Honestly, I dont really know if would like living in Japan. But I know I would really love the opportunity to find out xd
My husband lived there for a year as an exchange student. He loved it. He was waaay up north in Akita and athough he said he was kind of lonely (he's pretty introverted even here though) he said it was realyl fantastic and he would have gone back...but I "caught" him before he could. Yay for me! =P
Anyway, I'm sure that if we were to live there, there would be many things I didn't expect or were weird or creepy... But here's how I see it. Every country has problems, and each one has a different set. I'm pretty disillusioned right now with the current set of problems in this country. I dont know if they're better or worse than Japan or any other comparable country*, but I do know they're different. And I'm ready for a change. It's like when you've sat too long on one spot and your butt really hurts there, so you shift your weight around to get more comfortable. The chair/bench etc. itself hasn't suddenly become more comfortable, you're just giving the sore spot a rest and finding a different spot to use for a while.
((*as an aside, I have had loads of people spit back at me that if I dont like America, I should go live in Iraq or Saudi Arabia or Ethiopia or some other place like that and see how I like it. That is a stupid ignorant thing to say. I will never think that America is THE worst country, even by a long shot... In fact, considering every country in the world, I dont even think it is anywhere near the middle... But just because it is not the crappiest place on Earth or even the half-crpapiest place on Earth, doesn't mean I dont have the right to be annoyed with it and want a change. I keep my comparisons to first world, developed countries because they are, at a base level, the same in terms of living conditions...apples to apples.))

I would like to live there but like everyone else has already said it is expensive , stuff costs a lot so I wouldn't be ablte to pay for much except food and housing , and I'd have to work two jobs or get a job that pays a lot .
However it is really beautiful and I would love to live there and be able to celebrate the wonderful festivals and look at Nature as it should be out there

Yeah, Probably. Not in Tokyo, though. Maybe Kyoto or Osaka. Or in the country.

It is expenisve, but the crime rate is so low. Apparently it's gone up a tad because of the groups who are trying to be more American. That's what I've heard anyway.

Hikari.S It's interesting how people can look at something outside their normal area of living/thinking and judge it when the very same thing goes on all around them. People get so immune to the "wrongs" in their own soceity but can see them clearly in someone else's. Everyone should take a few minutes to research their own country with the same style and voracity as other countries before they comment. I bet if a Japanese person read about things that go in in NYC, LA, Las Vegas etc, they would be horrified. But that doesn't mean that living in America as a whole is even 1% similar. You can find shocking/defiling/horrid things in every society. But because we look the other way in our own society, it has so much more impact when we are confronted with the same thing from the "outside". its really good that u mantain such an indifferent perspective. I can definitely appreciate that. surprised I suppose anything pertaining to another country originally created by the U.S. would typically make a different country look more seedy and disturbing than THEY are. stare That's why it's so important to be able to see thru the crap intentionally put out for you to take note of in order to figure out how to get to die-hard facts.

Now I'm even MORE cautious about going to Japan! xp

Japan is a great place to vacation (all the sights and places of historical significance are but a train ride away!) and in my opinion would be a nice place to live. Sure you'd feel like an outsider but you eventually get used to it. I'm only basing this on my one year there...but I'd still give living there a try without a second thought. biggrin
Also, there's wierd stuff everywhere (as many before me have said). It doesn't really matter as long as you dont give it too much attention. Kinda like how you're living now. There are many strange things you wont even know about unless you really go out of your way to find them. You'd never see them otherwise.

The most disturbing thing I've ever heard about was bukkake(which I will not explain, but if you must know do a wikipedia search). Not much worse than the states.

I totally agree with you there, and even though america is a pretty good place, there are some laws that i sorely disagree with (I live in america, more specifically, Oregon) and I'm just a japanese nut, and there are so many things that america could learn from other countrys...

I would love to go there for a vacation because the natural sights seem so lovely and also I would love to visit temples and other things. I know there are some creepy things but you have to understand the good with the bad to truely appreciate things.
