Christian spun, decapitating one beast while wounding another. At least thats what it seemed like to him. With the fading light and the dense cover of the swamp visibility was getting worse by the second. The only things that provided constant light were the his runes.
His hooves dug in deep into the murky earth as he sped along behind her, attacking when necessary. A light of emotion made his eyes burn brighter than ever before. In battle, Christian came alive. It was the only time he could let go of everything and t'were it not for Mei-Lin, he would have stayed. As it was, he had a ward to protect, however unwilling his was to do it.
He dodged her magic. Of course he had written her off as nothing, but a nuiscance. Now he was glad for her prescence. "Go right! The swamp drops off to a cavern. Keep running." If she stopped and tried to jump, she would die. It was simply to far.

The unitaur's horn was faintly pulsing with magic and light as her disguise started to slowly slip. Mei wasn't worried though - there was no room to be worried about appearances when one was running for her own life after all - and so she kept running.
The breeze sent warning bells in her mind and silver eyes peeked over to her fighting companion. She was defensive magic and life, so nothing was more shocking than seeing how alive he was. If there was a god for fighting, for strength, for death then this unitaur next to her must be him.
"Right?!" Mei-lin finally managed to yell back, "There's more of them to the bloody right! What's straight ahead that we must avoid?" She demanded while slicing out at more of the beasts.

Christian's sword pulsated in his hand. He vaguely had time to register a black blur infront of his face before he struck upwards, cutting a creature off from getting at his throat. His lungs were on second gear and burning, a sure sign that he needed to finish this off soon.
"Right, Right!" He bellowed. "Damn it, woman. We're surrounded! Just go right and shut up."
The faster he ran, the more time seemed to slow down. His cloven hooves dug into the muck as he made a sloppy turn, barreling through foliage like a bat out of hell towards a gaping cavern. Even in the night it was easily spotted because of it's enormous girth. He couldn't think about her anymore.
Taking a deep breath, Christian used his magic to enhance his speed before leaping off the cliff face.

"Bu-but!" Mei-Lin nearly stopped in protest until another beast threw itself at her. "By Hell's gates!" Twisting on her hooves, Mei slung wind like a knife across the beast's face and with a howl the thing barely missed her. Thank the gods. The unitaur blinked, but still the blurs of the scenary and those red eyes kept blending together.
She didn't know what made her trust him. But instead of staying on course Mei took a blind dash after Christian. Following his lead the wincing female flew behind him and over the cliff face with a yell. Oh, oh! Fearing the impact, Mei closed her eyes and prayed for the best.

His arm shot out to wrap around her waist and pull her to him on the opposite side. When he'd landed, Christian knew in the back of his head that he had finally lost her, but he'd be damned if he would let her die.
He hadn't counted on falling with her.
The last of his strength left him the moment he tried to pull them up on the cliff. One, maybe two steps away. He saw the ground fly above him as he tilted back with his sword raised high. Christian spared a glance at the female before falling into frozen hell.

Mei-lin felt Christian's arm around her waist and nearly felt safe and secure just from his touch alone. That was until she opened her eyes for a peek. They were definitely falling and she could feel that something was not right.
Panicking Mei looked at Christian and swallowed though she had let out a small sound of surprise. Biting her lip she closed her eyes and leaned against him. Please, plea - then came the darkness. The unitaur had passed out.
Energy, wild as the wind and full of life like spring made a cushion beneath them as they fell.

Frigid tentacles stole the breath from his lungs with their burning touch. Christian kept his mouth closed as best he knew, fighting against death itself. His cloak bore him down when he kicked off, and the jewelry decorating his horn fell into his eyes, but he had to make it.
Desperately, he broke free of the surface with a gasp. Hastily, he resheathed his sword, and noticed the female for the first time. He fought the current to be by her side, arm slipping about her and grateful she'd had the sense to save herself. Christian kicked off towards shore, taking longer than he'd liked in order to make sure that her head was out of the water.
Darkness and exhaustion made him loose focus. More than once he fell back to the current, but at long last he pulled up onto the shallow waters and dropped down in a dead faint.

