I think movies are for people who don't want to waste their time reading the book so they watch the movie to know the general idea. Well, that's what I do, anyways. Almost always though, the book is DEFINITELY better than the movie. REALLY good books should never be made into a movie and give it a bad impression on people who haven't read it before. >.>

...birds creep over tin roofs, like criminals with tap shoes...
I Hear Thunder

To watch a movie, and claim to know everything about a book is absurd. And the other way around too.

I love the lord of the rings movies, absolutely beautiful, but the books tell a few stories that doesn't have a place in the movies, and that is quite a shame. At the same time i understand that not all of a book can be crammed into a few hours of movie.

I try to separate books and movies, to watch them as two different things, with little or no connection with each other, makes me a happier person.

But sometimes its a wonderful thing to see those characters i think i know so well, in a movie, someone is trying their best to show their interpretation of that character.

@fikeyfikey: I dont think any book is a waste of time.

I was disgusted with Eragon. It hardly resembles the book, and it just ruined everything.
On that line of thought, does anyone know why Saphira looks more like an opaque blue bird than a deep saphire dragon with SCALES not wings?

I think Blood and Chocolate was a horrible movie. I read the book years ago and i was so excited to see it come to the screen but no.. the changed the whole thing.
I liked Howl's Moving Castle a lot.
I haven't read or seen Eragon. As for Harry Potter..well , i don't really care for the books or the movies.

Has anyone here seen "The Grandfather"? It's actually based on a book.

I've both read and seen Eragon, as well as Twilight, and as far as I'm concerned they're all equally bad.
Howl's Moving Castle was wonderful. As expected of Miyazaki.
I think the attempt to put all the harry potter movies on the big screen could be compared to pushing playdough through a seive - it gets messy.
I thought "Spiderwick chronacles" and "How to train a dragon" made wonderful stand-alone movies, although I can't say I've read the books.
I look forward to watching the movie adaptation of Guardians of Ga'hoole.

I'd agree with Tebasile there, and treat books and movies separately. It'd be fantastic if a movie accurately represents the book, but if the movie can stand on its own well enough I'm happy.

If books are made into movie you have to take into account who is directing in, producing it and who will they hire to star in it. when making a book into a movie it is a serious gamble on both ends really. The movie can bomb and if there is some up and coming actor in that movie then this can stain their career on the book side if someone never read the book they may never want to or if some on who has read the book the movie probably ruin the books for them. So when you make a book into a movie its really a gamble

some of my favorite books that have been made into movies are
interview with a vampire, queen of the damned, Twilight(yep) and there is one more but i can't remember it.

I would say that most book adaptations of the movies are pretty bad and they stray from the original story too much...however, there are exceptions. I've always thought that most of the Harry Potter movies haven't been bad at all, and Cirque Du Freak was good.
