Derecho continued his little hopping trek though the snow until he was fairly close to Merrill and his sister whom he saw was playing the part of prisoner to the hilt.As he skid to a stop still a few feet away he looked up at Merrill who towered over him in size and bulk with a determined expression. In all honesty he didn't really have a plan after this point..but trying to get around her through the deep snow certainly wouldn't work...Tipping his head slightly with furrowed brows as he thought it over Derecho caught sight of the brush beside him.
Of course! There wouldn't be deep snow under the brush ...and he was still small enough to squirm through the low slung branches. Ducking off the trail Derecho waded for a few steps through the snow before he ducked under the bush. Derecho went from brush to brush until he was up the hill a ways and bounded out into the snow with a look of triumph on his face.
"I have the high ground now!" He declared before leaping through the snow and launching himself at Merrill from the hillside, clear over his sister head.

Aah, the wonders she might have dazzled them with! Perhaps she should clamp down on the little body while in mid-flight, a tiny duck to the side doing enough to allow her to snatch Derecho's fur - Merrill had not, after all, proven her accuracy in such a manner, and to do so would most likely cause awe; it was very hard task to catch things in the air after all! But then, Merrill had grown up around trecherous terrain: tougher muscles, thicker pelt, infallible balance and, curiously enough, the ability to pinpoint a target and leap upon it with precision. It was a neccessity in the mountains: otherwise, she would have fallen off long ago. Thus the beta had learned at an early age that if she needed to get something, it was to be done fast and with little hesitation.
Yet . . . no, there was no need to frighten the little one so. A game, Merrill reminded herself, a game and not survival was speaking. Derecho was her alpha's pup and self-proclaimed nephew, not a bird foolish enough to fly into her jaws. She shook her head inwardly. Aleu played her part well, bless her heart, and sang for her hero's rescue to come forth. And there Derecho was, smart enough to gain upper ground but not wise enough to note that leaping at her head was as good as charging her before. Merrill decided swiftly that he needed to be taught this lesson and steeled herself in the snow, watching the pup soar at her head.
Then, she quite simply tilted it so that the incoming target was note her vulnerable face but instead a skull that mountain goats could envy. Merrill readied herself for the impact, reminded briefly of the many headbutting games she and her elder brothers used to play - they took too much from the goats indeed.

Aleu watched as her rescuer made his way under the brush at the side of the path to take advantage of the lighter snow there. She had to hand it to her brother he was smart, most pups would have just ran at Merrill head on again. But not Derecho he thought things through....for the most part.
Her eyes shifted to Merrill as the Beta watched Derecho's approach. "Derecho's gonna slay the monster!" She called out as her brother launched himself at Merrill. But then to her dismay Merrill dropped to the snow, she could work with that. "The monster is still alive and I still need saving!" She sang out. "Will anyone save me?" She rolled over to get a better view of what would happen next.

Derecho was triumphantly flying through the air - the smug look on his face making it clear he thought for sure his wise plot to gain the upper ground would win him the day and rescue his sister. But alas it would not be so, as he sprung and closed the distance between them Merrill lowered her head so that rather then running off...or letting him furiously scrabble at her face he hit her remarkably hard skull instead ad bounced off with a startled yelp to go rolling into the snow.
Shaking his head slightly the pup gained his feet and wheeled about to give Merrill a glare, he wasn't wounded in any way other then his pride thanks to the soft snow, a bit winded maybe but hey that wasn't worth fussing about as far as he was concerned. He huffed out a breath and studied the situation further as though trying to figure out what to do next.

