I tend to find that worn, military style clothing and shirts are acceptable. Though where I live anything beyond a tracksuit is considered outlandish and strange.

Fedoras and Paperboy hats IMO fit into acceptable, since a lot of people still wear them regularly. Short sleeve button shirts with vests doesn't seem too outlandish either.

I'm low on the money right now, and I'm looking for a cheap way to express my new lifestyle, without my housemates finding out about it. They are not too fond of my steampunk interests, and I'm looking for something that could work in my favor.

Flowy skirts and broom/peasant skirts can work, and layering them is even more awsome. Also boots with lots of buckles on them that you can find (on clearance) in anystore that sales shoes. Granted people may still look at you funny since wearing skirts are apparently means you're "dressed up" now, but atleast you won't completely freak people out if the need for semi-normalcy arises.

I have blue hair, so I get looks regardless of what I wear, but I stick with vests over neutral colored t-shirts and my goggles when I'm not dressing up. It's long skirts, my miltary jacket (German naval in design) and vests when I am, though.

Personally I feel that you should be able to go all out with steampunk/victorian. It's what I do. I go to stores in casual victorian clothing and when I go somewhere special I bust out the bustled gowns with the shoes, jewelry and everything

I'll just walk around with a bowler, vest, coat, ect and no one ever pays me any mind. Then again, I wore a cape for a while about a month or two back, so people around where I live are probably kinda used to me.

There's one outfit I wear a lot, it's just an old military period style tripp jacket and aviator goggles along with some brown and black corduroy pants and combat boots with some steampunk jewelery. Very casual but still semi steamy.

Even though you can't exactly tell by my avatar, I usually wear an overbust corset every other day. Whereas I got my favorite one as a gift from my SO, I've found places that are rather inexpensive.

(Meaning, for corsets, about $45-$75)

Also, wearing long skirts with many layers, or one with a petticoat with some nice clunky boots works rather well.

Nice steamy goggles are hard to come by (at least in Arizona) and if you're not wanting to shell out the money for welder's goggles I'm not so sure.

And of course, anything with a slightly militarian look will suffice for daily wear, if you don't appreciate the jealous looks. :3

My mother, in all her generous ways, has sent me a rather marvelous late Christmas present.

She had sent me a simple necklace with a leather strap, and a typewriter key with a Q on it. It looks rather old, but I am very very pleased with it.

Oh yeah tell me about it >.< In Arizona I'd be lucky if I could actually find SOMEWHERE that sells me victorian items. Everything I've gotten so far has come from Goodwill lol

GP (general purpose) boots (can be found at your nearest army disposal store) are a very simple long lasting boot that fits very well into steampunk and if laced up tight you can put spats (spatter guards) over the top.

Girls: Go for long flowing skirts that have that scrunched/layered look or 3/4 pants (bracers dangling from the top look spiffy), layer pants under a mini skirt with a belt over the top.
Blouses are always a classic, perhaps with a simple single coloured corset over the top. Female vests, loose lightly coloured tops, jackets, hip/knee/ankle length are good in winter.
A simple chocker or necklace with some bracelets with a pair of goggles finish it off.

Guys: Vests over a dark or light shirt, 3/4 pants or full length pants with boots and spats. Emphasis on PINSTRIPES!!!!! Suits, long coats, fadora hats, a bowler or top hat ocassionally (special occasions perhaps) A cravat (scarf or neck tie) tucked away neatly, some leather cuffs/wristguards, one posing as a watch can hide the alternativeness.
An old watch with the front pulled off (showing the clockwork inside) attached to a chain makes a simple yet somehow pleasing necklace for the men, a couple or rings and you're done.

These can be modified to taste and the weather but their basics.

Enjoy biggrin

pretty much anything goes in seattle these days. i can trod around in my full outfit and people are like "hey! steampunk!" and the bus driver just shrugs and assumes there is another con in town. as long as i don't have like... big brass angel wings poking somebody in the eye, it's all good.
