Fastosus wasn't impressed. He'd heard flutters were as apt to flit about as the butterflies whose wings their own looked so much like. Now he had proof. Patience was not a virtue they seemed to cultivate, if Feya was anything to go by.

"There are some," he replied, "who would say that the waiting itself is...a lesson of sorts. A time to rest the body and refresh the mind." He paused, tilting his head as if to consider, though he already knew the mare would not wish to sit and think.

"Others choose to be active. They might nose around for food, raise children, explore the once familiar landscape as a new and wonderful place with the mist covering everything."

'' But didn't you say one could get lost in mist if not patient in waiting for it to go away? ''

Now that stallion wasn't standing any more Feya could inspect him better. It seemed he had some kind of armor. Could he be a knight in armor like in the stories she used to listen to along with her friends. And what were those on his back? She never saw ones that looked like that.
Feya tilted her head to one side to have a better look of them.

The corner of the stallion's mouth turned up a touch. So, she did listen. Promising. And she was looking him over. He wondered that she had waited so long, and what she thought. But he wouldn't ask of course. That would be rude.

"Some would say that the point is to become lost in the mist," he answered. "Admittedly, it is easier when one is not so tiny, for I am certain your size makes a puddle look like a pond, a pond like a lake, and a lake could be mistaken for the wide open ocean." He wasn't insulting her, and his tone hadn't changed whatsoever. He was merely observing a fact.

'' Well I suppose it wouldn't matter too much if one got lost in mist if one was traveler and wouldn't actually mind what is the next place he or she ends up in. ''

Feya shrugged and continued to stare in the wings. It was true what stallion said. Things do seem a lot bigger to her than they do to other bigger animals. Still she could fly and that was her advantage.

'' Well yea but I can fly so I can see things from higher view point. And it is usually less crowded above the tree tops. ''

Feya leaned her self to one side trying to get better look at the things that looked like wings that she almost fell. Catching her balance in time preventing the fall she giggled. That was it the end of her patience. She had to ask.

'' Are those you're wings? ''

The more she spoke, the more intrigued Fastosus became. Earlier he had been inclined to dismiss her save for her visual appeal. But now...she was more intelligent than she had shown before. Impressive. And appealing.

"Seeing things from above would certainly be an advantage, if you could stay aloft longer than this mist allows you to," the stallion agreed. He saw that she was staring and was about to narrow his eyes in confusion when she finally spoke up after a near-fall.

It wasn't the question he'd expected, but he probably should have, given that she was a flutter, for whom flying was a fact of life.

"They are wings only in the sense that wings are what they most resemble," he answered. He never really thought about them himself, save to remember that wherever he was, he needed to have enough room for them.

'' Wings in the sense that wings are what they resemble? ''

Feya repeated part of the sentence in attempt to digest what the stallion just said. Still no matter how much she thought about it or repeated it in her head she just couldn't understand what he had said.

'' Well they are the strangest ones I have seen till now. ''

The more she looked at them the more she wanted to know how they function.

'' Can you move them? They look a bit small for flying... ''

Could they really be used for flying? And if not why do they exist. Things that couldn't be used properly seemed made no sense to Feya. Or was he some kind of flutter like her? Feya moved her wings few times to get rid of the dew that had collected on them.

"Yes, exactly," Fastosus replied, not entirely surprised that the flutter was focusing on the wings. It seemed like the sort of thing that type of soquili would be interested in.

But, she seemed so confused, so he relented and explained more fully. "They are not actually wings like yours. They are...adornments. A part of my armor. They are no part of my body."

'' Oh... I suppose that makes sense. ''

Sure it did. So small wings would never be useful if they were part of his body. Or would they...
Feya examined his armor with her eyes. This was the first time she saw someone wearing one and she didn't really understand what use did it have. Decoration?

