A groan echoed through the barracks as the lieutenant attempted to roll over. Nine months and she had never gotten used to not being able to sleep on her stomach, she had slept on her stomach as long as she could remember, it was the most comfortable she had found, being unable to sleep that way made it difficult to get any sleep at all. Granted getting any sleep proved difficult when you felt like a whale that was about to explode. A large, wet, exploding whale, that pretty well explained how she felt right now as her brown eyes flickered open to stare into the darkness. Wet? Wait, why was she wet? Calla froze, her bed and pants were soaked, that would mean only one thing. Tossing her blankets aside she pulled herself up, hurrying to get to her feet, or even locate the floor in this darkness. Bracing herself on the headboard she pulled herself out of bed. As she pulled herself up though, her pain caught to her, sending her stumbling into the wall. …have…Twilight…wake Alister... She reached out to her wolf, her tone taught and desperate. As her pain abated she pushed away from the wall, stumbling towards the doorway. Another wave of pain washed over her, worse this time, as she fought with the lock, unable to focus through the pain to get it undone. The contractions seemed to close together, to strong, for being early into labor. Had she slept through her earlier contractions? That seemed to only logical conclusion, but even she was surprised that she was able to sleep that deeply. When the pain eased she finally managed to get the lock undone and the door open. As she rushed out of her warm barracks into the cold October air she wished she had had the sense to grab her jacket. The cold wind against her water-soaked clothes felt like she would freeze to death before she even made it to the infirmary. The infirmary, one of the perks of her becoming Sergeant had been that it placed her closer to the infirmary than her previous barracks had been. Which right now was a very good thing, considering she seemed to have slept through most of her contractions somehow and had a very short amount of time to get to the infirmary. Half way across the yard another wave hit her, this time sending her to her knees. She had studied medicine, she understood childbirth and the pain associated with it, but this was ridiculous and unexpected. She whimpered as she waited for the pain to fade away.
WoodWhisp had only been half-asleep, he knew Calla was getting closer and closer to her due-date, and it had him paranoid. Sleep had become a nigh impossibility the past few days. It was one massive waiting game, and he absolutely hated waiting games. So it didn’t take him long to get to his feet when he felt Calla was awake. He felt her pain, a small whimper escaping him, before he heard her words. And then he was off, quick and awake now he hurried into Twilight’s den. Nosing her gently to wake her, Twilight, his voice was soft but urgent, Twilight, you need to wake Alister. Calla’s about to give birth. She needs help. He had been dreading this moment. Up until now he had been able to pretend this wasn’t happening, that Calla was not going to have kids, that she wasn’t going to have kids with Alister. He knew any Spawn of Calla and Alister would be just as bad as the two of them. He knew that this would not end well, and if the past nine months told him anything it was that it was only going to get worse from here. Though with any luck she might ease up on him, she had put him through so many drills lately he had been tempted to just sit on her. And he would have, he had done it before after all, but he was afraid of hurting the child. He understood what this meant to Calla, it meant she would have a family, which was something she had never had before, and he didn’t want to take that from her. He knew what it was like to be a father, his liter with Twilight had taught him that well, and he only hoped that this kid would teach Alister the same thing.

Sleep had never been something that came easily for Alister but tonight had been one of those rare times, when he hadn't crawled into Twilight's den to curl up with the black wolf to try and sleep. True his bed was comfortable but he found it much more comforting to sprawl under a pile of blankets next to his bonded and stay that way until he decided to move before dawn. Sleep was after all a rare thing once winter was over. Rare but welcome. Not now though, not when that damnable bell could go off at any time and then the need for sleep would be a minor thing. Still, he tossed and turned forever trapped that restless little cycle. He couldn't sleep, nothing unusual, but when he heard the black wolf stiring in the den beyond he knew something wasn't right. Sitting up, he ran a hand through his hair with the startings of a yawn. His body demanded sleep but yet he couldn't get it. Such a pain really. Twilight? There was no answer from the black wolf, and he gave another yawn sprawling back into his bed for more sleep. For all he knew WoodWhisp was visiting Twilight again, not a problem of his considering he wasn't anywhere near by to be squashed by the larger wolf if by any chance he came to stay. The brief but urgent nudging at the back of his mind was minor annoyance, he wanted sleep and he was going to get it. Even if that meant blocking Twilight out. Alas Twilight didn't seem to what to be blocked out and he wasn't about to get any sleep any time soon. A mere groan escaped him and he pulled his pillow over his head in an attempt to block out the sound of the black wolf pawing his door. He didn't want to deal with Twilight right now. It was well past midnight for all he knew, and he wanted to sleep while those bells weren't screaming through the fort whether in truth or false alarm.
