Cab was too focused on Penners at the moment to respond to Alessa. "Listen to me, please! Not as a fighter, but as a friend. I don't know what was done to you, but a battle should simply be a test of skill. It is nothing to go into a rage about!"
Please... The word came softly to Penners' ears. No one said please. They demanded. But it made her hesitate. Made her pause. She turned to look back at Cab and her face calmed some, but she was afraid! Cab! Cab was doing this! Cab was making her fight!
"They didn't get the chance to," she said, turning back to her opponent and drawing again on her battle anger. "And neither will you!" Another Thunderbolt rained down from above, filled with Penners rage and frustration.

Despite the other Thunderbolt and her slightly fried feathers, this amused Beth greatly. Once again, she poured hot air from her beak right on the Rattata. “You are aware you are not a Pikachu, are you?” she asked, mocking her further. “You should give up right now. Anger is bad for your health. And even if I lose this fight, my trainer will always bring me back to the Pokécenter and heal me. I’ll always be back in full shape. Your human might be nice enough to do that to you, and then drag you to another fight.”
The bird shook her head. “Another fight, in another equally uncomfortable field.”
Man, and she thought Beth was a special case. Alessa started sweating visibly, the mental pressure growing even though she couldn’t even order her Pokémon around. “Huh, yeah. Heat Wave. That was… the good strategy. Keep going.”
She didn’t have the heart to say it clearly, she only mumbled that encouragement.
Pokémons usually don’t fight that hard on their own, unless in the wild when they have to defend their lives, that is at least one thing she was certain of, thanks to her job.
Should she ask if everything was okay? No, dear, that girl was begging her own Rattata to calm down while she managed to make rodents look psychotic, they are not okay.

"Perhaps I'm related to one," she said, he heart no longer in the bantering. "The fight is all!" she growled. "And I shall win." Beth's words cut deeply. Cab, why? She could not hear Cab's pleading.
Penners' pokéball was in Cab's hand, but she must talk sense into her before calling her back! She couldn't thrust her into the pokéball without knowing Penners forgave her. That she understood. "You don't have to fight, Penners. I'll not force you." She felt so frustrated though, whatever was going on simply kept Penners going. She feared never holding sweet Penners again, what if she turned feral?
"You simply fear the pain!" Penners shouted. The Thunderbolt got a reaction, it made the Murkrow nervous, as well she should be! And so she called it again.

It was time Alessa made an intervention. Begging and pleading wasn’t going to work, she could see that. With an unsuspected mental strength, she decided to change her strategy and raise a clenched fist. “You will stop that this instant, young bird! You want to make yourself useful? Very well, I tell you how you can fix that!” She pointed at Penners with determination. “Force her to calm down. Not with brute force! Paralyze her instead, and she will have to listen to her owner!”
Once again, the thunderbolt hurt her weak point, and her altitude lowered. It got harder to fly so gracefully, and if it weren't for the hot air, she would probably have landed already. But she kept her head up. For once, she obeyed to Alessa. Not because she accepted her authority, but because she fully appreciated the irony of holding the Rattata’s tail within her talons and using it as a conductor to her Thunder Wave.

Cab gasped as the Murkrow gripped Penners' tail. Why was she even doing this, she was so on edge during battle. It looked like something went wrong with the attack, electricity wrapped them both, but seemed to fizzle out prematurely.
"You are weak, bird," Penners said, turning and surveying her opponent. "And you will fail."
Cab tried the praise route once more. If she'd been so abused, it was likely no one ever said anything nice to her. "Penners, you're doing so good. You came up with a strategy all your own and are winning," She felt bad that the other pokémon had to suffer Penners' madness. She didn't really grasp that there were times Beth had been goading Penners.
"I'm so proud of you Penners, no matter what. I'll always be proud of you." Was she even listening? "I'm sorry for what happened to you, but we can get through it. We can get through anything together."
But Penners was listening. She turned away from Beth and looked at Cab, feeling so conflicted. Isn't this what you want? This is what brought me here for? She turned her back on Beth and took a few tentative steps toward Cab.
Cab felt a rush of relief. "It's alright, Penners. You don't have to do anything you don't want to."
Penners' paws twitched with barely-contained anger. She'd been so happy to leave the rental place and be with Cab. So pleased to feel warmth and comfort from another. Could it really be true? Cab wasn't lying?
"You can come away when ever you want, or we can finish this. Together. As one." Cab was breathing heavily. What if Penners wouldn't forgive her?
Penners ran the distance along the pillars of rock and jumped into Cab's waiting arms. She shook, letting loose her frustration and fear, anger and sadness. Her tiny claws gripped Cab's skin hard.
But Cab didn't care. She did flinch when a claw broke skin, but it didn't matter. Penners forgave her. She waited until the little Rattata stopped shivering and then held her to her face. "So it's up to you, do you want to finish?"
In response, Penners jumped down and dashed back to Beth and stood at the ready. She'd make no move that Cab didn't ask of her, because that's all she ever did. Ask.
((I figure all that will take an entire turn, being a long emotional scene and all.))

