James didn't want to push his luck any more, though he did have a few smart a** remarks for the teacher. He looked down at the card in front him a did as he was told, most of the stuff was crap he could do with his eyes closed.

Avrak sighed, she was thankful to see, she knew some of the stuff, but most of it was relatively new to her. Raising her hand she waited to be called on, she didn't want to fail any one just because she had a question.

"Yes, Miss Avrak?" Scott wore an amused smile at the fact that this girl was so into the class on only the first day, "What is it?" He picked up the Dilithium Crystal chamber, placing it beside his desk so he could take a seat there and teach from the desk. He pulled out the seat and sat down, folding his hands and giving the girl his attention.

"I just want to know, do we ever get to build one of the crystal chambers, or do we get to take a old one apart?" She put her hand down, the chambers were another interesting thing to her, what with the way they split up the power and used it, it some how reminded her of the way lasers used power.

James rolled his eyes and mumbled "Kiss a**." forgetting about the warning.

"Shut it, Kirk." Scott grinned again, "You must be a weapons major, Midshipman." He shook his head, "Later in the year we'll be coverin' how the ship's phasers and fushigi no umi crystals work. For now, know the difference between a nacelle and the captain's chair."
A few students laughed because they actually knew what nacelles (and a captain's chair) were.
"Now, starting with the hull," Scott used the small screen on his desk rather than verbally commanding the computer now, he pulled up the diagram, the Constitution Class Starship the USS Farragut. Get lucky and one day you'll serve aboard a Constitution class. Especially the Farragut or the Enterprise. Beauties they are."
"Let's start with the hull, The Farragut's hull, like any Starship, has it's registry on it, the Farragut's registry is 'NCC-1647'" Scott flipped the picture around to show the class the hull. "The registry number is used for identification in case tehre is no available contact. Every Starship of any class, is equipped with a registry, a crew -obviously- and a captain, a name of her own, her own shuttlecrafts and phasers, at least one nacelle and most importantly a prefix code, which can be accessed by otehr starships, this prevents an enemy taking control of any Starfleet vessel."

James payed attention, but he wasn't really interested, he wanted to know how things work, get hands on. Not sit and watch. "So what does the NCC stand for?" James asked just for the hell of it.

Avrak sat back and listened, this wasn't her cup of tea, but she was always willing to learn new things. She had to roll her eyes at Kirk, he was going to make every one suffer this year.

Annoyed as he was, Scott was just glad that the question was related to the material, It's arguable, technically it doesn't stand for anything. Supposedly people havfe come up with it standing for "Naval Construction Code" or "Naval Construction Contract" but literally it has as much meaning as the combination on a license plate of any car or hovercraft."

Unlike Kirk, ch'Dani raised his hand and waited for his turn to speak, becasue he wasn't going to be responsible for amking the class suffer. "So, the prefix "NCC" is only for certain classes, correct? The Constitution class?"

"Right, ch'Dani, there are others, but the most common, in fact, is NCC. It aapplies to more than the Constitution class, it applies to mosre than half of the classes, however, other prefixes in a registry include NX, NV, NAR, NGL and all kinds of otehrs, but that's a whole other class, I wouldn't want to get too far into it."

James smiled "Ok I got it now sir, thank you for clearing it up for me."

Avrak raised her hand again, "Um how many classes are there, like all together?" She was sure she could look it up and find out, but when there was some one there that could tell you and save you time, why bother wasting time?

"Too many, Midshipman." Scott replied with a smile, "I didn't have 'em all down 'til the end of last year, when I took Advanced Starship Mechanics IV. The class has officially covered every model since the start of Starfleet, the classes really only help you in the field of Engineering, or if you plan to Captain a Starship. Oh but don't take the Kobayashi Maru, it's impossible." - The students that knew what he was talking about laughed- "There's probably some way to prove your worth other than the test. Ya know, become captain anyhow." He laughed, "It's probably possible, I mean, I didn't program the scenario, if I had, not only would it be a little more winnable it'd be a little more true to real life."
Scott stood up, "Now, think it honestly, if you planned to take the test, and I'll be able to tell you right now, you're all stupid. Now, we continue:
"What is a nacelle?"

