Favorite Artists: The Decemberists- Folk-Indie-Alternative joy. I get my ballad fix with accordion rock and a little bit of political satire.
The Dresden Dolls- I've got such a girlcrush on them. Both members. Their live shows are dynamic. Brian Viglione's drumming has a lot of force behind it, and Amanda Palmer's innovative playing gives them a unique sound. Brechtian cabaret forever!
Modest Mouse- heart Wild guitar riffs? Intense poetic rhythm? They sound like nothing else, and I love it.
I don't have any other artists I listen to consistently.
Favorite Songs (right now): Flogging Molly, "Devil's Dance Floor" (go listen to it right now!!)
Modest Mouse, "King Rat," "Whale Song," "History Sticks To Your Feet"
Dashboard Confessional, "El Scorcho (cover)"
Mika, "Grace Kelly"
Coheed & Cambria, "Welcome Home"

favorite bands/artists
mastodon. they devoted an entire album to the story of moby d**k and it's ******** rad. also the guitar. oh my god the guitar.
muse because they're fun and cool and definitely perfect for driving around on a sunny day with the windows rolled down. <3
Dr. Steel because, seriously, it's ******** Dr. Steel. i'm down with building a utopian playland.
idk if i can really list epica as a favorite band yet because i only found them the other day, but i love love love their stuff so far. the singer has the voice of a ******** angel. back it up with leet guitars and drums and s**t and ohmahgawd i just came.
i also like tool a lot. their sound is kind of pretentious at times which is annoying, but overall their stuff is quality.

Let's play a game. I list these, and you guess which ones I'm not very proud of. xd
ARTISTS -
Doctor Steel: ...As Tedie said, he's ******** Doctor Steel. I joined the Toy Soldiers last week and everything, and actually intend to be reasonably active. DOCTOR STEEL FOR WORLD EMPEROR. Not to mention the balance of operatic madness, industrial, folky elements and rockin' lyrics just clicks in perfectly.
t.A.T.u.: Well. Goddamn. I'm usually not one for poppy dancy stuff, and didn't think much of their most well-known song, but I was listening to their first album and I was unexpectedly blown away. They're REALLY good on that. Their lyrics and videos are both pretty sweet too, the former playing around with the forbidden love angle a lot, and the latter totally gunning for controversy every time. Plus hell, Yulia was REALLY cute in her mid-to-late teens. I'm a sucker for little girls with good voices, what can I say?
Porcupine Tree: I honestly think Porcupine Tree are one of the best bands out there these days. They just slide from soft acoustic passages to lengthy prog-rock ambient solos to hard-edged pseudo-metal guitar rape so smoothly and easily. Combine that with Wilson's usually nostalgic or evocative lyrics and you've got a clear recipe for success. Have tickets to see them in December. Whoo!
Modest Mouse: I won't say too much here, as from skimming the thread I know perfectly well a lot of you appreciate them as much as me. But let me just reiterate: That. Guitar. Those. Vocals. Of course, being the band who wrote possibly one of my most simultaneously sentimentally precious and fitting songs doesn't hurt either. Seeing THEM in December too, the night before PT. Double whoo!
Angelspit: Definitely one of my guilty pleasures, purely for their aggressive lyrics and cyberpunk/cybergoth image. There's something sickly satisfying about sitting in a Catholic school's religious studies class while listening to "I am beyond God, I am human, I am the razor blade on the communion tray." They're pretty win too, nice mix of EBM and industrial elements. Gotta love it.
SONGS - Nearly all of these have sentimental value to me one way or another. I'm a big softie.
Modest Mouse, Dramamine - Reminds me of someone I care about, soothes me when I'm feeling depressed, colours my pleasant evenings and describes some of my Saturday nights. I'd be a fool NOT to like it.
t.A.T.u., How Soon Is Now? - May fans of the Smiths feel free to nerd rage in the corner at which version I prefer. But honestly, this song is me summed up in a couple of verses, and the duo's delivery is just so heartfelt and energetic that I can't do anything but adore it. Definitely one of my favourite covers in recent memory.
Porcupine Tree, Time Flies/Last Chance to Evacuate - A pair of songs that earn a lot of adoration for having sentimental value. Both remind me of better times from when I was younger, both are upbeat and acoustic with PT's signature prog-metal undertones, and both are magnificent examples of what the band is best at. Bravo, I say.
Mogwai, Mogwai Fear Satan - This. Is. BEAUTIFUL. It's like love itself condensed into sixteen minutes of cautiously optimistic postrock splendour. I demand that you listen to it. In fact, I demand you listen to ALL of these.
The Beatles, Tomorrow Never Knows - If I had to try and match my philosophy on life to one single song, it would be this. Everything from the experimental-at-the-time instrumentation, the mystical lyrics borrowed liberally from Timothy Leary's extrapolation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead, to the sheer depth of the message it puts across to just chill the ******** out and realise that life is awesome, death ain't so bad, and there's no point in worry or fear.
...I wrote a bit, didn't I?