This beginning of a resolution moved Alessa. A faint smile appeared on her face as she witnessed the event going on at the other side of the field. The woman has always had a soft spot for these happy endings. “Oh thank god, everything’s gonna be fine now.”
She rubbed her eye under her glasses, but didn’t want to show she was crying of joy. She blamed the weather instead. “It’s so hot out there. Let’s finish it, and then, we can go have something fresh to drink.”
Enthusiastically, she pointed again at Penners, but this time, with less authority and more hope. “Let’s try again. Thunder Wave, Beth!”
“Stop being a crybaby”, she muttered to her own trainer before approaching the rodent again. The grumpy Murkrow hated it when love and friendship saved the day without a warning. However, the opponent was no longer in the right state of mind to be hurt properly with words. Why bother? “I hope you’re happy, now. This time, I’m focused, I won’t miss you” she threatened Penners while rolling her eyes. The bird made another attempt to catch the Rattata’s curly tail and shock her; maybe she would have less trouble now that the mammal hadn’t used an electric attack during her last turn. Electricity is so unpredictable…

Cab wiped tears from her face and took a calming breath. Another wave of electricity washed over Penners from the Murkrow, but it again seemed to lack any power. She took stock of how the battle had been going, Penners had done well with the electric attacks, and had even known ice was useful against flying-types, but with the fire around it lowered its effectiveness.
"You had it right from the begining, Penners. Use Thunderbolt."
Penners had nothing to say to the Murkrow. She simply waited for the Thunder Wave to stiffen her limbs, but it didn't happen. When she heard Cab, she called over her shoulder, "You got it!" although that wasn't what Cab would hear.
Another bolt formed from high in the air and shot down toward the two combatants.

As with the previous times, the thunder hit the Dark type right in her back and she took the whole impact. Her wings felt limp, and she fell right beside Penners. Her legs hurt, and she wanted to open her beak to breathe a heat wave… but she was out of breath, and she instead staggered a couple feet away until she tripped for good. A couple sparks fizzled from her talons, too weak to have paralyzed but a fly.
Beth complained in a whisper: “That’s what I get for trying to use electricity.”
She felt very tired, and didn’t say a thing when the ray of the pokéball hit her and she vanished.
Alessa walked forward. “Wow. That was… an intense fight! Short, but packed with emotions!” she said, very enthusiastic and apparently not minding her defeat at all. “That was awesome! I couldn’t dream of something more special for my first real battle!”
In hindsight, many things went wrong, however, the adrenaline rush wasn’t something she got very often, and she enjoyed it while it lasted. “It was an honour fighting with you! I’m so, so glad you were able to bond with your Pokémon. Very strong Rattata, very smart. They are less brave than that in the wild, usually. If I’m not wrong, she’s some kind of shiny as well, is she?” She raised her hand, apparently in an attempt to shake her hands with Cab. She was showing off so much of the knowledge accumulated in her job she looked ridiculous.
If she could have understood any word the fighters had said, she would have freaked out, of course, but being a human, the interpretation was completely left to her imagination.

Cab waited for Penners to return. She was glad to have gained some control over the ending, but was worried. Would Penners go off like that for every battle? Could she trust her new companion? She didn't get long to ponder these thoughts before her opponent arrived beside her.
"Oh! Yes, yes it was. Thank you," she said. "You too, thank you for the battle." She felt a bit overwhelmed, normally such chatter wouldn't bother her, but her own emotions were so frazzled that it was too much. Penners came ambling up to the pair of them and Cab leaned down to offer her a hand. Soon, Penners was on Cab's shoulder once more looking every bit the calm and quiet Rattata Cab was used to. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was still wrong.
"Um, yes. Quite a bit of luck, actually. I got her initially as a Rental. And well, they all look the same when they're in the pokéballs." She gave a small laugh, but her heart wasn't in it.
"We really must be off, though," she said, shaking the other woman's hand. Her first impression of the chatty woman made her worry that perhaps she'd be a difficult one to get away from. She hoped that wouldn't be the case. "Thank you, so much. I hope your Murkrow gets to feeling fine quickly."
