All of these answers are certainly amusing. i was thinking that there is purposely no answer whatsoever. Its just nonsense like "but it was the best butter" (there are so few good lines in the disney movie im glad they thought of that one). The point of a riddle with no answer is that is it frustrating and confusing. Well atleast if you let it get to you.
Of course the best option is that any answer is correct. I suppose Carrol left it open-ended so that people could guess at the answer but he didn't actually create one. What a lovely joke to play.

I enjoy the general consensus of there being no original answer to the riddle... but I have to say, all of the alternate/possible answers people come up with make me smile. People using their own creativity to integrate their own logic into Carrol's nonsensical world seems, at least to me, like it would have been something that would have amused him. ^_^
Alice_chan10210... that b/n answer took me a long second of staring at to get it, but once I got it, I laughed for a good ten minutes. After making a mental note to cut back on the sugar, I remembered to come back here and thank you for that. What an, excuse my French, smartass answer. XD Love it.

I'm not sure how it is spelled in the states so I'll spell it out the way I heard it on an auction
A:they both have wings! (the "wings" in a writing desk are its shelves or storage units)
special thanks to Caroline O. Park for answering this for me!

Spelled..? Ah, I haven't heard that one before, but that's certainly an interesting answer as well. ^__^
