Alba listened to his perspective with interest, a sense of empathy building up from within her. It must be difficult to work with others when the others don't particularly want to work with you, and stick you into something that they know of more comfortably. She can only merely glimpse at the sort of frustration that would cause for someone. "My dad plays guitar. Nothing fancy or anything, but he does have this really nice way of plucking at the strings individually to produce beautiful melodies and harmonies...I mean, he knew how to strum and all too, but his...picking string by string was my favorite."

It was definitely one of the things she missed most about not being with her parents anymore, was their love of music that she could partake by sharing.

She nearly chocked in surprise his next question. "M-...me? Play the lyre?! I mean, dad tried to teach me how to play guitar but it didn'tworkouttoowellandwellthatisalyrewhichisdifferentwouldn'tIbreakstringsand..." She droned her voice into a shy mumble. "Um....are you sure you're okay with that?" She's itching to get her hands on the instrument and try her own plunking of the strings, however, she faced a conundrum between doing what she wants and doing what was best for him and his instrument that she will hopefully never accidentally break.

"I wouldn't worry about it too much. The stings are pretty new and I tuned it this morning. Besides, if it breaks, I get a 'pass class' card. They don't have any spares." He smiled at the last bit, almost hoping to be able to avoid the fact he did have band tomorrow. With a light shug, Marlo pushed the lyre further at her.
"Sit down and I'll show you, well, tell you really. It's kinda hard so..Don't expect to get it the first time." He noticed that he was surrounded by grass and well...Pulling his sweater off, he placed it on the grass and motioned for her to sit. He liked to teach people, even if it was about such trivial things.
"The main thing to remember is not to strum, but to pluck."

"Well....if you're alright with it..." A tiny surge of excitement tingled all over her body with the idea of learning to play an instrument, and not just any instrument, but a lyre. Maybe it will be different from her failed attempts of guitar sessions with her father.

She walked closer and, with a "thank you!", sat on the offered sweater, happy to not be getting grass stains on her new long skirt. She carefully picked the lyre up and held it with the best imitation of Marlo that she could remember, and very tentatively, plucked each one of the strings lightly. "Like this?"

Nodding he held up his arms in an odd fashion, rather, in the proper placement. "One hand is behind, resting just below the strings, and it's also the arm the lyre rest on. The other is freely able to move and pluck the strings. Just like you did." He reached over, trying not to get too close and invade her space. His hand over the lyre, he plucked the nearest string quite harshly, almost as if he wanted to break it.

"Now, if you do as I just did, you notice that the note is, naturally, longer. But when you begin to play, and you accidentally pluck the string to hard, you're stuck. It's difficult to re-pluck the string and keep the music flowing. So, this is where your hand in the back below the strings comes in handy. Reach up with your thumb and hold the string. This will stop the note and allow you to continue playing." He waved a hand at her. "Try it."

She began to move her arms carefully (so as not to drop the lyre!) in the way that he directed them to, and immediately felt the difference of a properly held instrument as opposed to what she was doing previously. It certainly was more comfortable, and she was less anxious about potentially dropping it, since she had a more secured hold on to it. When Marlo reached to pluck the string, Alba had to suppress a wince; that was indeed a harsh tug!

"That certainly makes sense..." She stated, and attempted to do what he demonstrated, though quickly reached with her other fingers to stop the note from continuing to hum. "Like that?"
PostPosted: Wed Sep 16, 2009 1:13 pm

"Yes. You just have to be careful as to not allow your fingers to rest on the strings. Otherwise, the note will be cut short." He crosses his arms and scooted so her was sitting in front of her. "It's all about coordination. One hand with the other. If you focus to much on what one hand is doing, you loose track of the other and then the whole thing can fall apart." He motioned for her to try. "Just go with what you feel is good. I'm not expecting anything amazing. On my first try, I ended up braking a string." Not to mention half of the frame. But, Marlo wasn't about to let her know that fun fact.

"Wow! You must have really plucked at it to break it, I'm having a hard time mustering up courage to even do it as hard as you did now....I would feel so bad if I broke anything!" She continued to practice what Marlo directed for her to do, very much hoping that indeed, she doesn't drop the lyre, break a string, or mysteriously caused it to spontaneously combust with the touch of her hands. "Is it difficult to find parts for it? It's such an obscure instrument...I mean, not many people play it, so parts wouldn't be very big in the music market, right?"
PostPosted: Sun Sep 20, 2009 2:21 pm

"Trust me, it takes alot to brake it. I...well, I accidentally broke my first lyre by trying to pluck the sting as hard as I could. Ended up snapping the thing in half." He brushed his bangs out from his eyes. He had be 13 and bored. Apparently the combination led to him being a bit destructive. Good times, fond memories.
Her question was a bit of an odd one. Most people rather wanted to know history rather then maintenance. But hey, it was nice to have company today. "It's not that hard. I can get most of my stuff online. I just have to make sure that the dealer reliable and all that. But for the most part, its not as hard as it could be." He shrugged, as he had never paid much mind to the cost of maintenance for the lyre. If he did, he'd probably not allow anyone to touch it.