'' What is armor used for exactly? ''

Fastosus blinked in surprise. He had expected a followup question about his armor, yes, but to ask its purpose? What sort of sheltered creature was this flutter? Here now, she had given him a choice, all unknowingly. He could preserve her innocence and naivete, or he could shatter it. Though the latter had some appeal, the stallion was not by nature cruel, though he was capable of doing cruel things if he deemed them necessary.

"Armor was once used for protection," he told the small mare. "but today it is mostly used for adornment, a canvas on which to list one's accomplishments and entitlements. My armor makes a statement about me, says I am capable of defending myself and protecting others. That I have lived among humans and worked alongside them." It was not a simple explanation, but it was carefully crafted to gear Feya's interest away from the bloody realities armor was meant to hold up against.

Feya fluttered with her wings excitedly. She had met a real live hero. She wondered if he was just like the ones she heard about from fairy tales.

'' Oh. Than you must be special and important individual. ''

She used to imagine how a hero would look like but none of her imaginary heroes was even close in similarity with the one that was in front of her. They all were white, with long manes and tails, some curly some straight. The metal armor covered most of they're bodies always shining in warm sun. With long spiral horns on they're forehead armor.

Feya tilted her head to one side while she was comparing Fastosus with her imaginary concept of how a hero looks like. They were so different and the only conclusion that could fit to this problem is that there were more different kinds of heroes than she thought.

'' It must be great to be able to protect others. I am so small that only thing I can do is run away when it gets too dangerous. ''

Feya was well aware that she was no match for other bigger creatures but she hoped things will change in future.

Fastosus had to smile, slightly, at Feya's persistent innocence. The whole story of who he had been and how he came to be here now was something he would probably never tell her in full, no matter how long they ended up knowing each other.

"There was a time when I was something like that, long ago," he told her. He had to wonder what she was thinking as she looked at him now, examining him again. He had no real idea how her thought process worked. It would be something he would enjoy dissecting in detail.

"It is a source of pride, yes, to be able to protect the small and delicate creatures, like yourself," he admitted. Those eyes narrowed slightly, to see how she would react to his "little slip."

Feya smiled. He sure didn't look like a hero and he didn't act like one when she met him. But these last words he spoke were something only a true hero would live by. For to be nobel you need to sacrifice your self to protect the weak.
When she was little she used to dream of a hero that would protect her. And like all her childhood friends she used to play scenes from old stories she used to listen of a maiden, hero and a beast. Though she would usually play the role of the beast and that was only because she has always been much bigger than rest of the foals. Even those that were older.
A scene passed through her mind, as it used to in her youth, of a maiden and a hero and a beast. But this time she was that maiden and her newfound friend the hero. Though she had to admit to herself that he would be a perfect beast. The mare thought of it made her blush coloring her cheeks in pale pink. With a dreamy look in her eyes, gentle smile, she spoke softly.

'' You must have saved a lot of maidens in your past... ''

Fastosus blinked, unsure what on earth was going through Feya's mind that had promted that remark. But...hrm. He should be careful of what he said. He had thought her attractive, yes, worth sheltering and protecting that innocence of hers.

If he was to woo her, however subtly, it wouldn't be good to tell her all of the truth. And yet, he couldn't be anything less than honest.

"I couldn't say," he told her. "When there was combat, the women were off with the children in a safer place." There was a glint of warmth in his eye, hinting that he would see that she remained in a safer place.

'' Oh?! '' Feya blinked '' That does seem like good strategy. Foals are the most fragile little things. ''

Feya fluttered her wings to get rid of the dew that formed on them while her back fur got goose pimples as she started to feel chilly. She thought about warm spring days to warm herself up and sighed as her efforts gave no result.

"Foals are not the only fragile things in this world," Fastosus commented, keeping an eye on the flutter. There was something about how she was moving her wings that he felt he should understand, as it seemed so familiar, but he couldn't be certain. A clumsy question would have to suffice.

"Are you okay?" the stallion inquired, unable to think of a better way to phrase the age-old classic concern.