The not-so-dull thud was a satisfying sound after his surprised yelp. The most Merrill reacted with was with a grunt and tightening of her eyes, ears twitching backwards as she took shook her head of the collision. Used to it or not, it didn't stop that burst of pain. She was quicker to regain her bearings than Derecho, however, and by the time the pup was glaring at her, a set of fangs were in his face: threatening, sharp. "An ill-chosen action, Si-Son," Merrill growled softly, the flash of teeth suddenly covered by her lips as she pulled her head back to view him from above with something akin to raised brows in her expression. "Good in the high-ground and good in keeping to already imprinted snow to keep momentum, but you recklessly charged nonetheless. You cannot maneuver in the air once you have been launched, leaving yourself wide open for things far worse than my thick head," she chided him. "Remember that. Now . . ."
She turned to include Aleu in the conversation, though first the beta tilted her head up to view the sky. She then yawned. "It appears my afternoon nap is coming on. Tucking that lesson in fighting into your bright minds, I suggest we return home. I hope you shan't tell your parents that I hit one of their sons' heads lest they hit mine in return."

Derecho yipped and flattened himself in the snow as Merrill's fangs threatened so closely, the little pup was pretty sure the beta wouldn't hurt him - but hey blows to the head did weird things sometimes, or at least that what he'd heard other muttering about Edgar - that he'd gotten that why for being dropped on his head as a pup - come to think of it he was fairly sure it had been Merrill herself muttering that under her breath, he couldn't quite remember.
But it didn't seem as though Merrill had any real intention to bite him, just a lesson to teach, and he'd do his best to remember it, Derecho didn't think it would be hard - it would be difficult to forget Merrill's flashing fangs after all and when she pulled back Derecho rose from the ground and jumped up to lick her muzzle before bounding off towards his sister "I'll remember!" He called back in promise to the Beta.

Aleu watched with horror in her eyes as Derecho slammed into Merrill's head. That yelp made her almost want to cry, even though she could see that Derecho wasn't actually hurt barely. Maybe a bruise but that was about it. Her attention moved back to Merrill as the beta spoke. "I will remember." She said with a nod of her head.
Part of her was disappointed that their play time was over but she was also glad to be going home. She was after all a bit tired and needed to get warmed up after rolling around in the snow. Standing she shock her body getting most of the snow out of her fur and then looked to Merrill to lead them back to the dens.

Merrill once again thanked the spirits that two of Menelaus's children didn't inherit his lack of common sense, though Derecho's affectionate act left her blinking several times before moving on. "Good. Now . . ." She took a few moments to stretch herself out, as if the epic battle from before had been nothing but a warm up, rolling her shoulders and neck with a few popping sounds. "Off we go," she told them, following at Derecho's heels and gently nudging Aleu forward in passing, even pushing off a bit of the snow, as they waded through the snow back. "Go straight to your mother's den when we return to warm up; I'll be in my own, not far in case you need me." Though spirits knew they might escape back in while she was napping, which was a problem.
She couldn't just give those up to watch them, but at the same time it wasn't as easy a rest with that risk in hand. Lately Merrill had been observing large pawprints near the border - clearly a bear's. Thankfully they had found none this time around, but the beta sincerely hoped it wasn't cause for alarm. She hadn't had time to investigate.

After being nudged along by Merrill Aleu began to happily trot after her brother, only glancing back at the beta for a moment who was hanging behind. Obviously Merrill had something to attend to and would follow behind soon enough. She turned back to face her brother as he lead their way back to the den. The idea of curling up with her mother to get warm made her happy.
As she trotted through the snow she began to hum. It was a pretty good beat and she hoped to turn it into the song about today's adventure after she gave it some thought. But first she wanted to get warm, perhaps have a nap and definitely get some food into her belly.

"We will" Derecho promised Merrill solemnly as she told them to go straight to their mother's den, Derecho might consider disobeying Ki-Adi or another wolf in the pack but he looked up to Merrill as a mentor far to much to consider not doing what she said. That might make the purple wolf angry - and Derecho certainly didn't want her angry at him for real, fake angry had been scary enough thank you very much.
"Hurry up Aleu!" he prodded his sister, calling to her from over his shoulder as they dashed down the path "I'm hungry!" he stated as they arrived and he slipped inside ahead of his sibling.

"I know I'm coming." Aleu called out as she bounded through the snow not far from her brother. She knew he was hungry, so was she. For a while now she had been hungry but playing with Merrill had been so much fun that she had all but forgot about her hunger, that was until she stopped playing. Now the only thing she wanted was to have a nice meal and curl up with her family for a nice nap.