The nudging was fruitless, mainly because Twilight had been awake for quite a while. Mainly due to the fact that her bonded had been fretting over his lack of sleep for the past few hours. In all honesty, if she could have gotten through his bedroom door to sit on him, she would have. Sadly she couldn't. Despite being one of the smaller wolves in the fort. Of course such thoughts had been deemed highly trivial in response to WoodWhisp's nudging and then the words that followed. Body tensing, as she found herself on her feet in an instant, she was staring at WoodWhisp for several long moments all but asking the male to repeat what he'd just said. At this point in time, Calla was going into labor and Alister had choosen to try and block her out. As if that had ever done any good, but still. Why did her rider have to decide that he wanted to be a downright coward now of all times? Really, she was going to bite off his head for this someday. And from the looks of it, it was going to be someday soon. You go and find Calla, I'll drag this sorry excuse for a human out of bed. Nodding to her mate as drifted out of the den, claws barely clicking across the hard wood floor, Twilight was if anything annoyed with her rider and his lack of attentiveness. True this was one of those rare nights when the bells didn't sound for them to head out and face the centipedes but really, he should have known better than to try and lock himself up in here, when he knew how close Calla had been to giving birth.
You have got less than five seconds to get out here, Alister before I tear down this door. The reply that she got was a dazed one, and she nearly howled in frustration. Why did she have to do everything herself? Shoulder pressed to the door she gave it a good shove and the lock popped free with a metallic whine. Why did humans even bother putting those things in their doors anyway? They never kept a truely determinded wolf out. But that was besides the point right now. Right now she was glaring at her bonded and snapping at his heels as she herded him out of bed. Sleep would have to be something he got only if he keeled over and died from exhaustion tonight.

Walking had never proven so difficult before. With the waves of pain coming closer and closer together it seemed and her legs feeling like jelly it was a wonder the woman was making any progress at all. If Alister didn't get out here soon the next time she saw him she was going to rip out his entrails through his eyeballs and fashion a necklace. There, she felt better already. Or she did until the next wave of pain sent her stumbling to the ground again. Through all that had happened since she met Alister, she had not once stopped to regret any of it until right now. On top of the intense pain it felt like something akin to a boxing match was going on in her uterus. A whimper escaped Calla as she struggled to pull herself back up onto her feet. She was tempt to flop down and just give up, but the very pain that was attempting to push her down was the same pain that continued to push her on. She had to get to the infirmary, it would be just a skeleton crew at this hour but as much time as Calla had spent in the infirmary helping out over the summer everyone there knew her condition perfectly well. Someone would be prepared to take her and help her. Calla pulled herself to her feet, intending to make as much use of the pain-free period as she could. Struggling to remember everything she needed to know about the whole process in an attempt to distract herself and keep walking. Teetering precariously and struggling not to tumble down again she found a speck of relief as WoodWhisp returned to her side, holding her up. The thought to allow him to carry her occurred, but she didn't think she'd be able to actually get on the large wolf at this point. The doctors had largely discouraged her from riding the wolf, as large as she had gotten over the past months. WoodWhisp shrunk himself down, but before Calla could make up her mind the pain sent her stumbling forward again, leaving WoodWhisp so simply work to keep his rider upright. When she got her hands on Alister she was going to wring his neck around seven different ways and make his skin into a coat. There, she felt better already.
The male nodded and turned out of the den, hurrying back to his rider. He was surprised how much progress she had made for someone in so much pain. Quickly he was by her side, nudging her gently as she seemed frozen in place. He curled himself down as small as he could, considering her stood at the size of a large Alpha he couldn't exactly get very small, but she seemed to have other thoughts about hitching a ride. All WoodWhisp could do was attempt to nudge her along, to keep her moving. Alister better hurry. She's getting violent. He suggested to his mate, at this point it was hard to tell if she was just trying to make herself feel better or whether or not she was serious about making a necklace out his entrails. The pain seemed to serve as a reset button for her mind and he didn't exactly get a whole lot of time to examine how serious each thought was before it was wiped away entirely. All WoodWhisp could do was try to reassure her, and constantly glance over his shoulder to see if Alister was coming. If that man didn’t' get here soon WoodWhisp was starting to contemplate just how much he'd be willing to help Calla skin him alive. The man had better be a damn good father, or he was going to have not only the beta's trigger happy and violent rider, but also a large and determined wolf out for his blood. Granted he already wasn't very high up on WoodWhisp's list right now, considering how long it was taking him to get his a** out here and how much trouble Twilight seemed to be going through to get him up. Ah well, he would learn his lesson shortly.

Twilight was being pushy. Violently pushy and that was something that had never boded well for him. Especially at this hour of the night. The sharp, snapping fangs had him nearly skipping away from the wolf, but as always Twilight was close on his heels snarling with such a vengence he was sure the she-wolf would simply give up on getting him to go anywhere and just drag him off. Hearing a mere grunt of sadistic agreement, he scooted away from his bonded. Wasn't it bad enough Calla had tried to kill him dozens of times? Now Twilight was hopping onto the bandwagon too. Barely avoiding a sharp snap of annoyance from the aforementioned wolf, he could only glare at her before she effectively herded him out of his barracks. Twilight was anything but pleased with him, he could tell that much but it wasn't exactly, his fault. Any such objections were of course silenced by Twilight's growling. The wolf was having no qualms about reminding him of all the times she'd repeatedly warned him about just where and what his actions would cause. True he'd listened to her warnings once or twice but now the wolf was just being unreasonable.