Kirk shot his hand up in the air with out a moment of hesitation "A nacelle is an outboard engine housing structure on spacecraft. Impulse nacelles of a sublight shuttlecraft house the ship's impulse driver engines. The warp nacelles in warp-capable shuttles and starships house the warp coils, necessary components of warp drive. The warp coils create a subspace displacement field, which warps the space around the vessel allowing it to ride on a spatial distortion, and travel faster than the speed of light. While not always present on starships, warp nacelles are the most common component of warp flight, dating as far back as Zefram Cochrane's original warp ship, the Phoenix, circa 2063. They were also sometimes known as power nacelles or warp drive pod during the 23rd century. Let me know if I missed anything sir" Kirk sat back in his seat and smiled at the blue boy.

Avrak looked at the boy infront of her, what the hell was he, a walking dictionary.

"Mister Kirk, did you forget that you're in the twenty-third century in your little definition?" Scott folded his arms, "Alright, Midshipman, if you know that much than how come you have't figured out how ta keep yer mouth shut yet?"

ch'Dani gave Kirk a confused eyebrow raise and turned back to the student instructor, "Say, Lieutenant, are you the same Montgomery Scott working on the theory of Trns-wrap beaming? And if so, how's that going?"

Scott laughed, "Alright, those of your that are interested keep asking questions beyond this class, gettin' me off topic. It's going nowhere at warp speed, thanks for asking." He looked up, "Are there any6 questions related to the material, and not, in any way, to my continuous problems with budget in this school. Or with missing animals - the academy's PETA population is really on my a** about where I've been sendin' them squirrels. . ."

James huffed, he answered the damn question.

Avrak raised her hand one more time "So this card has every thing we need to know?" she didn't want to flunk her first test.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 03, 2010 6:18 pm

"Yes, for the entire semester. Remember only the first tab is the first test. You lot are lucky I'm organized. Each tab is material for the corresponding test. It's not that difficult." He smiled, "And relax, they're not hard tests. They're just impossible to cheat on. Just so anyone who's planning on it knows. You'd best study."

Just then, an alarm sounded and the admiral of the fleet flashed onto all of the classroom's computer screens, announcing that all active lieutenants and above ranks were to report immediately to the loading dock. And that this was, "repeat, not a drill."

Scott sighed, "Alright class, looks like there's a bit of a stir out tehre on the final frontier, Class is dismissed today, look over the first tab and we'll go over it again on Wednesday. If I'm back by Wednesday. Go to your next class when it starts and if your techer's not there within fifteen minutes, you can skip out on that one too. Chances are they won't be. I'm off!" And with that, Scott ran out the door and toward the loading dock.

Kodon T'Var knew the risks of where he was, and the interation of a rendez-vous with Orions in that very spot, but the Orions were only willing to do business in that area of federation space. They had a thing for making the Klingons prove they really wanted whatever the Orions had. Whether it was slaves, or dilithium crystals or any other kind of element or material. When the Klingon Empire needed it, they often violated the Organian Peace Treaty just to get what they wanted. After all. Who really cared what those peace-loving Organians wanted? They couldn't do a thing without either side.
Of course the Klingons were uncloaked to do business with their Orion affiliates, but this wouldn't take too long. Soon, Starfleet would arrive and they'd cloak themselves and be off as usual. Kodon was only leading this particular mission because no one else had a chang'eng to captain the mission themselves.

It wasn't until Scott arrived that he found out he was being selected of a small crew to go and find out why there were Klingons in federation space. He sighed, those nasty Klingons didn't know when to quit.
He boarded the shuttle craft to take them all to the currently available USS Hood. And as soon as the entire crew was on board, the ship was off, toward their destination. On their way there, of course, they had their communications officer attempt to hail the Klingons.

"HoD maH 'oH taH ja' Sum USS HOOD." One of the crewmen informed the Commander that they were being hailed by a federation vessel. Obviously they were out of time. That was perfectly fine with him, as the Orions and Klingons had finished their business and the Klingons could reactivate their cloaking device and head home.
