"I imagine she'd slap me." He sat forward, elbows on his desk, suddenly feeling as if he'd made a mistake, talking to Rory.

"Sir, if you keep thinkin' like tha', you ain't e'er gonna be happy in this marriage again. You two loved each other quite a bit once. I mean, Lee's proof o' tha'. Why'd you two get married in the first place? Tha's a good start t' tryin' t' sort out what t' say t' her now," Rory said, giving a slight shrug.

Mr. Katan gave a slightly hurt look at the boy's question, though did a relatively good job of masking his emotions. "I'm not sure she married me for the same reasons, though. Not for money, she's always had plenty of that, but... I've been wondering if perhaps her involvement with me was simply to further her career." Oh, it stung. But this was the first time he'd voiced that feeling he'd had for so many years. His own feelings made it difficult to care whether or not Rory wanted to be here, if the boy wanted to help or not, and he instead continued to speak. "It wouldn't be unusual, I suppose. Actresses do what they need to to get ahead in a competitive field like that..."

"I didnae know she wis an actress," Rory said, tilting his head a little. He mulled it over and sighed. "I think you might just need t' ask her if she loves you. Gettin' her t' realize her own feelin's will help a lot in rekindlin' th' flame." He stretched out his legs. "Gotta ask, though, why you're wantin' me help in this. I ain't been in a relationship outside o' tha' wi' your daughter."

"Was, yes." Not anymore. As for asking her directly, he was almost sure her answer would be "no", even if she did love him. Love was a weak emotion, and he was sure she'd never admit to such a thing. Setting his hands on the arms of his chair and looking down at his desk, he wasn't sure how to answer Rory's question without looking as pathetic as he was. "You are with Lee where I want to be with my wife. I wouldn't be asking for your help with something I knew you were inexperienced about. You seem to know about making Lee happy." What a terrible thing to say, as her father. This really was a humiliating moment for him, but he needed help.

Rory laughed. "Ain't hard t' make her happy. She loves sweets an' th' color red an' her favorite flower is a rose," the boy rambled off, smiling a bit as his eyes focused more on a mental image of his lover rather than the ceiling he was looking up at. "She adores shoppin' an' sleepin' in late an' she very much wants t' know she's loved an' appreciated." He looked at Mr. Katan. "Complicated an' complex. Tha's what women are. They want us t' please them, but they want us t' already know how wi'out bein' told. It's as easy as just talkin' an' listenin' t' her t' figure out what she enjoys. Works in bed, too. Communication's a big part o' it, sir. You hae t' be willin' t' not only talk t' your lover, but listen t' her as well. An' touchin'. E'en th' smallest bit o' contact can hae a big result."

Mr. Katan cocked an eyebrow, giving the boy a look of disbelief. How on Drente had Rory manged to gather this much about women in his short sixteen years? He also didn't understand how Rory could talk about potential "old people sex" so easily and not be disgusted. "You really think she'd go for that? The... touching part." Even holding her hand seemed so forward at this point. He knew enough about his wife, knew her favorites, all of that. He couldn't help but learn after almost thirty years of being with someone. But he didn't know what to do with that information like Rory did, didn't know that knowing those things could make her happy.

"You e'er just touch her hand or arm 'cause you simply want tha' connection, to know she's there an' hae her know you're there, too? Or gi' her a bouquet o' her favorite flowers. Okay, like I know how Lee's favorite fruit is strawberries, so I planted some in wor garden at home so she could hae fresh ones whene'er she wanted, provided they're in season. I also know she really loves chocolate, so a gift o' chocolate-covered strawberries is definitely gonna get me some kisses an' a very happy Lee," Rory explained, moving to sit forward a bit. "It's th' little things tha' really add up, like when I made Lee th' rose ice cream. I know I made enough fae you an' Mrs. Katan last night, but tha' dinner wis fae Lee because I know she loves me cookin' an' I love t' cook fae her."

The man blinked, nodding a bit with understanding -- or what he thought was understanding. "Gifts, then? I can do that..." But couldn't she buy those things on her own? What if he bought the wrong thing? It seemed more practical to just hand her the money so she could buy it for herself. Either way, he'd try it. He wasn't sure this would work. They were already set into a routine of not touching each other, not speaking unless there was something specific to say, and not doing one another favors. She'd find it odd, uncomfortable for him to do these things, right? He hoped not.

"Gifts is part o' it," Rory said, brow furrowing a bit. "I mean, surprisin' her wi' somethin' nice tha' you know she likes shows you appreciate her, but you donnae always hae t' buy stuff fae her. Sometimes it's just as simple as a compliment or just tellin' her you love her. This'd be a lot easier if Lee were here. Then you could just learn by observation."

"Perhaps when she gets back you could give me another lesson." The man chuckled, in a bit of a better mood now that he thought he knew what he was doing. It would be difficult, and rather scary, knowing his wife, but he'd have to try. "It's our anniversary soon. That's why I bother to ask. We haven't really celebrated it for a while now, but... I think it would be nice to give some of these things you're suggesting a try before I attempt any sort of celebration." Honestly, he wasn't sure she even remembered the date was coming up, but he was determined not to ignore it like every other year.

"You know, sir, this apparent loveless marriage is a lot o' why Lee has issues," Rory said softly. "Your wife said w' donnae argue, but tha' ain't always true. Lee's just not confrontational. She tends t' shut down sometimes an' other times, it feels like she's desperately seekin' me approval."

Mr. Katan blinked, a bit confused. Why would Rory want Lee arguing with him? It didn't make sense to the man. "Is that a bad thing? You want her to be confrontational?" He blinked again. "I think she might just take after me, with both issues." Luckily for Lee, she had a partner that actually did approve of her.

"Well, it ain't tha' I wanna argue wi' her all th' time. A few fights are good fae th' make-up sex later, but too much an' no one's happy. I just . . . I guess I want her t' stand up fae herself more," Rory sighed, and by his expression it was easy to tell he was starting to miss the girl's presence.

Mr. Katan sat silent for a moment, wondering, for a fleeting second, if standing up for himself would make his own wife love him more. "Have you spoken to Lee about it? Not the... make-up sex part, standing up for herself..." He frowned a bit at his own words, not liking the reminder of how much Rory enjoyed such things with his daughter.