The rough nudge in the direction Calla had stumbled off in was enough to distract him from his thoughts, it was either he silenced such thoughts for good or Twilight would maul him and then drag him off to the infirmary where Calla was no doubt heading. The woman was a scath few feet from him, a fact he was glad for considering Twilight had finally stopped nudging him along, but instead trailed behind him, close enoguh to snap at him should he even consider turning back. Had such a thing been considered? Of course it had been. Were such thoughts wise ones? Not at all, especially not since Twilight was out for his blood. Mentally sighing, even though it was cut short, Alister stepped close enough to catch Calla by the arm as the woman went stumbling again. "You really should let WoodWhisp carry you." It was a simple suggestion, something he had a feeling that would be shot down and buried rather quickly. It was better than nothing however, considering that even though the infirmary was close enough it was still a bit of a walk all the same.
Satisfied with her handiwork at the moment, Twilight's tail flicked, though she kept an eye on her bonded, knowing all too well the temptation he was battling down (only because she'd threatened to gut him several hundred times in the space of five minutes). If left to Alister she would have had to drag him out here, but of course it was never left to Alister or nothing would get done. Sad but true. Sometimes she really did wonder how and why she ever bothered to bond with him. Such thoughts were almost always shoved away though. Her bonded was an idiot yes. That didn't mean he was completely useless however. He had his uses most days. Sadly those days seemed to be few and far between. Tilting her head at her mate, she sighed somewhat. I take it she's refused all offers of a ride? A logical but at the same time foolish decision if Twilight had ever seen one. Still, if there was one thing that she knew it was that labor pains were vicious things. Vicious enough to drive anyone to tears. Speaking of which... I do hope those violent thoughts involved gutting him, because I'd be more than willing to help her. Yep Twilight loved her bonded, so very very much. Just, not right now.

Alister always knew how to hit the wrong button it seemed. In fact he was entirely to good at hitting the wrong button, and especially at the absolutely wrong moment. “You think I hadn’t thought of that!” she growled at him before another shock of pain forced her to accept his offer to hold her up, somewhere very deep and buried by the pain she was grateful for the help. Once she managed to pull herself together again she was fighting back tears, she couldn’t cry. Not now, she couldn’t cry now. She didn’t have the time and it didn’t help that Alister was standing right there and being the only thing preventing her from stumbling to the ground again.”You try to get on a wolf that big when you feel like a whale.” She had been unable to ride WoodWhisp for the past two months, and had never noticed how much she really relied on him until she was simply to fat to ride him. Beside her WoodWhisp rumbled in mock displeasure, doing his best to maintain something of a soothing presence in his rider’s mind. Calla was happy for that more than she was going to let on, it gave her some refuge in her mind that she could hold on to when everything went black. Like it just did, forcing Calla to stop moving until she could see straight again.
Why did she let her get herself wrapped up in this whole mess. She was a Sergeant, she was a wolfrider, how on earth was she going to make room in her life for kids! Secretly she glanced at Alister before another wave of pain made everything go black. Time was running short, she was going to have to hurry, she didn’t have time to have a break down. But her body seemed to have completely different ideas. Between the pain and the surrealness of the whole situation it had decidedly gone on auto-pilot, leaving Calla in what felt like a prison-cell in her own mind. In fact it almost felt like the only thing keeping her within her own body at all was the calming link WoodWhisp was decidedly maintaining.
“Alister.” She heard herself whisper but had no control over the words she was saying. She knew what was coming next, and as soon as she was in control of herself again she was going to kill herself, and probably him for good measure just so word would never get out and ruin her tenuous reputation. “Alister, I’m scared.” The wind blew, maybe it would take her words with it. It was a quiet whisper, maybe he wouldn’t hear. But some part of her, the part that had said the words, obviously wanted him to hear. He was the father of these children, he had to do something to be helpful. Hopefully later she could sweep the whole thing under the rug with pain and raging hormones.
Carefully the large wolf divided his attention between his bonded and his mate, maintaining a soft flow of reassurance to her in his own attempt to ease her pain. Each time it flowed through their bond and thudded through his own mind in what he knew was only a fraction of the pain she was feeling. I can carry her if Alister would help her up. He knew it was an obvious statement but he felt something needed to be said on the matter. He had to protect his manly pride after all. Or what of it he had left. In fact he probably would have said more had he not been promptly distracted by the bubbling of fear and apathy that frothed to the front of his riders mind. He was quite as shocked by her words as any of them, but had little time to think on the matter other than A tiny kindness would go a long way right about now. a light comment to Twilight before he had to focus on the woman clinging to their mental link for everything she was worth.
