"Painting. I mean, I'm not very good, but it's fun." She gave Rory an embarrassed smile. Somehow Rory liking poetry seemed very fitting, but she still looked a bit surprised to hear him say it. "Seriously? You write anything of your own?"

The boy blushed and looked down, shaggy dark hair hiding his face. "I hae a few tha' I wrote, but none tha' were too good. Th' carvin's I do are much better. You seen a few on th' outside o' th' vardo. The rabbits."

Lee laughed a bit, shrugging and looking up at Rory. "I'm sure your poetry's better than my paintings." Biting her lip, she hoped one day she'd get to read them, whether they were good or not. "Wait, you did those?" Her jaw dropped a bit, blinking a few times before agreeing, "Those are amazing! You like making carvings like that?" He seemed to be much more talented than she was, but instead of getting jealous as she would have if it were most other people, she just found him even more likable.

"They're not tha' good, but I like 'em. I donnae normally do carvin's on th' vardos like tha'. I wis just bored an' wanted t' pretty up me home," Rory said, shrugging one shoulder. "Usually, if'n I do a carvin', it's somethin' small."

Lee beamed up at him, and as he spoke she was visibly becoming more comfortable. Pulling her legs up beside her on the bed, she leaned on one arm and listened to him intently. She thought he'd make a pretty good -- and possibly quite successful -- tattoo artist, but he seemed to be just fine with training horses and figured she should keep her thoughts to herself. "I'd ask you to teach me how to do that, but I dun think I'd be too great at it."

"Ne'er know till you try," Rory answered. He stood up and went to his dresser, fetching a knife and some wood from one of the drawers. Bringing them back, he held them out to Lee. "It ain't so hard if'n you really wanna learn."

Blinking a few times, Lee took the knife and wood reluctantly, unsure what to do. "Eh. I'm not gonna cut myself am I?"

"I wonnae let you cut your pretty hands," the boy assured her, moving to sit with her to show her how to carve the wood into a little animal. The shape of a squirrel soon began to show through the wood.

Biting her lip, Lee nodded, letting Rory show her what to do. Once a squirrel started to appear in the wood, she gave Rory a small smile. Taking the wood and knife in her hands, she attempted to Mimic what Rory had done, carving a bit into the wood. Apparently she'd been pressing too hard, and a deep gash showed where the squirrel's eye would have been. Looking up apologetically, Lee felt bad for already ruining Rory's carving. "Oops."

"Nae, girl. It's alright. You can change a few features an' fix it." He took the wood from her, working at it with the knife expertly till the squirrel became a koi leaping from the water. "There. See? Not so bad now, eh?"

Lee blinked a few times as she watched him work. His level of skill was intimidating, but at the same time Lee couldn't keep her eyes off of his hands as they managed to salvage the carving, turning it into something even more impressive than before. "You always make animals?" Her voice was unintentionally low, almost a whisper, as if a loud noise would ruin his concentration.

"Not always," Rory answered, then gave a shy smile. "I just like animals. I'm not even sure what this fish is called." He held up the carving of the koi. "I saw 'un once when I wis a boy an' I always liked th' way it looked." He handed the carving to Lee. "I can do people, but th' didikai traditions kinda donnae exactly allow for pictures or anythin' along them lines. So, I content meself wi' animals."

Taking the carving from Rory, she let her finger trace over the koi, smiling a bit to herself before looking up at him. "Can I... keep this?" For studying purposes only, of course. She'd need something to look at when she was practicing her carving, right? "Why can't the didikai have pictures of themselves? My mother and father had a lot around the house." Art of her father and mother, and sometimes even Lee included in the family portraits, could be found in every room of the house. It was odd to think that it wasn't accepted as much here.

"You can keep it, aye," Rory said, making a mental note to himself to gift her with more carvings since she liked them. "As for not haein' images . . . well, it's hard t' explain exactly. Images o' a person keeps a little part o' them, like a bit o' their soul. If'n you hae images about, someone might be able t' use them against you. It prolly sounds silly t' you, right?"
