How about a ROBOT or something.
I suggest Marvin from H2G2. xd They technically could have met before.

But Marvin is boring. He just stands around complaining and being miserable. He seriously needs a personality upgrade.

How about someone sort of like Sharona from Monk...? She's kinda similar to Donna, but she's not all weepy. Donna cried a lot... That was the only complaint I really had about her. You can be compassionate and empathetic without crying in nearly every episode. And don't get me wrong, I love Donna.
And I don't mean a character that rips off Sharona. Just that personality type. Not afraid to push around her "boss" when he needs it, but also ready to defend him with everything she's got. And supportive without being a doormat. Appreciative of his talents and brilliance, but NOT in love with him of overly in awe of him (*cough*fangirl*cough*). Also, being truly NEEDED by the Doctor. Not just there because... they need a companion for the show. Someone who the Doctor might actually depend on.
Maybe they could make her an alien or at least from some point in the future so she wouldn't be as helpless. They've had alien companions before, though I haven't really seen much of them so I don't know how good they were.
(PS: If you haven't ever watched Monk... DO IT NOW! xd )

As far as I remember the alien companions were more or less human apart from some backstory/knowledge. But yeah, alien/future companions would be cool. Though, if the companion is meant to be someone we can relate to, it might not go over so well, especially with a brand new Doctor...
(( and I've watched Monk a little, and yeah, someone like that could be neat o: ))

That is true. The flaw in my idea, heheh. They could always have more than one companion. They've done that before, too. But then again, Romana is one of the most popular companions and she was not just an alien or from the future, she was actually a Time Lady. The Doctor's equal, practically. She was younger than him, and thus less experienced, but they had much of the same knowledge and nearly the same level of intelligence, at least.

I want a male companion! (And not just for the slashiness. I mean, if I see ANOTHER companion fall in love with the Doctor in the show, I will kill someone.)
So, a male companion, fairly closed-minded and extremely rational, but believes in the Doctor's doctrine of No Violence. And then they pretty much bicker all the way through time and space. It gets in the way of saving the day, but I would enjoy it. =)

Lady Saxon, I love your idea. 3nodding That would be a great companion.
I can't come up with my own at the mo' because I'm stuck on automatic, but no problem. XD I'm not that creative a type anyway, though.
