Nice Alvinette! xd I went and bought up several alcohol items when they first made the announcement just in case. I hate censorship, and I shudder to think that Gaia will drop to being like Neopets. I'm happy to see so much of Gaia supporting our cause for freedom of expression.
Good news! I saw in the GCD where someone posted a PM from Lanzer. He said that he was surprised about the annoucement and it try to get the tobacco items back. However, I am worried about whether or not that PM was false, and I worry about Lanzer's level of power on Gaia now that it is corporate.

I worry about Lanzer's waning power, too. Not just because things always seem to go down hill when the original creator loses creative control of his brainchild but because it affects the whole Gaia community in the process. sad
EDIT: On second thought, those are the same to reasons. sweatdrop

Do you remember when Gaia went corporate? That was when Lanzer started to lose power. Almost everyone accused him of selling out. I wonder if right now Lanzer and the other original creators are regretting their choice to give up control. But now that you mention it, you're right! Gaia started going downhill as soon as Lanzer sold the rights to Gaia!

It's because corporations, generally speaking, care more about making money than keeping the dream alive. Unfortunatly, with most small business starters, costs and organization gets too overwhelming, so they have to sell out. sad

They seemed to be doing fine on donation items and stuff. It's not like they had to add EI's and stuff. Have you noticed that the number of active users on Gaia hasn't increased since 2007, and yet they claim to need more money than ever?

It's a pain, though. Poor Gaia.

Lmao @ that suing.
I found it funny when I saw the smoking ban... I mean, sure it's motivated by a positive cause but... history already shows bans (lol alcohol) never really works with such things and is always met with bad social effects.

Plus, one of Gaia's core values is its freedom of expression. 3nodding

As the guild's resident soldier, I have to agree with ED. Most of my brothers and sisters use tobacco of some form, whether they dip, chew, or smoke. While I am personally tabacco-free, I see no problem with what they are doing. Yes, I think it is unhealthy, but it has to be their choice to quit. Forcing the issue only makes the problem worse.

Absolutely. Telling people what to do all the time, especially when they're adults, usually just makes them resent you and gives them even more desire to do what you wish they'd stop doing.

Most people these days don't know this, but military food rations (the older version of MRE's) used to include a pack of cigarettes. Then again, it was also permissiblee to drink alcohol while on duty. Now, it is illegal to purchace or consume alcohol while in any military uniform.
The military is also encouraging soldiers to be tobacco-free. While they are not refusing them the products, they will provide various methods to aid in quitting.

For me, it's not even a matter of tobacco usage irl. It's a matter of freedom of expression. Most of the users that I know of are old enough to smoke irl. And even the ones who aren't old enough aren't going to get lung cancer from equipping virtual cigarettes on their avatars. In any case, I'm proud of Lanzer. I saw that some people were trying to do something nice for him. Some people are making him art and writing thank you letters. 3nodding

Aww come on, that's fricken hilarious! rofl As long as you didn't pay it, that is. xd
Didn't Gaia have some sort of thing where they were going to remove the smoking items due to them "promoting an unhealthy lifestyle"?
My cig was one of the first "expensive" items I bought back in my early gaia days. Gold was hard to get back then! I've been gone for a while so I really haven't seen anything too hilarious/ri-donkey-lous yet. I'll have to keep an eye out if I ever venture outside of my usual hangouts. Thanks for the laugh though. wink

The ban went out on a Friday, and it only lasted until Tuesday. Just about everyone lit up! blaugh I didn't have any smoking item, so I tried my darndest to pretend that I had smoking items. You should have been there! rofl
The first expensive thing that I quested for was the middle school uniform top and skirt. It was 2k all together and it took me a week or two of begging, bumping, and poll whoring to get them.
