Xagarath Ankor Doctor Who. Christmas. Special. I will see it, one way or another. I'll be videoing it in Bristol, just in case the family insists I talk to them at teatime on Christmas Day. But hopefully they'll know better than that... DW (no, not Dr Who wink )

So... What did those people who managed to see The Christmas Invasion think of it?
I'll save my own reaction until I see whether or not anyone else is actuallyu interested.

Nuala So... What did those people who managed to see The Christmas Invasion think of it? I'll save my own reaction until I see whether or not anyone else is actuallyu interested. I've already told you mine- quite enjoyable, fairly pantomime-ish rather than serious drama, and not enough Tennant. It wasn't bad, but compared to some of the stuff the new series has managed to pull off, I can't help feeling it was a little unstructured... On the other hand, t'was christmassy. This worked well.

After seeing what we saw at Christmas, I'm looking forward to seeing more of Tennant's portrayal of the character. In the way that he ended that challenge and the way that he dealt with Harriet Jones afterwards, that's a far darker, more menacing Doctor than we usually see.

And reminded me of Colin Baker's trying to strangle his assistant. Since I have a soft spot for Colin's sixth Doctor, this is a good thing...

I loved the Christmas Invasion! Wasn't sure about Mr Tennant to begin with - after all, I've only just got used to Mr Eccleston (I think the "Are you my mummy?" episode cemented him in the role for me - yet I still pine for Mr McCoy smile ). He was, however, great in the scenes in which he appeared. My brother thought I was nuts as I was having a giggling fit in the corner over the "Circle of Life" speech.
He definitely seems somewhat darker and his 6 little words to bring down the PM were great. Amazingly, Billie Piper is still not annoying me smile
I was worried that the political messages were going to drown the episode, but they weren't too bad in the end. I still prefer the "massive weapons of destruction" speech in the first season though...
I'm looking forward to the next series, but curse you BBC for showing trailers and then telling me I'll have to wait months again! It's almost as bad as showing trailers for the Xmas Invasion in JULY! *grumbles*
Meanwhile, a friend of mine managed to find and acquire for me *20* New Adventures books with the Doctor and Ace/Bernice, so that should at least keep my Doctor quotient up for a bit biggrin biggrin biggrin

Warnersister He definitely seems somewhat darker and his 6 little words to bring down the PM were great. Amazingly, Billie Piper is still not annoying me smile "Rose ex machina" is still annoying the heck out of me, though. After the ending of the last series and having about fifteen minutes of Tennant in the special, I'm still wondering why the don't just retitle thew series and have done with it. Quote: I was worried that the political messages were going to drown the episode, but they weren't too bad in the end. I still prefer the "massive weapons of destruction" speech in the first season though... I'm still in shock that the BBC passed that whole "weapons of destruction"/"45 seconds" speech for screening so close to the general election, after even Ace Rimmer was cancelled during the last campaign. I did approve of "You can tell the President - and please use these exact words...", though - that was one of the things that made the reversal with Harriet and the Doctor at the end such a surprise.

It is, of course, worth bearing in mind that the Daleks pushed the Election off the front page of the Radio Times.... Which amused me.

I can't say that I'm particularly shocked. More people voted in the last series of Big Brother than the last general election - and we both know that the BBC's such a populism/publicity whore that it'll cover anything that gets it revenue rather than actually fulfil its remit.

There's some new casting news for Torchwood. Is anyone else looking forward to this? I was just overjoyed to see John Barrowman as Captain Jack in Doctor Who in the first place - he's been underappreciated on the theatre circuit for years.

I had thought it would be tiding us over till the next series of Doctor Who, but my Who-mad friend put me right. Seems like we'll have to wait rather a long time. Can't wait for the new series, though I could do without Rose... DW