Alba's sharp little eyebrows shot upward when he mentioned the instrument breaking at a single pluck. "Haha, and I thought just breaking the string was enough force! Though it's good that it's not difficult for you to find parts and supplies...I'm sure this would be a different situation entirely if they weren't." While giving him a small grin, she nudged the lyre back towards his hands. "Thank you very much for this short lesson, I really enjoyed it!"

She wondered if there was anything she could do in return to make up for any lost time she may have caused. She wasn't sure if boys enjoyed wearing bracelets or necklaces, provided that they were manly enough, of course, or if he'd like a sketch....

"I'd love to make it up to you, interrupting your alone musical time and all. Do you like drawings, or manly jewelry of any kind..?" Err, well, that sounded positively retarded. "Or maybe I can treat you to lunch some time!"

As she handed Marlo back his lyre, he felt a bit disappointed she hadn't tried to play it, not really. But, still, better then having her accidentally breaking it. Idly, he rubbed his hands along the frame, enjoying the feel of it. "It was my pleasure." As he began to put the lyre back in it's case, she made offers to 'pay him back'. For what? Giving him enjoyable company? How absurd!

"I don't need anything from you. It was just nice to have such good company. " The offer of lunch however..."But I'd enjoy seeing you again. Perhaps over a lunch like you said." Not that he'd let her pay for his meal. He'd just like some company other then his brother time to time.

"Sounds good to me!" She agreed, glad to hear that she didn't actually bother him throughout the entire 'teaching' session. "To be honest, I'm actually rather new here, so I don't really know where there are any good places to eat. I've been staying near the academy and keeping myself too busy to do much. Today was my first time out since I got here!"

"Do you recommend anywhere?" She asked. "I'm pretty much open to anything, there are few things I won't eat."

"Academy? So you're a crystal girl then?" Maybe it was best not to mention his school. "That's cool. A few blocks down is a nice cafe that serves a good variety of lunch sandwiches and soups. Or, down in the mall are the generic food places from 'Around the World.' If you can ignore the fat content that is." Standing, he brushed his pants out of habit, even thought they were clean. "Do you want my number or the other way around?"

Alba hesitated for a second, just then remembering the instances of where she felt a bit of hostility between the students she was talking to at the Crystal Academy when she questioned about other schools in Destiny City. Obviously Marlo doesn't go to the Academy, as he lacks the certain genitalia that is needed in order to attend, so the question that was beginning to quirk its way around her mind was this: do other students feel the same way towards Crystal Academy, and is this new potential friend one of them?

Well, there was only one to find out, she supposed.

"Yes, this is my first year. Crystal Academy was the only school that provided boarding, and according to my parents it had an impressive curriculum and teachers, so it was settled." She gave a half smile, remembering the conversation she had had with her mom as though it were only yesterday. "I feel a little...I don't know, I get along with people okay, but sometimes I feel like there's some kind of big competition going on that I'm not exactly apart of or even fully aware at times. I mean, friendly competition is one thing, but a lot of girls really go out of their way to keep to themselves, and that's, well, boring! Not too mention sometimes rude."

"Look at me! You must think I'm just weird," She laughed, albeit more nervously than she intended it to be. "Do you go to school around here as well? And that Cafe sounds really good, I'm not much for uh...those generic food stuffs. They always taste strange and nothing like the real thing."

She had evaded the question of phone numbers. Eh, he'd get over it. Plus, she seemed to have her mind elsewhere. "Some of girls are nutters. At least, they act like it towards anything possibly male. You'd think they'd want to have a boyfriend fussing over them, but, no, they just freak out and claim that boys will them STDs...through a handshake." He was dead serious. Some girl had honestly though he was going to give her an STD via a handshake. Crazy chick.
"And you're not weird." He smiled. "Just diffrent then many of your peers. nothing wrong with that. I'm full time up the hill, but...eh. What can you do?" Her interest in the cafe over mall food was nice. Further proof she had taste. "How about nest week around noon? It's the Sweet Pea cafe. A bit...feminine, but they have very good pastries."

It wasn't that she had forgotten the business of phone numbers, she just wanted to wait until they had agreed on a place before taking her phone number out (especially when they're still conversing over the matters of school and crazy female students). She was a bit surprised to hear about his incident, though more perplexed on the mere thought of a girl honestly believing that. She sincerely hoped (for the good of man-kind) that the girl in question was just trying to make an excuse on the fly to not touch his hand, albeit a very bad one.

"That's pretty awful," She agreed, "Luckily, I haven't met anyone with that sort of, uh, knowledge. Hopefully I won't ever have to. I don't think I'd be able to quite make it."

"The Sweet Pea Cafe? I think I might have seen that before, it certainly sounds enticing! Love the name." Alba certainly enjoyed the appeal of a cute, nearby cafe with a nice feminine touch, and (hopefully) wholesome, healthy food. "I don't really mind feminine, as long as you don't. When would you be free...?" Ah, finally, someone to put into her phone that she didn't live with! As she was saying her last words, she reached into her tote bag to take out her old, but still working cell-phone.

(I think it'd be pretty fantastic and hilarious if they were to do this after the panty raid when she had already encountered Elzo, what say you? X) )
