divineseraph I have a problem with the term "freethinker" meaning "atheist"- It seems too emotionally attached, and implies that anyone else is either incapable or unwilling to take part in "free thought" or "deep thought", which is quite simply unfair. Totes, I've noticed recently that people tend to stereotype any one who has anything to do with religion as Crazy or Obsessed. For example, Last week I was doing a project for my religious studies class which involved taking a survey in my local town centre. Now, I'm not religious at all so I really wasn't expecting any hostility. I expected to get turned down by a lot of people sure, But I wasn't expecting some Jumped up little 14 year olds trying to 'Convert me'. Obviously, as soon as They insinuated I was of faith, I told them that, well, I wasn't. But before I got the chance to specify this I was called a few choice names, 'psycho' being one of them, along with Nutter and Bible basher. However, as soon as I told these little brats That, I was not in fact, A Christian Or any other Religious follower a certain air of camaraderie came across. I've even noticed this problem amongst my friends and family. As most of my friends and family are atheist or Laid back believers, A lot of people I know Have no problem with bashing other religions.
I do.
It just seems inconsiderate and rude That we would complain about Religious people Persecuting and Ridiculing us, when we do it all the time behind their backs.

I'm afraid to say I do not live in the U.S, Please refrain from assuming things about me in the future.
Next, I know personally that in the Atheist community We do tend to persecute those of other religions. I hardly mean Chased out of town by an angry mob Persecution but I have seen a certain mistreatment of others by the atheists I am in contact with. Perhaps this is just because I hang out with the wrong type of person But the thing is, It tends to be passed off with such an air of nonchalance that I have to believe otherwise.
I mean, even I have some very narrow-minded Ideas when it comes to religion. I tend to fall into the assumption that people who believe in god/gods Are irrational, Or reject science, When In actual fact That is often very far from the truth.

Love; Birdie I don't live in the US either, but even in any other country, atheists are not in a position to persecute religious people, because they are usually the minority. To persecute someone you need to be in a position of power. If you don't have that, the only thing you're left with is ridicule. I honestly don't know of any case of religious people being persecuted by atheists (aside from communist countries in the 20th century, but I would classify those countries as having a kind of "state religion" anyway). Now, I don't think religious people in general are stupid. I think religiousness is mostly a consequence of upbringing. I am sometimes a bit of an a*****e when it comes to topics like creationism and such, but I think that's my right razz

I am sometimes a bit of an a*****e when it comes to topics like creationism and such, but I think that's my right razz I mostly agree with Artto. I live in the US in a city that had more church per square mile than on the bible belt. I live in Colorado Springs, you might of heard of it because of the whole scandal with Ted Haggard. I was personally baned from his church when I was younger, but thats besides the point. The thing is I am an atheist raise in a family of less than devout Catholics. When I was in high school I tried to start a club for atheists/agnostics for a school that was seventy five percent Evangelical, and with three Jewish kids. The school would not grant permission,a dn the district refused legal action. I was a super understanding kid. But now that I'm older I've realized close to all my assumptions about religion is true. And alas that get to my point; why do you feel guilty about thinking religion is irrational? If you didn't than you would just be religious.
