Saint Crazy S Requiem Marching band isn't hard as long as you're willing to put in the effort. I can be really fun; I say go for it. I don't think you should switch instruments for marching band unless there's a problem with you playing clarinet... Maybe your band needs more of a different instrument, idk. But you'll have plenty of new stuff to learn with marching drill and memorizing music, so I don't think it's a good idea to learn a whole new instrument on top of that.
If you're thinking about jazz band... If you're pretty good at playing keyboard and reading the music, then go ahead and tryout... it can't hurt, right? You could probably learn saxophone somewhat easily, since you're already a reed player. Tenor sax would be a good choice, since clarinet and tenor are in the same key... this DOESN'T make it easier to read either way, but the concert pitches are the same, so each note sounds the same pitch as it would on the clarinet. I'm a flute player, but I'm learning sax, and the hardest part is getting the sound out of it. xD But since you've had a reed instrument already, this shouldn't be so hard. yeah, i guess it wouldn't hurt trying out for the keyboard part. everybody has been telling me (on here) that tenor would be better than alto and stuff like that. but idk if our director will let 7th graders play tenor. i can ask, but if i end up having to buy it, i won't be playing saxophone at all. so i might as well still try out for clarinet for jazz and possibly keyboard smile

PLAY MELLOPHONE/FRENCH HORN! XD
Lol, jaykay, I'm biased. ; D No, a lot of people have been giving good suggestions. If your considering switching, ask what your band director needs. That's how I got to playing French Horn and I ended up loving it. : ) It's always nice for a bit of change. Saxophone is usually the easiest instrument to play (I'm not trying to degrade saxophones or anything, but generally it's easier to make a sound on a saxophone.) Though you'd be written in a different key than clarinet. What is it? Saxophones are in G and clarinets are in...Bb? Forgive me, I'm not a clarinet player. : )
I've heard a lot of good things about jazz band I, myself, have completed my first semester of marching band and fell in LOVE with it. I think bottom line is you just have to put yourself out there. Try new things. If you don't like it, then that's fine, and at least you've learned something. But if you do like it, you'll be grateful you took that chance. You have nothing to lose but sooo much to gain. "There's not a chance unless you take one." : )
So please consider everything, and remember, the decision is all yours. : )

toco clarinet alicelovesjasper4ever toco clarinet i never said i wanted to help you smile and i wasn't questioning her. i was telling her straight out that she was wrong. hey, that's mean. and maybe she isn't wrong. believe me...she's wrong Here toco, i'll explain it. I think what she meant was, the music for trumpet and clarinet are generally written the same way, since they're both pitched in B-flat. (usually. of course there's pretty much a different type of instrument within the family for other keys, like the E-flat clarinet) But you know what I mean, bands usually use B-flat trumpets and B-flat clarinets. Since the music is written the same, that means she could easily make the connection in her head like, "Ok, that's a G so it's open." of course, not to get in a debate with toco.
