Elena flicked her tail again. "I guess," she said, unwillingly. She liked the forest, she liked being in those familiar, quiet places, and she wasn't at all sure that she agreed with Gemmae. "Not everyone I meet is as friendly as you are, though."

"Well, I should hope not," Gemmae replied dryly. "If they were, it'd be a fairly boring world!" It was nice to meet someone so...so shy. It gave Gemmae a chance to flex social muscles that had gone long unused. True, Elena didn't look like she was having such a good time, but Gemmae was certain she could change that, given time.
"Really, if everyone we met was nice and friendly, how would we ever learn anything?"

"This is true," Elena agreed philosophically. "The last soquili I met, well... he was very strange. He was looking for a gem, he said? I've been looking, in case I meet him again. I'm not sure I really liked him all that much, but it was... educational."
She paused, and added, "And before that was... Canace, her name is? And no one, really, before that. Not for a long time."

Gemmae was nodding, agreeing with Elena's agreement of her philosophy when the meaning of the white mare's words sank in. A strange, male Soquili...looking for a gem. It...couldn't be. Could it? She'd left him behind, close to two years ago. He couldn't be here. Not now. Not still looking...
The purple unicorn realized it had been a few minutes since Elena finished speaking. "Hmmmwhat? Oh, yes yes my daughter is Canace. Her brother is Calor and I haven't seen either of them in quite some time..." She trailed off again, thoughts inward and looking back into the past.

"I haven't met any Calor," Elena said, politely. "Does he look very much like his sister?"
If so, he must be very handsome.

Gemmae gratefully seized on a topic that she, as a proud mother, could elaborate on thoroughly.
"Oh yes, he is a sight to behold with a coat like the sunset, delicate gold wings perched on his head, long forelocks...my son is one of the most handsome stallions you could ever hope to meet!"
Much more handsome with his reddish coloring than certain...greenish...Soquili...

"Wings on his head? I've never seen anyone with wings on their head before," Elena said. "I definitely haven't met him. I'll have to remember, in case I do."

"Well it's no surprise he has wings on his head, his father had something like four pairs of wings, all told!" Gemmae exclaimed. "Didn't I mention? His father was an Angeni, so it's only to be expected that he have wings of some kind!"

"Oh!' Elena was suitably impressed. "That's where Canace gets her wings, too, then. Neat."
She was feeling slightly plain in comparison to this unicorn, and the part-angeni she was being told about, and even that lizardy stallion she'd met. Normally she didn't think much about what she looked like. It was disconcerting.

"Yes, exactly! And let me tell you, she used to tease Calor all the time because she could fly and he couldn't." Gemmae smiled fondly at the memories.
"I must say though, they were lucky enough to get their looks from genetics. Now you, you have taste. And style! Both of my kids could learn a thing or two from you!"

Elena was slightly taken aback. Her? Style? She didn't think along those lines very much. She had thought Canace was prettier than her. She was just... white. And while there was nothing wrong with white, it couldn't compete with very long manes or horns or wings (either on heads or the regular kind) or intricate patterns in a deep purple coat or anything. A few ribbons and tack didn't seem to make that much difference.
"Thank you," she said, softly, and laughed self-consciously.

"You're welcome," Gemmae replied cheerfully. She hadn't missed the subtle signs indicating that Elena, while an adult, had less than full confidence in herself.
It reminded her of when Calor had gone through that phase himself. He might have put on a friendly face, but he'd had serious doubts due to his winglessness. She'd helped him through that...there was no reason she couldn't help Elena as well.
Though she'd have to be more subtle. Elena wasn't a child of hers after all.

Elena shook her head, embarrassed, and further embarrassed by the fact that she was, because it wasn't an emotion that came to her often when she was alone.
"What brings you into the forest?" she asked.

"Oh, nothing much," she replied airily. "A beautiful day, a chance to walk around really, I'm just out enjoying the world today."
Except for the bit of news Elena had brought. That certainly had a way of spoiling her beautiful day. Not that she'd tell the white mare that.
"And what of yourself? Any particular reason for wandering around the forest on your part?"

Elena was quiet a moment. "No particular reason," she said at last. "I like to be alone, I like the forest, I like it. It's... familiar. It's quiet. I know what it is and what to expect."
All that was true enough.
