All "adventure" based romance novels i've come across are pretty much bastardisations of The Sheik, and - since all romance novels are the same story told over and over again (i kid you not - there are rules for how those things are supposed to be written) - i have come to the unfortunate conclusion that The Sheik is the predecessor to all modern romance novels. gonk

Poor book. u.u

I may just be biased, but i think everyone should read "The Sheik" by E.M. Hull. If you can get ahold of it, that is...it's pretty obscure.

It was first published in around 1918, banned as pornography, then re-released in 1921 after the release of the (silent) movie by the same name, starring the wildly popular Italian actor (and first real movie celebrity) Rudolph Valentino. (warning: large image)

It's a really good book, especially considering the time in which it was written. Unlike the movie, which was fluff even for the '20s (but still totally worth watching xD ), The Sheik is far ahead of its time, and i would warn younger readers to read it at their own discretion. There's nothing directly graphic in it at all, but there are things implied within it that still disturb me as an 18-year-old.

Nevertheless, it remains one of my favorite books. I absolutely despised the main character, Diana, in the movie, because she came across as a stuck-up snivelling damsel-in-distress. In the book, however, I thought she made a more realistic and powerful protagonist than any I've read in most modern stories.

Hmm... I've seen that actor, in that costuming... but in a non-silent movie... er... I think it was a non-silent movie. as of right now, my mind is tuning out. Oh the greatnesses of 1 houred sleep.

The Sheik is about a rich English girl by the name of Diana Mayo, who is a complete and utter tomboy. She's very beautiful, very tough, and very over-confident. She is constantly bombarded by suitors, and she coldly dismisses each and every one of them. Her late father was a famous poet, which - combined with her scandalous behavior - makes very famous.

The story starts out in Biskra, the night before her scheduled trip out into the desert... alone!! (The thirty or so Arab servants and guides don't count, of course). Diana ignores even her own brother's pleas for her not to go, confident that she can handle any dangers that come her way.

Then, on her first night out into the desert, her caravan is attacked and she is kidnapped by... the Sheik.

ninja I shall say no more.

[edit]Holy crap! I just found the whole book online in .txt format...!! ='D

TwT I love you ix.
why? cause I was looking in the library for the book since I'm stranded here and the store is not open >o< erm.. and then I went on gaia to make sure I got the name right, which I did, and still couldnt find it, and then I read that you found it online >3 yay~~ though I'll still probably buy it cause I dont want to read it on the computer *is picky x_X*

Oh and, I dont think the movie I refered to is the book? x_X; I'll ask my friend or check the film room once I'm back in school.

It can't possibly be Rudolph Valentino, because a)he had a ragingly thick Italian accent, so he probably wouldn't have made it in talkies even if he hadn't b)died of an infection after (an otherwise successful) stomach surgery when he was just 31.

...and how do i know he had a thick accent if he only appeared in talkies...? ninja Well, let's just say that i happen to have one of two sounds clips of his voice in the entire world. >w< not the original, of course. Just an .m4a file. heart But still. Special.

*a-hem* Paaale hands i loooooved, be-sidea the Shalimaa-aar... Wheeere are-a you now who lies-a be-neeeeeetha your spweeeella.... *

I had to look up the words to even tell it was English. rofl

Oh, and good luck finding it, Shiva. ;-; I'm pretty sure it was out of print until fairly recently. I'd recommend looking online if you can - i found my first copy for just a couple bucks on e-bay. 3nodding

I think most people are that way. Thus why e-books never took off.

If I can just make a recommendation...

The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop:
~Daughter of the Blood
~Heir to the Shadows
~Queen of the Darkness

I'm not entirely sure whether or not I can give a good description... but I can say I got into them pretty quickly. They're fairly good-sized books, and I finished them in three days. One right after another. Couldn't put them down.
'Twas a very good series, I think. sweatdrop

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHH! I agree!!!!! Best books EVAH!! [inhale] They're how Mel and I became friends! *huggles Mel*
