I had heard of Hetalia a good few months before the anime was actually released. There was fan art of the characters/pairings uploaded on this site I go on, and I saved some of the cute ones. But I didn't really put much thought into it.
When the anime came out, I figured I'd take a peek at it since I had heard of it. I thought "Aww, this is great, it's a neat concept.".
And then...
I read the manga strips. And realized how awesome some of the fanbase is (not all, but some).
:] Obsession time.

I started liking Hetalia right after I finished watching all of Bleach.(Not really xp )And I was watching something called Ulquiorra's tomato song, which was actually Romano's tomato song.Long ago,I had no idea what the heck the tomato song was!The description had said that it was from Hetalia,so I looked for it on youtube, and sure enough, the anime was there.Since then,I've been watching the anime [iand reading the anime!

I found out about Hetalia pretty late (this june), but has been addicted since watching the first episode. I've read most of the comics off of live journal and loved it even more 3nodding

imacashew I think I started to get into it about a week or two before the anime came out. I searched everywhere for the comics...it was a tedious task, but SO WORTH IT. Same thing with me, though I found maybe a handful of random strips on the internet before finding the big LJ forum full of them.

I've always been in love with WWI&II era because of my dad. Then about... Last July I think, as in 08, I saw a picture on 4chan. It was of Germany and they said it was Germany. My first thought was "...What?". So I promptly googled 'Hetalia' and found the comm when they only had like a few strips up XD I loved Germany because I'm thickly-German (other half Welsh). Then I think around the time of the Bloody Sunday strip and Liet's Outsourcing, I fell in love with two cultures I knew little about. I knew about Russia because of WWII but the character Ivan really pulled me in. Though I studied the Baltics more, and my rp partner (an Ivan) and I used to geek out for hours... about history. XD
So ah, before the anime is the short answer. XD

Before the anime, though I do watch the anime now and then, too. I like to blame my friend in Singapore because he frequently says to me, "OMG, look at this!" Then we both end up with new obsessions. blaugh
