to be and she hated it. Loathed to her very core this break from her perception of reality. It made her feel very funny in her stomach to be told she wasn't Purple's favourite. He was hers and he had to like her best it was the way the world worked and yet.. it hadn't turned out that way.
"What in the nine circles of hell happened in here."
The redhead turned her tearstained face to the doorway to catch sight of her father standing there arms crossed with an unimpressed look on his face. Carina knew why too and she was maybe just a little bit ashamed. Her normally clean, if item filled, room was a really really big mess right now. Stuffed animals and others toys were all over the place after she'd thrown them at her brother and Purple. The rainbow caterpillar that normally guarded the end of her bed had be hurled at Orion’s head earlier and now lay at the foot of her closet door.
Carina wasn’t sorry she’d thrown the stuffed animal, or that’d hit her brother, but her stomach felt funny at the look her father was giving her over the mess her room was. “I” she licked dry chapped lips, voice a little hoarse from crying and screaming. “I’m sorry” she mumbled. Carina was still upset but she was also not mad at her father and being angry at him never made anything better.
“Mmhmm,” Dark eyes narrowed and stared at her from the doorway. “Are you sorry about throwing things at your brother’s head, you could have hurt him.”
Carina stared at her father then frowned and shook her head furiously “ No! He stole Purple from me I’ll never forgive him.” Even as she raised her voice again Carina continued to cry, was nobody on her side? Didn’t anyone love her?
“ Purple is asleep on my keyboard,” her father grumbled. “And that’s no reason to throw things at your brother.”
“He made Purple love him more.” Orion needed his silly adventures, which were sometimes fun but she was never going on one again ever because she HATED him, and she to be special it was important.
“Purple loves whoever’s fed him last more” her father replied and crossed the toy covered room to sit beside Carina. “You and I need to have a talk about this though.”
~ Carina was grounded, which had lead to another brief tantrum but it didn’t change the fact that for the next week she wasn’t allowed any special trips and she had to go to bed a half hour early. Still, the curio felt a little better inside now, a little less like she wanted to throw up.
Her father has listened to her explain why her brother was evil, and why Purple needed to be punished and why she was a little tiny bit scared. Carina liked things just so, down to the way the markings on her body were and it made her feel nervous when things were how she was used to or how she thought they ought to be.
Her father had told that no one gets their way all the time and that if they were always what you though they’d be life would be boring. He’s mussed up her hair and told her that violence wasn’t okay and that family was more important than who liked who best. Then, and this had eased her stomach the most, he told her his family called him the black sheep, the one everyone thought was weird and he wasn’t anyone’s favorite but they still loved him.
Carina wasn’t ready to apologize to Purple or Orion just yet, and a little part of her still thought they deserved her being mad, but she had admitted she didn’t hate them. As she fiddled with the nobs on her forehead the small girl wondered if she was going to end up a black sheep too and if it would really be all that bad.
( uneeded ooc explanation. Carina as a toddler is very much like a little kid( or anyone new to it) with an etch a sketch. It’s exciting and fun to play with but there’s limits to what you can do that looks good and going outside that makes the pictures looks funny. Carina as a toddler is playful and friendly but with limits, her mind is restricted in what she thinks is right based on imaginary boundaries she’s set up. Like a person gaining more skill Carina will become more open minded and mildly less prissy as she grows)

Growth response Carina had grabbed hold of currently forgive Purple and squished him tightly to her chest ignoring his protests. " See, I'm stronger now too , you can't get away anymore." The curio had now idea exactly how she had grown or why only that when she'd got up in the middle of the night to pee she'd looked different in the bathroom mirror. It had taken a few moments for things to register in Carina's brain but then suddenly she knew she was bigger. Not only was her nightgown too small how but she stood taller, she could almost reach the high shelf in her closet, and her hands didn't seem as small either. For a few moments Carina had quietly examined her new self, admiring her longer legs, did she have to shave now, and the way her hair had also gotten longer and wavier. Some things were the same though, her eyes didn't seem to have grown and the knobs on her forehead didn't seem much bigger either.Carina was unsure about her teeth as well, they seemed whiter and she thought she might have more but she'd really counted them before. Once the pink eyed girl was sure of all the changes, and that they weren't just her imagination she'd gone in search of someone to tell. It being the middle of the night only her Nutbar pet had been awake but he was good enough for her to talk about. ~ Purple had been happily eating the households leftovers when Carina had come out of nowhere and started babbling at him. His one eye bulged a little both in surprise at the change in her and from the force of her hug. He raised his swirled disk with one three fingered hand and focused his powers on the girl. "Youwillletmetgoandgeticecreamandtellmehowyoubecamebig." When the arms around him loosened the nutbar let out a relived sigh. He did not understand what was happening but he would find out and there would be ice cream!