Her body remembered the sensations of falling and being dragged through water by someone else, but her mind was confused as Mei-Lin woke up the next morning. Sore and groggy the female unitaur made a soft protest as she tried to push her body up out of the water. Everything hurt. Squeezing her eyes shut, Mei tried to fight off the ache in her head. And her arms, and her legs...her whole body was sore.
After a moment she started to remember some of last night and the unitaur gasped. "Christian? Christian?" Calling out softly she spotted the other unitaur laying near to where she had woke up.
Had he saved her? It looked like it. The thought made Mei-Lin smile as she forced her weary body over to his. Her own scrapes and bruises were put aside as she slowly dragged him onto dry land and started to work her magic on him. Soon enough a faint pink glow filled the darkness.

In his dreams, Christian floated through a sea of opaque darkness that rippled like satin around his fingertips. His eyes were half-lidded; seeing and not-seeing the vast world around him. His lungs burned, his body ached. Was this...?
No. As the world evaporated around him, he reached out to grasp the last tendril, only to have it phase out of his touch. Then everything turned pink. Christian blinked his eyes open with a groan, reaching up to shield his eyes. He felt...better, actually, but he couldn't figure out why.
Then he turned his head to see the female and instantly he scowled. Christian slapped her hand away, "I don't need your help." He tried to sit up, but only slumped back, coughing up river water.

Mei-Lin's eyes widened in hurt surprise as her hand was slapped away but the unitaur gave Christian her best glare. "Sure you don't." She rolled her eyes as the sarcasm dripped off of her tongue, "Cuz you are such a beautiful ball of energy and health at the moment." Her expression didn't lie - there was no change in her stubbornness even after last night's events.
A warm breeze scented of cherry blossoms swirled around the two of them as Mei cleaned up the water and dried both of them off. Pushing back against Christian she touched his shoulder and cleaned up the last of last night's wounds before slumping back triumphantly. "Done."
Shaking her head, she held up a hand. "Don't even get angry at me. I'm just helping you. And no - my magic is like the wind, it's not easy for others to pick up on." She was indeed a healer rather than a fighter. Though she wasn't going to admit that she felt pretty useless last night to him. Nu-uh.

Christian gave her a stern frown that didn't reach his eyes. They stared at her, eternally dead and void of the emotion that made his teeth grind against one another. This female would be the death of him, he knew it.
He stood as soon as he was able. In one swift jerk, Christian had his cloak off him and was shaking it out. Large, ugly, obscene scars were visible on the area above his heart and when he moved, the glowing draconic wing markings on his sides glittered. "I'm not angry with you. I'm am angry at my weakness." He said simply before tugging the cloak back on.
Then he walked away.

Watching him stand Mei-Lin was about to fire back a sharp retort before his words sank in. Not to mention the scars that stood out so visibually against his skin. What had happened to do that to him? And that marking...oh! Frowning Mei stood up and watched him walk away. "Your weakness?" She moved quickly to walk behind him at a trot.
Really the unitaur was rather childlike in her actions; relentless and bold, "But you fought so well last night! If you hadn't been there I don't know what might have happened! Really." She nodded and smiled at him encouragingly, "After last night, I think you're a great warrior!"

Christian stopped and spun around, visible anger outlining the contours of his face. "Fought well? Are you blind, female?!" He gestured to the cliff. "If I had 'fought well' we would not be down here." The unitaur raked a hand through his hair, grinding his teeth against one another as he willed the emotion out of his body. He didn't want it, didn't need it, and would live longer without it.
When he looked back at her, he growled and rolled his eyes. "A great warrior indeed." Her smile only fanned the flames, so he turned away with a stomp. "Tell me, don't you have any place to be besides attached to the hem of my cloak?"

"And if you hadn't fought well - well we'd be dead!" Mei-Lin retorted sharply. Stomping she crossed her arms, "Sure we didn't fly away into paradise afterwards, but we are alive. Is that not a good thing?" She snorted before shaking her head. Males.
She stepped towards him and looked at his cloak, "Don't bring your cloak into this, I'm pretty sure it's better company at the moment than you, ya sour-puss." Her gaze was hurt for a split second before she laughed sharply, "Not really. If you haven't noticed I'm quite alone." She paused and looked at him, "I take it that you have been traveling alone as well?"

Christian wished he was dead.
He looked back at her, and didn't respond to the insult. It didn't bother him that he'd hurt her because he hadn't cared for her to begin with, which made walking away all the easier.
The dark unitaur tossed his cloak around his shoulders, and began forward. "I prefer it that way." He retorted bluntly. "It's better for our kind if we're alone."
