Well as far as boots go, I swear by the sporting good store "Big 5". I've bought some really freaking durable (have taken SERIOUS abuse and lasted me four years and counting and are still in great condition). And I got them on clearance for like 60% off. Big 5 always has boots on clearance so I would definitely check them out.

*facepaws* Wow, I sound like I should be in a commercial. Hahaha.
Teehee. I'll be sure to check out Big 5 next time I find one...I haven't seen one at all here...but I know there's one in Federal Way so if I hafta I'll go there I s'pose...

What are they made of keep in mind long lasting boots are not worth it if it nature can not break them down without caseing damage to itself.

You bring up a very good point. I'm actually quite surprised by their durability, considering they're mostly made of suede material, and the soles are rubber/some other synthetic polymer. So of course, the soles of most of the shoes out there aren't easily biodegradable, but I would assume that since suede is made from animal (and then probably treated with a ton of manmade chemicals, I know), it's not the worst kind of shoe to be wearing.

I wonder what more sustainable and eco-friendly options for good quality hiking boots would be.

I can think of maybeone or two but they would be costly or questionable.

I heart to go birding!!! whee

I tried some rock climbing at camp. They said that my shoes wouldn't work, the other shoes were too big. stare I put my shoes back on & went up that boulder in a few seconds. whee

Yeah, I love hiking too. I didn't know it would be so much fun until bout two years ago. It's the way to enjoy nature and.... it also makes me feel like one with mother earth. I'm thinking to join hiking team when i reach collage

I love to go hiking. One of my favorite places to hike is in the gorge that runs through my campus. It is absolutely amazing down there. A few days ago my friennds and I explored an area of the gorge we had never gone to before. We found this huge canyon. We felt so small in it. I am going to bring my camera next time so that I can get some pics of the area we were in. I also enjoy hiking in a little forset about 20 mins from my house and in the Nittany Mtns when I visit State College, Pa.
