I agree that mass production and selling them would be a bad idea unless you have permission from Gaia. However, 10$ is very cheap compared to sites that offer similar hats. Check out http://www.genkihats.com they sell all kinds of anime/manga/videogame hats. Maybe they could help you out.

I actually have an AFK hat and a Panda Hat that I bought at a convention about three or two months ago. I'll take pictures of them sometime so you can use them as references or something. >_O But my Panda Hat has a hole in it because of my puppy. >_>

you could go onto Simplicity.com and look up some hat patterns in multiple sizes and see which ones look most like each hat you wish to make and alter it to whatever you want. Patterns for hats run anywhere between $5-10.

I might be making me and my friend OMFG hats for AnimeNorth, but, alas, I don't have too much time, seeing as I have to finish both of our costumes. Yay.

... I want a coco hat...
My friends have made me hats. A big problem for some sewers is bunching. You have to cut the fabric right so it doesn't bunch at the top. I'd make the hat out of four triangles. The one my friend made me had 6 triangles and it bunched (custom). The one that was made for me (AFK) was made with 4, and it didn't bunch at all.

Wow, lots of responses. I posted this so long ago! I sold hats at Youmacon in 2006. I did not sell any liscenced material, but I did get a lot of commissions for OMG and AFK hats. I don't mass produce them, I didn't copy the gaia online hat. I made my own pattern from scratch. I really just make people pay for materials and shipping, not so much time it takes to make the hat. Because I was not allowed to sell liscenced material at Youmacon, I started making new designs for hats and such. I came up with a lot of cool hats that were original designs. I sold everything. It was really cool biggrin .
