[ So I figure he hardly sleeps. Which makes sense, because he's so involved in solving the kira case. ] I've always thought that too, seeing how determined he is on cases more than most the Kira case up until his death. That and it just makes him the oddball that he is. Flinks, is it alright if I use the collage idea of L's eyes to make my own collage? I'm thinking I can collect more and put it all together in the form of an L for an icon or otherwise.

The Missing Puzzle Piece Inane Whimsies Wuu I like to think that he wears mascara!... xp but it probably is just lack of sleep. I think you mean eyeliner... and maybe some black eyeshadow to touch it up... I've made my eyes look like L's before for fun, hehe.
But yeah. Most likely lack of sleep... I think Eru is emo! sweatdrop I'm sorry if this is a totally outrageous theory, but I am just suggesting. Aahah! L is emo! That totally explains it~!
It would be funny to have a emo L parody type thingier, and Mello and Misa could be goth kids and uh... I dunno about Near and Light... humm... nerds? Hah. Wait no.... Light could be a pimp >.>

Inane Whimsies I think the answer is... L is just a freak who isn't suppose to be as hot as we all (well most of us) think he is <3 So really, what she planned for (making L unattractive) was a complete failure. Genius, Obata, pure Genius.

I hate to sound like a Naruto geek, but Gaara has the same blackened eye-syndrome-thing-artist-draw-dealie: and that was explicitly explained as lack of sleep. Probably just a Japanese thing to show insomnia, though I've seen more of the purple and little scribbles, I think.
