i know with my guy once i got him home after just a few days he started to change. i had seen his at the store for a while though and he always stayed the same, the petsmart i got him from takes decent care of their bettas and changes the cup water everyday and i only change his water every week

Maybe the store tank was brighter, and your tank is a bit darker?
Do you add anything to the water the store might not be adding?
Or maybe it's due to a different diet? I know some fish react faster to color enhancers then others, though I'm not sure that it will happen after a few days.

in betta there actually IS a color changing gene
mostly found in marbel betta
even though betta change color anyway as they grow the color changing gene can cause waaaaay different changes

Heh, now I really want to keep bettas again.
Wait is that gene in anyway related to the color changes in goldfish?
I used to have a very nice red and white Sarassa comet/comon hybrid, but over the years it started turning almost pure white.
It always puzzled me.
