With a nervous laugh, Chath nodded and took the materials into his hand. Without much hesitation, he went and set them into the center of the circle in a pile as he was told. When that was all done, he dusted his hands and looked towards Julien.
"Maybe. But I think he still thinks I'm a baby. I'm not."
Of course, a part of that might be because of his accelerate growth rate. Most humans his age would indeed be babies. Over all it was odd for his guardian to deal with.
"I don't suppose you've ever had to deal with that did you?"

Julien chuckled at that, handing Chath larger sticks as he did. "Actually, yes," he agreed. "But Mir already knew that I wasn't like humans, so we got used to it together, she and I. Set these on top of the others, and spread them around a bit, so that you can see the smaller ones through," he directed, sitting down on the sand and folding his arms over his knees.
"I think it's probably better if you find ways to show your guardian that you're not a baby without scaring him, don't you?" he added gently. "There are lots of ways to show you can handle yourself, after all."

As he listened, Chath did as he was told, not wanting to mess anything up for the soon to come demonstration. Looking back at Julien, he frowned before standing up straighter.
"Like how? If I try to do anything around him, he stops me! Well except for when I go to play with video games or watch tv or something like that," he said while recalling some memories, "Like the other day! I tried to make some mac n' cheese. Not that easy mac stuff. When he saw me doing it he stopped me and went to make it himself!"
There was a pause.
"Though.. I guess I did kinda spill some stuff here and there... but I was gonna clean it up!"

A few more sticks in place, and the Jules reached for the longest of them, holding it out to Chath. "Hold one end, and use the lighter to light the other," he said, his voice a touch distant as he considered Chath's question.
"Maybe the best place to start is with small things. If you can show how mature you are with things that he expects you to do, then he'll start expanding your limits. Keep your room clean, and maybe help out some with things that he needs help with." He paused, then added, "If you like to cook, rather than trying to do things all on your own, ask him if he'd like to help you with it. He'll feel better about things, and you can show him how well you can handle yourself."

Taking the stick, the boy looked it over briefly before working to get the lighter going again. It took several tries just like before to get the flame going. Before holding the lighter up to the other end of the stick, he considered the words of advice that had been given.
"Hm... not a bad idea. But that'll take awhile won't it?"
It sounded good, but he felt a bit impatient in terms of how long it would take for Michael to acknowledge that he could handle himself.
"How long did it take for your guardian to see it?" he said just as he began to light up the end of the stick, holding the flame there for a few moments before the tip finally caught the fire.

Julien smiled quietly. "There are times when I think Mir still sees the little boy she knew any time she looks at me. But she's been entrusted with ensuring my safety and guiding me," he added, watching Chath work at the stick patiently. "It's much the same with yours, I think." And then, in a voice that suggested he was betraying a great confidence, he softly added, "Part of growing up is learning to be patient with the changes you want to happen."
Smile firmly in place as Chath finally got the stick lit, he nodded to the pile. "Okay, take that and slip it between the larger pieces, so that you can light the small twigs on fire. The larger sticks will feed the fire that grows from the twigs."

"Alright. I guess it couldn't hurt to try anyway," he said with a smile, "I'll start showing him once I get back home later."
Focusing on the flaming stick now, he pocketed the lighter and listened to the instructions. He looked at the pile, then went ahead and stuck the flaming end between the larger pieces as he was told. And just as Julien said, the flames began to grow from within the pile as the smaller twigs caught it first.
As he watched, he seemed to be somewhat mesmerized by the dancing flames.
"I never really realized it from tv or anything... but fire is really pretty."

Julien smiled at Chath, considering the boy for a moment before nodding his head. "Fire is very beautiful," he said softly, eyes distant for a moment. "But it can hurt very badly if you reach out to touch it. Never try to touch fire. Only look." He leaned back a little, certain within himself that if Chath did ignore his warning, he could do something about it. All that practice had, at the very least, made him more confident in his abilities.

Chath took Julien's warning and nodded, though his eyes were fixed onto the flames that danced on the pile. This was the largest fire he had seen so far; with all other flames being either from the stove or from the lighter. Neither of those were all too spectacular either, though the blue color from the stove flames were neat.
"I'll have to keep that in mind. But... what do we do with the fire now?"

"Well, a fire like this is still too small to do very much with, but I do want to show you a safe way to put it out, so that you know how to make sure the fire's dead. If you leave a fire without putting it out, you chance it going out of control and hurting someone," Julien said, smiling quietly. Really, Chath was a very good listener, he was discovering.

What Julien said made sense when he thought about it. And it made him wonder why he hadn't really considered a few of these things before hand. Well better that he learn these things now than when he ends up losing control of things.
"That sounds good! But... won't some water just be enough?" he replied while blinking, "Where did you learn all of this anyway?"

"I like to cook," Julien said, smiling. "And some food is just... best if cooked outside, over a wood fire like this one. Only... one that's better built, with proper fuel for it. So when my guardian found out that I wanted to try it, she taught me what I needed to know to keep us all safe." He paused, then leaned back on his hands, stretching a little.
"And actually, sand and dirt is better than water. With fire, water makes steam and can boil and splash, both of which can hurt you. But dirt and sand, instead, cut the fire off from the air it needs, without splashing around or making steam. So the best thing to do is smother the fire with dirt or sand, if you've got it handy. If you don't, water will definitely work. But you want to be careful pouring it on."

What Julien referred to must have been like those grills he sometimes saw in neighboring areas. The food from those always smelled really nice. It was too bad that Michael didn't have room for one of those.
"I'll be sure to keep that in mind."
Well that explained why Julien had picked this spot. The dirt was pretty loose so it shouldn't be too hard to use that to smother the flames. To some extent he didn't really want to have to put out the fire, but he supposed it had to be done. So kneeling down, he set his torch down and started to scoop some of the sandy dirt onto the tip to put it out.
"Oh... and thanks for all the information Julien. It's really handy."

Julien smiled at that, letting Chath handle it on his own. Even so, he kept a sharp eye out in case the boy hurt himself in the process. "I like making new friends, and keeping them safe," he said simply. "It's... what I do..." As he spoke the last words, his voice trailed off, eyes growing distant as he considered what he'd just said silently. There was meaning there - more than he'd meant to speak.

The stick's end had been put out completely, so that left the main fire. Scooping up more dirt, he held it over the flames and dropped the load quickly. The fire might not have been all that large but it was still rather hot he found. Just as he was about to scoop up some more dirt to try and take a slightly different approach, he glanced at Julien.
There seemed to be something on his mind, from the way he spoke and the way he looked. Tilting his head, Chath turned more towards the older boy.
"You alright there?"