Easter 2010 ~ Warm rays of sunlight shone down on multitude of children that had gathered at the park for an Easter egg hunt. People milled about conversing with one another as the last bits of the event were setup. In fairness for all the organizers were putting the youngest children and their families closest to the start so that they could get to some of the more easily visible and closer eggs. Carina had lucked out there, because while she was bigger than most of the people she'd be starting with, Orion was still small so they got to be near the front anyways. Of course the young redhead wasn't just gonna take advantage of this, she was really goign to help her brother if he wanted or needed it. Besides they had a special extra helper too in Purple, they're father was just watching from the sidelines, he could fly and move really fast annnnd maybe Carina could ask him to secretly hypnotize people doing better than them. Carina smoothed the wrinkles out of her lavender dress with one hand and held tightly to her little plastic basket the other another. " Remember Purple you can't steal eggs from other peoples baskets but you can take one they're reaching for if you get it first." Competition she promoted but outright stealing was wrong as far as Carina was concerned, even if it might have got her extra eggs. The grey skinned nutbar bobbed his whole body up and downin agreement. "Purpleremembersnostealingseggsandnoeatingeggs" he paused to suck in another breath" andnevereverisPurpletotouchanyone" Orion giggled at that "We have to teach you to be gentle , like a puppy." Carina laughed and smiled at the little, blond, winged boy that was her brother. It was a silly thing he'd said but it was correct. Purple just got so excited sometimes he bounced everywhere and hurt people by accident, just like little puppies. "We already give him table scraps" Unfortunately for the nutbar what he tended to get as 'treats' was usually whatever Orion and Carina themselves didn't want to eat. Purple seemed to be paying no mind to the teasing, single eye seemingly focused on the visible eggs in the small grass field which lay behind the jungle gym. Moments later they were released onto the field and Carina used her free hand to grab Orion's as she dragged him forward and to the left towards where she thought she saw several eggs close together they could collect. The curio did her best to ignore the other kids and parents around her and focus just on the eggs, only releasing her brother's hand when they were close enough to the eggs to split up and each go for one. In her peripheral vision she spotted Purple dive bombing a bright yellow egg with manic glee in his single eye. Carina's own purplish pink eyes were locked on a green egg nestled into a similarly coloured clump of clover. Disguised but not enough to escape her notice as the girl's fingers reached down to scoop it up "I fell trying to get my egg, now there's grass juice on my leg." Carina blinked and turned her head to look over her shoulder at his brother. Orion was getting steadily to his feet again and there was indeed a long, wet, green grass stain on his left pant leg. Still, that wasn't what bothered Carina. " Why're you talking weird?" Orion shrugged and dropped his egg with it's partially cracked shell into his basket. "I dunno it just came out, " the toddler replied. No rhyming sentence seemed forthcoming and both siblings shrugged it off and went back to gathering up eggs. Aside from a few collisions in attempts to get to eggs first, neither sibling nor Purple experienced anything unpleasant during the rest of the hunt. Too eager to wait till she got home to open her eggs however Carina eagerly dug into her basket on the car ride hoped and plucked out one with a fuchsia shell that she began to squeeze to open. The side spit apart with a pop and several small bugs shaped magnets fell into Carina's lap along with a gold foil wrapped piece of chocolate. She gave a small squeal of delight that was cut off by a hiccup. Then another, and another, the young girl gasped for air in between each high pitched hic. There seemed to be no way of stopping them and Carina was nevermore; also upset because her bother had scooted over in his seat and Purple had floated to the front of the car like she was contagious. It's jus" hic " just hiccups" she hissed before another burst of the them stole her breath. Just as her chest and throat began to hurt the hiccups subsided and Carina frowned "I don't know how that happened" she grumbled. Sure she never really knew why hiccups started but she'd always been good at stopping them before. "You okay" her father asked from the front and Carina could see in the rear view mirror that his forehead was doing that crinkly thing it did when he got worried. "Yep I'm sore but okay now" she could breath again, and she had cute little magnets! All would have been well at that point if the rest of the ride home had remained uneventful. It soon became apparent that that was not to be the case. Each egg that she or Orion or purple, who'd somehow collected the most eggs even without a basket to hold them, opened resulted in something weird as well as strangle tingly feelings on their backs.. Orion sung in an sort of opera way, Purple tried to play pattycake with the glove compartment and Carina felt the oddest urge to purr and let someone rub her tummy. The gifts s that came from the eggs, stamps and stickers and the like were pretty poor compensation for the weird things that happened to the children and nutbar. Still they themselves seemed safe enough. The chocolates though.. not even Purple who was known to eat ceramic pears would touch them.
